  1. Yet another question from this NOOB about his 83 VR: My bike seems to run warm....I wont say hot because the guage never gets in the red but it gets close sometimes. Now granted, this may just be my paranoia and inexperience with a bigger bike (Ive always had smaller bikes w/o temp guages). Anyway, heres what Im seeing....if you will divide the temp gauge into quarters in your minds eye, like a car gas gauge, the top quarter being redline, the bottom quarter being cold and the half in the middle the normal operating range: When I start out in the mornings, the outside temp is about 70 and the bike runs pegged right in the center of the normal operating range...at what would be 1/2 tank on the imaginary markings. But in the afternoon when temps get up around 95 - 100, the bike hangs just below the redline with only maybe a 16th of an inch of green showing. The fan comes on occasionally, not constantly, and if I ride the bike conservatively (65 - 70 mph, keeping rpms around 3500) it doesnt get any hotter. Even if I push the bike it doesnt redline, but the fan runs more frequently. So.....am I a paranoid wack job and this is normal summer heat woes for an 83? Or is that hotter than it should be and if so, what can I check or adjust to cool this bike off a little. Oh, PS, it was just serviced, had the cooling system flushed out, pump tested and coolant replaced with "Engine Ice" brand coolant. Paul
  2. My '87 Venture, which only has 12,000 miles, is starting to blow blue smoke when i've been sitting in traffic and temp gauge goes up. Any other time it's fine. Only when it gets hot does this happen. Any help??

    running hot?

I am new Here, I just purchased a 83 venture royale 1200cc yesterday. It's my first bike in 22 years. Anyway it did great on the highway but when I slowed down to come into town my temp gauge went in to the red, when I got home I could hear the fan running. I checked coolant it seems fine. Is this normal?
  4. I don't know if this has been covered before or not, so I'm asking. When you install RK mufflers on a Venture has anyone noticed that at the joint there is a exhaust leak?I put high temp silicone on the joint and used new RK clamps. The left side seems worst then the right side.I took them off several times and moved the clamp to different positions.Right now the bolt on the clamp is at the bottom and is covering the slits of the muffler at the top and bottom. Each time the mufflers were removed new high temp silicone was applied. Is this problem something that has to lived with or does anyone have a solution?
  5. Hello All. I just took delivery today on an '07 Venture with only 1462 miles. It had been laid down at slow speed. It was slow enough not to have broken the mirrors or scratched up the handlebars and yet low enough that it screwed up the right saddle bag and floor board and a few other cosmetic items. All fixed. It looks as good as new. I got a really good deal on it via eBay. So far, I've bought one other motorcycle, a car, truck and SUV this way and haven't been disappointed. Now to the possible problem. I found it was hard to get it to start and then it would not accept anything other than idle speed until the bike had warmed up to normal operating temperature. Even then it seems to have a bit of a hesitation upon acceleration. The gas has been in there since at least last November so that could be affecting things a bit. As soon as it stops raining and I get over the effects of the drugs I was given for a back procedure this afternoon, I'll take it to the service station and fill it up. Are the Ventures known for being cold natured? The temp is in the low 80's right now. The battery was completely dead and they told me they hadn't run it since back in October or November so it figures that the battery would have gone dead in that length of time. It charged right up with no problem in about an hour. Everything looks right on the bike and it sounds nice. It just seems like it needs to be up to normal temp in order to not die on me when the throttle is twisted more than about an eighth of a turn. I properly applied the choke to get it to crank and idle and backed it off after it got warmed up. My '99 Roadstar sure starts easier and runs better when cold than this thing does.
  6. I am looking at converting my 06 to fuel injection and I have a few questions some of you might be able to help with. The first thing is carb spacing on the Venture. Now if anyone has removed their carbs from the bike (second gen) or has a spaer set sitting around and if you could post or send me the spacing outside to outside and inside to inside, (center to center) on the side to side and front to back measurements that would be a big help. I want to see which FI throttle body setup comes the closest to that spacing so mounting will involve the least amount of custom work on spacing. Second is how are the coils triggered to fired and is the firing order still odd fire. is there a trigger wheel or sensor somewhere i can't find. Here is what I am planning on doing and I am open to any help / suggestions given. So far I have purchased a set of R1 throttle bodies ($120.00). These are from a bike putting out 135 hp at 13,000 (?) rpm and I think the fuel and air flow should be more then enough for a 1300 cc, 98 hp, 5,000 rpm engine and the wiring harness ($50.00). The throttle body I bought came with all the sensors still in place along with the injectors and wiring. The only sensors I need to add is the air flow sensor and a water temp sensor. I’m looking at installing the air flow sensor it in the tee fitting right before the air boxes that sit on top of the current carbs. The water temp I am going to purchase a second water temp housing and see if there is enough room to drill and tap it for a second temp sending unit. I am going to go with the Microsquirt ECU ($400.00) to handle fuel delivery only for now but it will handle a ton of other features also. So far the only issue I’m running into is the throttle bodies, I may have to go with a set off another manufacture so I can adjust the spacing correctly as the ones I bought have a fixed spacing between each pair. Now I am going to be working on this when the weather isn’t so good and the bike could be down for a few days at a time. As I work along I’ll keep you guys posted on progress and problems. Also if anyone can foresee and issues that are already know please let me know as I really don’t want to invest a bunch of cash on a project that isn’t going to work. Thanks....
