  1. Hopefully this will work - make sure your sound is turned on! Have fun Eugene
  2. I was googling something else and came accross this article. I don't know anything about AIS, but with everyone talking about the RSV chirping, I thought this might be interesting... AIS, What's chirping? Written by StarMyram, on 06-22-2006 19:16 I used to have an 04 V-Star 650 Classic and it made a funny noise while coasting on highway and cruising in town at low rpm. Just got a brand new 05 Roadstar Silverado ...Ya know, this bike is beautiful, torquey, and a nice low "bump, bump, bump" exhaust tone at low rpm. But for crying out loud, WHAT is this annoying chirpy sound?! This bike has it even worse than the V-star! Well, the other night I was fumbling around the running engine with my fingers and eneded up with my finger in the air intake tube hanging down off the AIS pump. The chirping stopped! HA! Found thee source of the noise! Did some research as to where these little pipes went to and fro on the AIS. I decided I could do without the peice of crap on my bike. (don't tell Kyoto! ) I got out my tools and removed the AIS pump and it's filter and all the brackets. Removed the vaccuum pulse line from the intake manifold and put a cap on the tee. I left the chrome tubes attatched to the heads, I used the one left over hose (pushed a 1" long wooden dowel into the hose to seal it off to avoid exhaust gas travelling from one cylinder port to the other through the chrome lines and burning up the hose) and installed the hose to each chrome line. After admiring the new clean, uncluttered look of the front of the engine without AIS, I started the engine and admired the clean V-twin engine sound, with a nice clean exhaust tone with no "fluffing" from the tailpipes (the way it should be.) I took the bike for a ride and Voila! No more chirping sound! Yeah Baby! I understand Californians have emmission laws and lots more tubing on the bikes for charcoal canisters and such so I don't know about thse bikes. Removal of the AIS system is not necessary for performance gains since the AIS does not rob power or performance. But it's just plain ugly to look at, and it annoyed me to no end because of the crappy sound it adds to the engine. Here in Alberta, I can get rid of it without some emmissions police hassling me too. I plan to make steel plates to cover the ports in the heads and remove the chrome tubes completely when I get time this coming winter.
  3. There's been some discussion lately about headset noise, but allow me to tell my particular flavor of it and see if y'all can help. I just installed headsets and used them for the first time. Generally I am please, as the sound quality thru the system and the J&M headsets is very good, but there's some engine noise that I wish wasn't there. I've not noticed the same noise in the speakers. Here are some characteristics of my noise: - clicky-staticy, not whine. Does this indicate ignition, as opposed to alternator/power? - related to engine RPM. - NOT related to radio or intercom volume setting - if either is on and engine running, the noise is there. Does this mean the interference is happening downstream of the amp? - related to front-and-rear individual volume. attenuators...the ones on the handlebars and near the passenger plug-in. Turning these down from MAX definitely cuts the noise down. - same in front or rear jack (assuming the above mentioned attenuators are set the same). Interference happening somewhere between power amp and the front/rear split? Any likely places? Where is that split? My ignition is stock. Wires appear original; I haven't tested their resistance but I have checked the condition of the resistors in the caps which appear normal. Plugs are resistor type. I have another comment on the individual attenuators. They don't just cut volume, they also alter the sound quality negatively when turned down. The best way I can describe it is that the stereo effect seems to gradually go away as you approach the MIN setting. So, turning the attenuators down and the amp volume up minimizes the engine noise, but also reduces sound quality Anybody experienced this? Thanks, Jeremy
  4. Last night on the way home from work I honked my horn on my Venture at a dog that I was coming up on. The horn was so frail in sound that when I got home I pulled into the garage and took a look at the what was going on. The right side horn did not work period. The left horn made a small toot, toot sound. I took off the right side and cleaned up the contacts but still made no sound. There is a little screw on the back side of the horn that looks like it has tar on it. I turned it counter clock wise 1/2 turn and now it sounds like a regular car horn. It was pretty loud and sounds real good.
  5. OK, I thought I'd post this AVI bite of what the MAC's sound like on my '83. It's a little better than the first. I was originally looking at Sept. as a date to start another list, but figured what the heck. So if anyone want's to be added, and we get another group put together, I'll put in another order when we hit the magic number of 10 or more.... I'll have to check with MAC on pricing since it's been a while and edit this post with the details. See below....
  6. My '86" sound system was slowly going down hill. I know they're a lot of tech fixes and upgrades out there. but I'm sound system impaired, so here is a great cheap upgrade. Pull the fairing signal covers off and remove the stock speakers, replace with Wal-Mart replacement upgrades, about $30 bucks, buy a cassette tape adapter $6 bucks(Wal-Mart with the cord adapter.) borrow your kids IPOD(after they put your music on a playlist), plug it in ,stick it in the leather side pocket and WOW what a great sound, works even in a high wind..
  7. Ok, have 2 problems. Bike is a '93 VR. First problem:Radio channel display flashed rapidly and lost sound. Now no channel display or sound. The little red light that shows power on is lit, but nothing coming out of unit. Have had problems with radio losing sound with channel display remaining lit showing station that I was listening to, then will come back on and scare the you know what out of me. It will remain "off" for a few minutes, or it might be 2 or 3 days before it comes back on, or anywhere in between. Just a "wild a-- guess", did the radio give up the ghost or what??? Second problem: The bike has the wrap around rear lights. The lights are in a 2 bulb assembly and 1 of the assemblies keeps burning both bulbs out in less than an hour after replacing the bulbs, which btw is a pain in the you know what. A side note, if you have the same set-up, you need to buy at least twice the amount of bulbs needed because you will end up breaking probably 2 or 3 of them. I want to be able to keep these lights lit because it gives the bike an unbalanced look, and I am unbalanced enough already! :bang head: Any ideas?? Thanks Don H.
