  1. You have Trip 1 and Trip 2 ..than what heck Trip F is used for
  2. Last wednesday we were getting ready to leave for Gatlinburg with 27 other folks for a weekend of riding and fun, naturally I had to work late so was already running late. At about 10 pm I went out to hook up the trailer and check all the lights and stuff and the bike just shut down on me. I determined that the fuel pump was not working so I called a buddy of mine who rides a wing trike but also has a yamaha two wheeler for solo riding. Told him that I would have to wait until the dealer opened the next day to get a pump and that I would just meet them up there later in the day. The first thing he said was to just come get his pump and make the trip and then get a replacement later! So at about 11 pm I was taking parts off of someone elses bike so that my trip wouldn't be ruined! Made the swap and the trip went great. I don't think many folks would have offered to let someone take parts off their bike in that situation so my hat is off to Roger McClure aka: Mama Chicken from Somerville Al.
  3. Just a news article in our local newspaper that I thought others may like to know about. The web site is located at: http://www.wegotyour6.southernwebsolution.net The full article can be seen at: http://www.heraldnet.com/article/20100503/NEWS01/705039903#Marysville.mans.9000-mile.fundraising.ride.is.for.the.troops MARYSVILLE — Frank McAtee is going to sleep on the ground for three weeks, without so much as a camping pad under his sleeping bag. He'll spend more than $1,000 on gas. He's asking his metallic purple 1987 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide — which already has seen 108,000 miles — to carry him around the perimeter of the nation, to roll another 9,000 miles under her aging wheels. McAtee doesn't have to do any of this, but he's doing it anyway. He's doing it for the troops. Not just for those engaged in war, but for all the men and women in uniform. “Someone should do something to show 'em the little guy in America still has got their backs,” he said. “It doesn't matter what the politics are.” He leaves today. McAtee, 50, served in the Marine Corps from 1977 to 1982. The idea for his trip came to him after the shootings in Fort Hood, Texas, last November that left 13 people dead and 30 wounded, he said. McAtee will collect donations along the way for the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society and the USO, two worldwide organizations that provide financial assistance and other help to military personnel and their families. He's already personally collected about $500, he said. He's selling pins that say, “We've Got Your 6” and “9,000 miles across America,” for $5 each. The “6” is military lingo for the area behind one's back. I signed up at his website and will be donating as well. silverdeer
  4. We just made it home..I kept in touch with Larry and guys I am glad they are OK..He was only 15 miles from the house when it happened..So glad they are OK and NO the Dog was not on board! Also..I will let others let ya know about the trip but all I can say is WOW!!! The Amarillo Tx bunch made there first meet..I think they were not expecting all of what went on...For those that missed it..well it was a success!Pictures will follow by the other members but we saw the most magnificent array of flowers that can be imagined..Imagine a Sea of Purple..literally 100s of acres solid purple with cactus rising from it all with dashes of yellow flowers mixed in...Mind boggling. Hope everyone makes it home OK..We are home! http://www.facebook.com/#!/album.php?aid=2045567&id=1073186456 I think this link will give a few more pictures from a good friend of mine
  5. So I rode my bike to work yesterday... A little chilly in the morning, but gorgeous on the way home... Even took the long way home. (20 mile detour.) Right before I got home, I stopped to top off the tank, and reset the trip meter (as I always do) then it happened... I turned the key back on, and switched back from trip to Odometer and WTF?!?!?! MY MILEAGE IS RESET TO ZERO! Now, my bike is clean, but not THAT clean! I checked to make sure it wasn't some fluke, and that I wasn't reading the trip meter, when I got home, I reset the trip again, and sure enough I have 3 miles on my bike now. Great. I already have a company that will fix it for $55 if I ship it to them with a bunch of paperwork, and that's what I had to do the last time, (yeah it has happened before) but I want to make sure it doesn't happen again. As a computer tech, my only thoughts are that somehow something is grounding out, or had voltage sent to it in a bad way that might have reset some type of EEPROM that holds the mileage. I hate to replace the ENTIRE wiring harness, but I guess I don't have much of a choice, unless it's something in the gauge cluster? Any thoughts? Maybe I should just buy another cluster instead? I don't want to just let it keep resetting, I'm not fond of felony fraud.