  7. Just a quick question, first some info... I know how everyone likes it. I changed some gaskets on my 89 VR including the breather assembly which meant draining some coolant! Finished the job,no leaks oil or coolant, Put everything back together added coolant per owners manual topped off overflow tank to full, took for a test ride and every things ok, except now my temp gauge isn't moving and I cant remember what temp it ran before repairs! I know its pumping coolant you can see it when radiator cap is off. I drove it a couple of miles during the test ride, that should have been far enough to get my gauge to move. Could my thermostat be stuck open? I'm totally confused, I've been wrenching on that thing most of the winter and I'm ready to ride, just don't want to hurt her now!! Where should my needle read at normal riding temp. Thanks everyone, and safe riding to all.
  8. The 87 idles at about 1000 after warm up, but the more I drive it the higher the idle gets! Once it gets to nice operating temp the idle goes up to about 2500 and even gets to 3 grand. Any ideas?
  9. Well the M&E went fantastic(dispite the wind) Rick & Marilyn brought in 50+mph winds and the temp droped. It was still a 110 temp inversion for them from 57 below to 53 above. The weather by saturday will be 70 again.YAHOO The food was good and the company was even better had a great time. In attendance was Klaus - (Kbert777) & Denise, Scott-(Tooldood),Rick - (Sarge46) & Marilyn,Linda (THE NAVIGATOR)- Ron (kantornado) nice and cozy group. 10. Not counting to work & back, just pleasure riding. For day trips 200+ miles, we start riding on days that begin at ~47* & get warmer...with nav, for pleasure rides. Assuming dry weather, of course, with high temp heading toward 60*. Quite comfortable. High temp tolerance for us is around 98* if sunny, unless we're on a real trip & don't have to stop much. However, we stay away from any 'stop & go' cities with all their traffic. Also, we'll ride in a downpour/soaker rain if we're heading to a certain destination on a time frame, but try to keep speed down to ~65. We can be soaked for about an hour, but then the pelting gets tiresome. Then are the winds. A constant 35-40 mph wind wears me out, but a continuous 40 mph crosswind makes a much shorter day trip, for me. I could do hotter, colder, windier, & longer in rain [if I need to], but this is my comfort zone for a Day Trip. I try to avoid any rain, if possible.
  11. At our new state of residence Nv,Las Vegas. current temp is 51 F We went through the snow and cold and saw many wrecks and arrived safely. That is the important part. We had a couple of close calls and it never ceases to amaze me that when the temp is at 32 F or below and the roads are snowy and wet why people think they can drive 70mph. I mostly think it natures way of passive aggressive natural selection but the trouble with that is that those idiots seam to take others out with them. We are excited about our new place to live, more riding time and new places to explore with the great people we have met here and the new ones to come. We will mis our friends and riding buddies we had in Mn and hope that if there looking for a little winter vacation they keep us in mind. We have arrived...........................Ron
  12. hay spear or anybody from the land of oz , can you guys put on a time and temp. in your sig. ??? it would be kewl to see what time and temp is down there . squeeze is now using one it looks like it is wet and cold over on the other side rite now .
  13. This past summer I noticed on several ocassions that my temps were going up a little quicker than in the past when it was hot. A couple of years ago I did the bikini side panel mod and it seems to have helped in keeping the bike cool. This was even the case when I was pulling a 450 pound camper. Wednesday I took the bike to work with the morning temp being about 40 degrees to be able to ride home home with it 70 degrees. In my morning ride the temp gage never got off the bottom. Normally it would still go up to about 1/3 on the gauge for that distance. Well, I finally got down under the bike and discovered that when I pulled the engine to replace the gearset, I must not have set the bypass to the correct position. It normally has the top of the lettering pointing toward the five oclock position. I was 180 degrees off. I rotated it around and took a short ride and the temp gage went up to about 1/3. It is easy to understand the temp staying low during cold weather, but I suspect that the getting warmer quicker during hot weather was due to the coolant going thru the radiator too quick to cool adaquate. 14. infared thermometer and it's really cool. Point it at something you want to test for temp and it reads off the red laser dot. What this have to do with a motorcycle you ask? Well, I thought that I could check the temp of the exhaust headers to see if all the cylinders were firing equally. Could even find a dead or fouled plug if needed. Haven't tried it yet, but will the first chance I get. I picked up the unit from Harbor Freight a local discount tool store for about $21 bucks after a 15% discount coupon. It's fairly small and will fit right in with the rest of the things in the tool bag.
