  1. I agree with Trader, even the best of us make mistakes from time to time. Jig or no jig, you can still goof up if your in a hurry.
  2. Thanks for the input guys. I did realize the second was for the 09-10 VMax, according to Starcycle anyways. My plan was to build a set myself, well with a good buddy's help at least. He's a pro welder and subs at the Tech College in Eau Claire and teaches his trade. I seen a set of custom headers he did for his 289 in a Ford Ranger 4x4 short-box. I'll just have to load up my parts bike and use it as a template. I'll keep ya posted if I actually make any progress. Bill
  3. So, I've been thinking about the header style collector from MarksPipes that replaces our stock collector. While I was searching for a picture of them quite some time ago, I also ran across another style header that due to the firing order (1-3-2-4), makes more sense to me. Anybody have any input or see anything that may help put things into perspective? Pros and/or cons to either type? The first pic is from MarksPipes, the second is the one that seems like it would make more sense to me. How is the 2nd gen exhaust set up? Aren't 3&4 and 1&2 connected? Thanks, Bill
  4. I replaced all my diodes a couple years back. You can do it, especially with all these experts to help ya out.
  5. Thanks, the lenses might fit, but its the housing that's broken. I may just have to try using my Plastex if I can't find anything. Either that or custom build some new lights somehow.
  6. Would anybody happen to have one of the light that goes in the chin cowling for 83-85? I got a really nice chrome cowling from a good pal, but one of the lights is broken.
  7. Well I got a set of carbs from Orlin last weekend so I can rebuild them and not lose out on any riding. My bike has still been running fairly good for the most part. Every now and then it will run on 3 cylinders. Then it will kick back in a while later. My mileage has gotten progressively worse little by little over the past few years. Average is about 36-37 mpg now. Was up in the low 40's. O a lazy afternoon on windy back roads, It was even better. Last time I checked the diaphragms were still okay. On last weekends ride with Ken and Orlin, I could feel the engine surge if I tried to stay at about 25 mph in second or 35 mph in third gear. It just feels like something isn't quite right in the carbs and it would try to clear up and then the engine would surge like I just gave it a bit more throttle. If I'm cruising the back roads, sometimes it feels like I'm heading into a high wind off and on. It just doesn't feels like the fuel isn't flowing as freely as it should. Anything sound familiar? Bill
  8. Thanks Snaggletooth, I found some here if needed http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/yamaha/Y-1FK-14985-00-00.html
  9. Well, between eBay, Sirius Consolidates Inc., and boast.net, I found everything listed above, except for floats, for a total of $310.05. I hope my floats are in good shape. Now its hurry up and wait. I attached some screenshots with part numbers, prices, and where I found them if it help anybody else later down the road. Thanks for ALL your input Guys!
  10. Now that the kind of service I've come to expect here on VR.ORG. Thanks guys! I do a bit more research when I get home from work here.
  11. I've been looking through the posts all afternoon looking for what is needed for a complete carb rebuild on an MKI. So fsr it looks like there is no real complete rebuild kit specifically for the MKI. Diaphrams from SCI look like the best bet for those. Some have said the VMax rebuild kits share some of the same parts needed. Anybody have a list of what is needed to do a good rebuild of the MKI carbs? Gaskets, o-rings, floats, diaphragms, needle valves, etc.? I just don't want to go ordering things that may not fit and waste money. Trying to take some of the guess work out of the picture. Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Bill
  12. I'll be there, or be squared! Need me to bring anything?
  13. Thanks for your input guys, its much appreciated. Bill
  14. Hi guys, My Dad is building a VW trike with about a late 70's Goldwing triple tree. I took it for a spin and it is full of issues that need to be addressed. The one that bothered me the most was the way the front wobbled. If I took both hands off the bars even for a moment, its a real tank slapper and seems like an accident waiting to happen. Where do you guys think I should start to try eliminating the issue? More rake? Less rake? Different tire size? I've never ridden a trike before, is this a common problem? Another problem is his brakes. It still has the stock drums and he setup a stock master cylinder in the floorboards. When I hit the pedal, it just doesn't do much to slow the thing down. What should I look for? Are there any aftermarket setups that would be a better choice? The other problem is the shift linkage. I really have to fight to change gears. How do you guys set up yours? Aren't there automatics out there somewhere? I've heard of the Autostick setups, at least that's what I think I've heard them called anyway, but that would still require manual shifting. How the heck is the shift linkage set up for those trikes made out of bikes with VW rearends? This thing looks like it should be on a Road Warrior movie, but at least I can try to help make it safer for him to ride. I know I have pics somewhere. Thanks, Bill
  15. Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the older woman, that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment. The woman apologized and explained, "We didn't have this green thing back in my earlier days." The young clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment f or future generations." She was right -- our generation didn't have the green thing in its day. Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were truely recycled. But we didn't have the green thing back in our day. Grocery stores bagged our groceries in brown paper bags, that we reused for numerous things, most memorable besides household garbage bags, was the use of brown paper bags as book covers for our schoolbooks. This was to ensure that public property, (the books provided for our use by the school) was not defaced by our scribblings. Then we were able to personalize our books on the brown paper bags. But too bad we didn't do the green thing back then. We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day. Back then, we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throwaway kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy-gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right; we didn't have the green thing back in our day. Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana. In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right; we didn't have the green thing back then. We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the green thing back then. Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 23,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest burger joint. But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then? Please forward this on to another selfish old person who needs a lesson in conservation from a smartass young person.