  6. I planning a trip to leave ATL 4/12, I'll head up to Charlotte for lunch and stop in Roanoke, Va for the night. 4/13 will take me to Scranton, Pa for lunch, then to my Brother's house in Penn Yan, NY by dinner. Anybody in Roanoke and Scranton that can give me the good food low down, Like a regional favorite at the local diner? Any regional info would be great. Thanks
  7. Each year my best friend and I take a trip to somewhere on our bikes. This year we are headed to Washington. We leave in less than three weeks!! WOW I can't wait!! We live in Modesto, CA. Gonna head out over the Altamont Pass, take 680 to 24 to 80 to 101 and on up. Stopping the first night in Fort Bragg on the Pacific Coast Highway. Day two will see us up Hwy 1 to Cresent City where we will crash for night two. Then up into Oregon to see my little sister in Toledo, OR for night three. Day four will get us to Portland, OR where we will stay the night but not before we explore the southern part of Washington. Day six gets us back down to Eugene, OR. Easy day, nice hotel and probably a movie at the theater right across the street. Day seven gets us around Crater Lake and down to Mount Shasta, CA for the night. Day eight to Paradise, CA and back home on day nine.
  8. Got a new battery about a year or year and a half ago. Everything seemed fine and then last year, towards the end of the season, I had the flat on the way to Denver. Took it down to the dealer there to have a new tire put on and ,when I went to get it, the battery barely turned the bike over reset the trip meter when it cranks slow. Since then I've experienced slow cranking a couple times. I took the battery to the Interstate place and had it tested and they said "the batter tests fine". However, before taking it in I had it on the trickle charger and, since I'd taken it out of the bike I had it in the warm building before taking it over. I kept it on the trickle charger all winter. First time I tried to start it about 4 weeks ago it cranked slow and reset the trip meter. Put it back on the charger and 2 weeks ago it started well, no trip meter reset. Road about 60 miles. Left it off the charger just to see what would happen. Fast forward to today. Went to ride this morning and started the bike before putting anything on. Bike cranked slow. Nothing on the speedo, fuel, trip meter. I've blown the fuse for that before so I'm thinking it's the fuse but would the battery and slow cranking blow that fuse? I'm still thinking I got a dud battery and that, when cold, it doesn't act like it does when warm. I know, in another post someone mentioned something about a power connection behind the battery box so I'm going to check that out as well.
  9. so, i'm sure alot of you guys have your wives or significant others so.. i have a .. concern with my wife riding with me. I had a tank slap today, combined with high wind.. quick thinking and a strong guardian angel were the only factors that kept me from becoming a hood ornimate on a volvo tractor trailer. my wife decided not to go on the trip with me, and i'm extreemly thankful, because if she had been on the bike, i don't know if we would have made it out. so my delimma is having my wife ride with me. i don't know if i could ever come to terms with her being hurt because of an accident when i got her into this to begin with. she's not an avid rider, but she has atgatt and likes to take a trip now and then. We've talked about riding alot more as a pair, the reason i got this venture, infact. I'm just not sure about it. any of you go thought this? any advice?
  10. Looking for route options from Niagara Falls Canada to Pigeon Forge. The last time we toured down (for the Honda Hoot a few years back) we followed 219 (from just outside Buffalo) pretty much all the way. Round trip we are looking at about 7 days (to bad the Gap is outa commission, got my fingers crossed it will be clear by the second week in June..I hope). We are more interested in the sight seeing/twisty kinda routes than burning up the interstates(we tend to save that for the trip home). Any suggestions would be most welcome.
  11. The weather being so nice...and me having to go back to work today to be ready for work at 6AM in the morning. I decided to ride Black Betty to work. I do this occasionally but have to watch the weather closely since I have to stay at work for 7 days and return the 8th day. So this morning I am head to Youngsville LA (suburb of Lafayette LA) for a week of work. I usually when in the cage drive back Tuesday night and get home around midnight, but since I am riding Betty...I will spend one more night and come back the following day so I will not have to travel at night through some of the heaviest deer population in the South East. The weather for the return trip April 7th looks promising so far. So I am hoping it will be nice for the return trip. Got her all loaded up and pulling out in a few minutes. I plan on talking the long way to get in as much riding as I can. Get out of my way...here I come cages.
  12. Well I ought to know better, but I took the weatherman at his word. The weather here was supposed to be partly cloudy, 20% chance of afternoon spot showers and temperature near 60. Well we took off this morning for a ride to a "Blessing of the Bikes" event in Philadelphia, MS (184 mile round trip). Temp was 55 when we left and sun was trying to break through. Well the farther we rode, the cloudier it got and the cooler it got and the wind was gusting enough to blow us around on the road. When we got to Philadelphia the temp on one business sign was 49F. Oh well we made it and had a good time. Got a cold hot dog, a bag of chips and a drink, for lunch. Met some really nice folks and even though we had the only RSV there we did see two RSTDs. Trip back was even cooler as we were riding back INTO the gusty wind. All in all though, a good day, even though for one un-named RSMV rider it was "too cold" to come out!!! :stickpoke::rasberry:
  13. "Everything is bigger in Texas" Including the darn stones they use to chip seal the roads. Wow, it's like driving on marbles. I'd forgotten about that since my last trip.

