  1. Sorry guys, I thought my other post didn't take, but I just didn't look back far enough. About to go read responses now. About to drive 4 hours to Sierra Vista to test ride a Tour Deluxe in the morning. Jim
  2. When you go to reinsert drive shaft will it slide all the way in and still not be connected right or will it stop before being fully inserted if not connecting right. \ I pulled mine and greased it and it slid right back in no probs so before I button things up would like to know.\ \ Thanks John
  3. what mobil 1 final drive oil should i be using ,( 2008 rsv ) is it 75w-90 full synthetic ? thanks ,mike b.
  4. I am just getting back into riding and would to like to do the basic maintenance myself. The other day I noticed a very small amount of oil at the rear of the bike (size of a silver dollar)the oil leak that is. After reading the forums I believe it is from the final drive? How can I check this out. And if the oil level is low what and how do I replace it? Also what other basic maint. do I need to perform? Oh yeahIhave 05 RSV. Thanks.
  5. This was parked next to my venture outside the restaurant tonight. Couldn't find the owner though. Not sure that I would ride it on the road. Although, shaft drive and a rubberband used for seat spring. Ya, definitely wouldn't take it on the road...
  6. My 07 RSV has got a nasty bad whine, around 40 -50 mph its the worst. the farther you lean the worse it gets and if you pull in the clutch you can feel a slight vibration in the floorboards too. I have got 3800 miles on it now. I'm not sure it is gear noise due to the fact that the noise does not change on coast or acceleration. the noise only gets louder when leaning. This makes me think it has more to do with the axle bearings. I will be taking it in later this week. Do any of these symptoms match what any of you that have had final drive issues? Ken C.
  7. I noticed my new '06 RSV has the clicking from rear wheel when backing (and even moving fwd). I've seen a number of threads that seem to point to needing the Clutch Hub Drive Pins and maybe the Drive Splines greased. How long should a dealer need to do this job? I'm thinking of having it done while on vacation but wanna know what to expect for time and dollars. Also, this isn't covered under warranty by any chance is it?
  8. I installed Avon tires today and decided to check the splines on the drive shaft,.. There was a little grease in there, but I stuffed some moly on for insurance. I installed the pumpkin back on as per bulletin and finished putting everything back together. Once off the lift I went to put the bike in gear and heard a strange crunch/clank noise.. bike stalled. I tried repositioning the pumpkin a number of times now and got the rear diff lined up good.. but here's the strange thing.. I can spin the rear tire even if the bike is in gear. I've been reading all the posts here and am thinking that the shaft isn't pushed into the tube all the way.. When I push the drive shaft into the tube is it suppose to seat and not turn? I can't get it to mesh with anything,.. it sort of spins. Do I need to pop the rubber boot off the top of the drive shaft tube (if I can find it) and get the drive shaft to mesh with the gears using the coat hanger hook trick.. ???
  9. OK I know its not about a motorcycle. But I would like to see if any body here would know the average MPG on a Camaro with a LT1 motor.? car has 91,000mi uses no oil and no leaks. A good friend of mine just bought himself a 880 - 830? Harley motorcycle. I went by his house today to replace a belt on his police car. I was teasing him that I should be a police officer due to him having a 2007 Chevy pickup - New Harley and the Z28.He said he was selling his Z28 Super Sport and wanted to know if I wanted it? This Camaro looks in excellent shape and he always kept it show room clean. Anyway I wanted to get another car to drive to work when the weather was bad. And my Farm truck F-150 4X4 gets about 10 -14 mpg plus it has over 217,000mi. He said I could have it for $5,500 dollars, guess this is a good price?. I asked him what mpg he got on the Z28 and he said I don't know I just drive it. he does not worry about gas mileage. I'm not worried about the motor or drive train due to him being a A.S.E mechanic too. Anyway I was wanting to know a ball park average on a 1997 Z28?. Being a sport car I'm not expecting it to get 30+mpg, but I would be happy if it gets 20-22mpg? I do have a 1981 Camaro setting in my back yard which does not look like much but with a 6.6L olds rocket bored 60*over I be lucky to get 10 MPG so it has not been drivin in some time. I'm going by there tomorrow and give it a test drive and see how it performs and if my body will let me enjoy the ride of a sports car again? Buddy
  10. we got our 1st new toy in today , and i got to brag a little bit , its pretty kewl , alumn. frame and fiber glass , goin to load the bikes up this week end and take it for a test drive , when we brought it down form OH. the driver had no dif. in gas mileage going up with no trailer and pulling it back .
  11. Hi I am looking for a drive shaft for a 1986 and newer Venture Royal. Today I broke mine on my trike. Don't ask just that I did something I shouldn't of. All I need is the drive shaft. All I can stay is that it made so much noise when it broke and by the time I got it stopped I thought the hole bike was gone. Thank god I was only going slow .But nothing else happened to it so if you know were I can get a new or used more then likely used driveshaft please let me know. Now I have one more thing to fix. I will take the one I have into a driveshaft shope and see what they will say and if it can be fixed. Thanks Guys Bikenut:sick::crying:
  12. If anyone has used a string to align the rear wheel on your dirt bike (or any chain drive) you will know where I am going. Have had the 04 for about a month now and it always felt like it was pointed a hair to the left going down the road. I just put a new set of Venoms on last week and had everything apart. Even pulled the drive shaft for a check. Every thing looked good, carefully re assembled, axles straight, nothing tweaked, still felt like something was off. Today I did a check (see attached diagram) and sure enough the front wheel is about .4" to the right. Just to make sure I was on the right track I rolled the bike to a different spot on the tire and checked again. Same reading. I balanced the wheels myself and the tires run remarkably true with the wheel. Then I checked the old Vstar and go figure, it is dead on. Bike has never been dropped, no damage what so ever. Can't see any way to adjust. Adding a shim between the drive shaft tube and dif. housing would be moving it the wrong way. Do I just have a bent bike??