  8. I have an 06 RSV with 6 K miles, it has started making a taping sound like lifters tapping almost to the point of a light knocking sound when you first start it up. After a minute it goes away. Is this just normal for this engine? I like this bike but it has the noisest engine of any motorcycle I have owned. Between this tapping noise and the 70MPH wine. I am running 10W40 Synthitic oil, should I run 20W50 instead? Thanks for your help. Dandy1
  9. I'm just wondering if all of your 06rstd's/ventures have a whirring sound like a jet engine when you roll the throttle? I was out Saturday and parked beside a venture that didn't have that sound. Mine has, since it was bought new last August. I thought it was due to the 4 cylinders? Milage and acceleration are both great but definitely doesn't have a V-twin sound. Should I be worried? What can you yama-experts tell me?
  10. Hi, Today was bright and beautiful. My Roadhouse slipons were suppose to arrive Tuesday, but just as I finished washing the 06, UPS dropped them off right by my bike. One day early. Goody goody! They came in two inner boxes in an outer box; wrapped in paper; wrapped in bubble wrap; and tightly sealed. Fantastic chrome! Took me about a half hour to pull the bags, the pipes, and install the new ones. Turned the key, and Wowsy! Deep, throaty, and not a hint of a tinny sound. Just what I was hoping for. Great fit, and a lot lighter than stock. Rode about 125 miles today, and they sang so nice I did not hear the proverbial chirp. I think this pipe will be popular among the owners on this good site. Jim
  11. Brakes that is ! The chap putting on my tires told me i will need Rear Brakes soon. There is only 19000kms on the Bike . Does this sound right ?
  12. New Guy Here from Knoxville My buddy and I both have pre-owned royal stars his being a 1997 tour classic with some popping and occasional backfire on deceleration issues. His carbs had been monkeyed with previously; pilot screws, float settings and throat sync all over the spectrum. Mine is a 99 with the standard gurgling sound and slight popping while decelerating that you get with most factory tuned royal stars and has yet to be fine tuned. Anyway, after learning what I could from you guys here at venture.org, I pulled my buddys carbs and cleaned all passages thouroughly, I set all float heights to 0.645 with calipers against base of float bowl, backed off throttle adjuster on carb #1 to close the throat and checked highest postion of throttle plate (closed) to bottom surface of throttle bore. I checked and rechecked measurement and kept getting conflicting measurements before I realized the hardend steel slide on my quality calipers would not measure the offset angle of throttle plate against the 90 degree angle of throttle bore. Remembering I had an old plastic caliper with a round pin slide I remeasured plate to bottom of bore facing with this tool and got consistent measurements every time and adjusted carb 2 exactly to carb 1, then #3, then #4. All throttle plates adjusted to 0.678. I adjusted pilot screws 2 1/4 turns out, put carbs , airbox, and tank on and... Whoops, I have a problem! Carb #3 popping thru exhaust while throttling off and snuffing type sounds while idling when warm. Pilot screw adjustment had no effect and exhaust gas was cool compared to carb 1,2, and 4. All other carbs and cylinders sounding perfect. This indicated to me that #3 was running very rich. After taking carbs off several times to see what the problem was and rechecking every measurement, my buddy and I devised a wooden jig to re-check float levels with clear plastic tubing with carbs fully assembled leveled and plumbed, and then mounted jig in my vice and set the carbs on top. Guess what, No 3 carb float level measured 1/8 high, while all the rest measured exactly at bottom circumference of main diaphram cover ( which is where I wanted them - high for quick low end throttle response). I took a wild guess and lowered float #3 by 0.035 and rechecked float level with plastic tube gage and it came out exactly level with bottom of radius of diaphram bowl. Now, can someone tell me why this one float would measure 0.035 lower than the rest but gage equally level with the other floats with tube gage? Could it be that float seat is lower than the others? Could it be the float seat is turned in deeper in this one carb? At any rate, we put carbs, airbox and tank back on bike and cranked her up. My God, It Sounds so Good and So In Tune - no backfire and no poping, and no snuffing, sound - Time for a little road check! At constant throttle the bike seemed much quieter than before, but what was amazing was the smooth but powerful and instant throttle response and acceleration from closed throttle to open and every position inbetween. No lug, no lag or hesitation whatsoever. We hit a long stretch of sweepers and mild twistys where I could keep power up in third and fourth gears, while mainly using engine deceleration for braking and all we could hear, other than that wonderful throaty whumping sound, while accelerating out of curve, was a corresponding cooking sound, kind of like hot coffee percolating fast with an underlying boiling sound while decelerating into it. And last but not least; Zero, pops, cracks, sniffles, or snuffles while riding for an hour and a half. We'll check the tuning with vacuum gage and tachometer next week but he and I agree, we'd be hard pressed to change a single thing.
  13. Does anyone know where I can here a sound bite from a RSTD/VENTURE that have these pipe on them I have a 06 RSTD and looking to install a set of samson (slash-cut slip ons) or Baron's Nasty Boy Bag Slash slip-on pipes but i like to hear them before I deside,. Does anyone know which of them is LOUDER?
  14. Anybody got um--if so you like um --how do they sound? Buzz
  15. Please don't think that I'm stupid or anything, but this has been boggleing my mind ever since I got my RSV. Is there anything that you "have to do" to the speakers before you wash the bike? Can they get wet? If they do, will it hurt them? I'm not trying to sound stupid, but this is my first bike with an audio system and I don't want to ruin it. Thanks!
  16. I'm looking for a set of pipes for my 05 RSTD. I want 'em loud and low end (sound). Any of you all have any suggestions? Anyone have any recordings/ video of the pipes?