  15. Somewhere around the end of last summer, someone posted a link to a story a young rider wrote and documented with LOTS of pictures of a trip he took on his bike from down south all the way across the country on his old small crummy bike. (It was small, like an old 500) for the life of me I can't find it or a link to it now. All I can remember were the pictures of his old bike with the fenders tied on with wire, the engine oil running out everywhere, and the story he told of sleeping on the ground next to it. Anyone remember it?
  16. I just picked up a 1987 venture royal I live in Spokane my best friend lives in San Diego and wants to take me on a trip to Canada I didnt have a bike that would make the trip. so I went shoping on line I found my venture royal but it was In San Diego my friend checked it out and and I picked it up. how ever Im going to have 4 days to get familure with the bike so I want to pick up an owners manual so I will know somthing about the bike. as I write this down it sounds silly but Ive been riding for 30 yrs.so It will work out
  17. It's time for me to plan our annual road trip. Our oldest son has picked Kentucky. We will be leaving from Iowa, going interstate through Illinois, Indiana, then starting in Louisville, KY and riding the state for a week. We like to ride on quiet roads rather than 4 lanes. We've never been there so I'm asking for help on roads that are really scenic rides. Also, if there is any places that are "must see's". We will be moteling it, instead of camping this time. We tend to stay in small towns (pop 250-2,000)and stay away from large city's. It's always fun to check in to a local motel and walk to the nearest pub/diner, so if anyone has any suggestions I would sure appreciate it. Thanks for any input... Deb & Gary
  18. My wife and I got caught in the rain once on the interstate and we got wet before I could stop, but that didn't bother me as much as not being able to see. I have an '05 RSTD with a tall windshield, and I wear prescription glasses without a face shield. The combination of water drops on the WS and my glasses made it feel dangerous. We are planning a trip this coming week and it looks like we may run into some rain. Any of you have any pointers for me to improve visibility?
  19. I have been organizing our trip photo, so thought why not share them. So we will start with 1988(lost about 100 pictures some place) & 1989. I'll have to continue the second half of 1989 in the next photo show. http://www.photoshow.com/watch/Xj5JC9NH Phill

    G1 Android

I just got a G1 last week.. I have not used it yet, but downloaded GPS Tracker, it has an associated web site so friends and family can keep track of where you are when off on a trip. I also have installed Google Sky Map, NBA game time lite, movies by fixter, and My Coupons. So far I have only loaded free apps. Anyone else with an Android compatible phone?
  21. I had an emergency tire change this past weekend while on a trip in Arkansas. I had checked my Avon Venoms before the trip, and with 6000 miles on them I thought I was golden. At the Queen Wilhemina Hotel on the Talimena Parkway near Mena, AR, one of our group spotted cords. And not just a few. I had mistreated the tire, letting it run low on a trip. I knew it would have a shortened life, but in 500 miles it had gone through the bars and into the cords. The one tire I could find in Mena on a Saturday was a 150/80-15 IRC Wild Flare. So I am running the wrong size with a tire dubious effectiveness. (Anyone every heard of this tire?) I don't think the Avon was defective, but I am ready to try something new. My local shop here doesn't stock Dunlop Elite IIIs (they called them GoldWing tires??). It will take 5-10 days to get one for $153.99. That seems like a decent price, but I want to ride next Friday. When I inquired about getting an Avon Venom, I was informed that they were replaced with the Avon Cobra. I can get one for $147.99 by Saturday. What is the difference between the Cobra and the Venom? I was told they have an extra channel to improve wet performance. Should I wait 10 days for the Elite 3, or is the Cobra a good tire? Dave
  22. My little sister and her family stopped by our place on their trip from Sterling, Kansas to Chicago, Il and spent then night. This morning the temp was about 40 with light drizzle and her two oldest children - a senior and freshman in high school both said, "Uncle Mark, will you give us a ride on your motorcycle?" Being the good uncle I am - I got the bike out and took them for a ride. Their dad said, "This certainly will be the highlight of their trip." It was worth it to see the smile on their faces. Now I need to plan a trip to Kansas this summer when I can take them on a good long ride!!