    No Demos To Ride (Arghhh)

Is this something new in the industry ? I went to 2 different Yamaha dealerships to hopefully test drive an RSV, and they had absolutely none in the showroom, however, there were 2 being held at their warehouse. Last new bike I bought (1999) the dealer handed me a set of keys and said "have fun". I actually bought the bike after the test drive. I don't think I'd buy a bike unless I could test drive it first, maybe I'm a minority in that aspect. Maybe I never will get my RSV. Oh well, that's my rant for the day. Ya'll have a nice day and ride safe. -Dean-
  14. Been home a couple weeks, and with the nicer weather, decided it was time to get the second gear issue taken care of before riding season got into full swing. Spent yesterday afternoon stripping the scoot and hauling out the power pack. Then spent a couple hours in the garage stripping the power pack down, and cleaning the parts. When I had the drive shaft in the parts bath, after I'd gotten all the old grease off her, something didn't quite look right. Under closer inspection, I found that the teeth on the rear of the shaft looked like an ol' Inuit women's smile, half of the teeth were gone. It looks like every tooth is half worn out. So now I'm in the hunt for a replacement drive shaft. Will check with the local cycle salvage yards, but thought I'd post with the real experts and see if anyone has a spare that they'd let go cheap. 84 Venture Royale. Ozzie
  15. I'm bored!!! As I set here and look outside. There is close to 10" of snow and still snowing. Our area is under a Blizzard warning. Aready shoveled the drive way (can't tell it now). Nothing on tv. Nobody home to talk to. Anyone feeling this way?
  16. I needed a new rear tire so I thought I would try removing it myself.I did it and also serviced the drive shaft ,changed brake pads, changed final drive gear oil, realigned the saddlebag rails, changed the speed sensor, did the hub service.Put it all back together and EVERYTHING WORKED GREAT.Thanks to all the information and pictures in the tech section,I would have never attempted this on my own.One thing I did do was build myself a safety stand that connects to the trailer hitch and extends as the bike is lifted.I drilled several holes to install a hitch pin and it held the bike sturdy while it was on the lift.
  17. I was wondering just how hard it is to replace/repack the front wheel bearings on a front wheel drive car. A 95 Chrysler New Yorker to be exact. I am not mechanically gifted, but I have done a lot of work on my cars in the past 30 years including bearings on rear wheel drive cars. Just wondering if this is something that I could do myself or should I take it to a garage to get it done? Thanks in advance. Wayne
  18. I am curious if anyone knows whether you can change out the rear final drive (on an 83-85) with the newer 86 and up pumpkin and drive shaft together? I know the 83-85 has separate drive shaft and final drive so one would have to change out the complete assembly, but if that is possible and it bolts up to the 83-85 swingarm (plus the yoke spine) and matches the rear wheel spline, then it could very well be possible. I need someone who has checked this option out. Louie
  19. I have a question for anyone interested. If you could , would you make everyone drive "your " speed? That is if you were that all-powerful or had the authority. I'm just being curious as to why some people drive the way they do.
  20. To MN to bring THE NAVIGATOR back to VEGAS to start a new adventure. Hope to see some of you while I'm back there. It will be a nice drive out. Flight leaves at 2.30 leaving for the airport at 1pm...................................Ron
  21. we were out for a bike ride seen ya go by twice if it was you but you were going so fast it was hard to tell for sure it sure looked like the way you drive though [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_Xygo2054Q&feature=related]YouTube - Car has too much weight[/ame] :fishin::fishin: Happy New Year Buddy Dray
  22. I am still reading about the winter storms you guys in the south are getting and the havoc it is causing! Please take care and if you dont have to drive...dont. We came home last night from Winnipeg....normally a 2.5 hour drive...it took us 5 hrs. (we also stopped to eat). But even with being used to the bad stuff it still was awful! Take care and hopefully you are all ok. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all!
  23. I'm starting this thread because the other one is getting so long and because I have a specific question. We know 2 things are true... 1. If we fly to the US, we need a passport. 2. If we drive to the US we DO NOT need a passport. So, IF we drive to the US, can we then hop a plane (in the US) and fly to somewhere else WITHIN the US without a passport? Has anyone done this?
  24. I remember recently reading threads that talked about computers crashing and people losing all kinds of stored info pictures, files, folders, etc. We had our computer crash on the Th to the point it wouldn't even restart, all we were getting was a blue screen. We had knowledge of a small computer shop locally (Practical Computers Inc.) a husband & wife with a couple of employees, anyway they have been around for a long time. We took seven years of our life to them in a dead tin can on Monday the Th and and got it back on the RD with a like new hard drive, double the memory and all of our stuff we thought was lost is still there, and we have the old hard drive if they missed anything (they said bring in the old hard drive and they would find it). Yes it cost $150,00 to have it fixed. If I would have installed the new $45.00 CD writer two weeks before the computer crashed (it crashed while putting the CD writer in) we would have had the capability to save things to disc so we wouldn't have been taking a chance on losing them later. Live and learn. Put a disc writer in your computer so you can download your memory's. I hope this will give some of you a reason to smile as I'm sure there is a computer repair shop that can save your memory's too.
  25. With all of the posts about final drive problems and noises, I thought this post might help. I saw it on a Gold Wing forum, but it certainly applies to the Venture/RSTD rear drive unit as well. They are nearly identical to the GW drive. http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/Shaft.html