  23. Big Bend Friends, This is Blanco Tom's sister, Kerry. I was unable to register as HARDCORE because the user name was taken. So I register as C50 HARDCORE. Enjoyed our trip together and really appreciate your guidance and patience with me on this first trip. Tom and I rode 2 of the 3 sisters today. It was great! Do you want to be my friend? I promise...I am not like my brother. :12101:LOL
  24. I know there are a few folks that want to hear a bit more of the weekend trip of our Texas brothers and sisters, I'll try to fill in some blanks. Let me 1st say Thank you again to all that put this together, as it really was a mini rally. GuthDaddy17 (Larry and his wife Keeley, son Ryan and Anna) Larry procured the lodging for us at the Ramada and it was a great choice. Tom (You know Tom from Blanco) who's wild idea it was to head over to Big Bend. Herb (Master Guns) who is a behind the scenes guy and hates being put in the limelight, for making some killer Marguaritas on Saturday night and is a great guy to be around. Then there were all the nut cases that showed up Dave (Dave 77459) James (Jburrell) Don (Gunboat) Perry and Molly (pktexas) Buddy and Jude (BuddyRich) and then there were a few "New Members" that made the trip with us. Let me tell you about a woman, actually 2 of them Lillian (Tom's Mother) and Kerry (Tom's Sister) for whom this trip was greatly enhanced by them being there. Kerry is a new rider and has recently bought herself a nice Suzuki C50 Boulevard. She only had 600 miles on this bike prior to the trip, but I'll tell you what, she's got the "Stuff" to be serious biker chick material. We have named her hardcore as she never complained about the riding (she put on probably 1200 miles on this trip) and she has grown as a rider in just 4 days with us. Tom is very proud of her as we all were, she did a fantastic job and I hope she will ride with this group more. Tom's Mother (Lillian) is 81 years old and let me tell you something, she is sharp as a tack for her age. Gunboat Chauffered Miss Lillian around this trip in HER '07 Dodge 3500 Dually diesel truck, you gotta love a gal that has a truck like that! She was an absolute pleasure to be around and that lady had us laughing so hard through out the weekend that my guts still hurt! She is one of the coolest women I know and she added so, so much to the experience this weekend it should have been illegal. I look forward to having her with us on another outing that I'll leave the bike behind and be the chauffer. We also had the opportunity to ride with one of Tom's walmart driving friends that owns a newer goldwing (nice bike too) Billy and Caroline. I'll tell Y'all something to those that didn't get the chance to ride back east with the group on Sunday....you missed an excellent ride and the conversations and ribbing that went on the CB's between Tom, Billy and myself had us damn near peeing ourselves. Y'all make sure and ask Tom what happens at 117 mph Of course there was the typical mayhem that always is associated with any of VR.org getting together. What a great time we had with everyone and this trip really helped Lonna and I with being homesick and missing all out brothers and sisters up north and obviously our families. It was great to get away from Houston (love the members here, the city...not so much) and for the 1st time in probably about 3 or 4 months I was able to put on some serious miles on a scoot and help to start clearing my head. I can't thank enough of the folks that helped make this happen for Lonna and myself as we were not going to go due to me not working. They finally needled me enough that I caved in and threw caution into the wind and we went...I am so glad we did. Tom, Can't thank you enough my friend, I look forward to many more rides with you. Gunboat...well you know how we feel and to all the others, thanks for one of the best times and best get togethers that I can remember. I'll get some more of the pics edited and posted up here tomorrow at some point. BTW if any of the members are on the fence about coming to a M&E or a rally, your really shortchanging yourselves out of some of the best time you will EVER have in your life....SHOW UP!
  25. I Know, This is in the watering hole Forum but I want EVERYONE to know the GREAT people that was on this trip..I MAY miss a few but I want to Thank MasterGuns..He stepped in, got a bunch of Adult beverage material and served as a Bartender for our entire Group! He is an exceptional person and I want to Thank him even though he will say da&^it you dont have to do that..THANK YOU HERB!!! Larry,(Guthdaddy) THANK YOU for getting our hotel organized What a fantastic place to stay..They turned over there entire bar area over to us..NO CHARGE! PKTexas (Perry) for being our tour guide to the Marfa Lights..Thank You....Don(Gunboat) For "Driving MS Lilly" and most of all EVERYONE that helped make this one fantastic trip! We made it home about 8PM and had a blast driving back..You all are going to hear things from Brad (Squidley) but DO NOT BELIEVE him!
