  1. It's been a while since I last visited the site. I had a 2005 Royal Star Midnight Venture that I bought "new" in 2007 and rode for 10 years. I loved that bike and toured several states on it trouble free. Over the years, I kept waiting for Momma Yamaha to come out with an updated version of the "Venture". As fate would have it, Yamaha came out with the new Transcontinental about 3 months after I bought my new 2017 Harley Street Glide. I was pretty bummed out because I probably would've bought the new Venture at that time had they made a more timely debut. I paid down my Street Glide over the next 3 years to minimize the hit I would take on trading it in. As my Harley trade-in became right side up and the prices on the 2018 Transcontinentals began dropping significantly, I was finally triggered into getting one. I'm very happy with my new Venture as it is a fantastic bike. I look forward to reading the forums on this wonderful machine and maybe learning something new in the process.

    +1 I think it's inevitable. Just hope they don't change the basic styling of the RSV. It's a classic "old school" look that I dearly love.
  3. +1 Mobile 1 Racing 4T 10/40 is specifically designed for use with "wet clutches". It's ranked right up there with Amsoil as the best synthetic.
  4. One last thing and I'll stfu. The guys on these internet sites devoted to the RSV have forgotten more about this bike than the Yammie reps will ever know. Why you say? Because they eat, sleep, and "bleep" the RSV. Most Yamaha techs hardley ever see a RSV, let alone work on them.
  5. Do I think Yamaha reps would replace a lot parts they didn't have to trying to resolve the problem? Absolutely!!! You're giving these guys way too much credit! As I said in my last response, the first thing you have to know about Yamaha reps is that they... "dont' know jack shi t about their own product". I speak from experience. I could tell you horror stories you wouldn't believe. They will look for the easiest way out every time. I love my RSV and truely believe it is one of the best bikes I've ever owned. But if anything would keep me from buying another Yamaha, it would be the after the sale support from the dealership service departments. ediddy, at least try my suggestion, at this point you really have nothing to lose.
  6. Hey no kiddin. I can understand the frustration, but the guy was just trying to help. The first thing you ought to know about Yamaha reps and dealer techs is that they don't know jack shi t about their product. The problem with the "clicking sound" or loud noise coming from the rear end may just be a simple case of "dry clutch hub pins", not "dry splines". It's a matter of semantics, or nomenclature. You start talking about "dry splines" and you're really over simplifying the problem and throwing them off the track. I had to have my rear wheel and drive shaft bearings replaced before they heeded my call to check for "dry clutch hub pins". And this was from a "5 star" rated Yamaha service department. I'd refer them to the Yamaha Technical Service Bulletin (TSB M2005-015). And print out this excellent instructional guide from another site and take it with you to the dealer bub. http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/index.php?action=article&cat_id=002006&id=230 And then calm down with your brothers here who empathize with your situation and are trying to help.

For those of you in and around the Southern California area who've been thinking about a new RSV, there's a local dearler here selling '07 RSV's for $14,999 out the door (That's tax, license, & registration included in the price). "Out-the-Door Motorsports" here in L.A. is a volume selling dealer whose prices cannot be beat here in this area. A year and a half ago I bought my "new" leftover '05 RSMV for $15,200 (otd) from a dealer up north about 175 miles from me and thought that was the deal of the century. That's probably what OTDMS would sell an '07 RSMV for here too. I should've of checked with them before I pulled the trigger on my deal, but at the time felt there was no way I could come close to the deal I got. I didn't lose much on the price, but it's the depreciation and resale value where I took the hit. At any rate, I'm extremely happy with my RSMV as it has turned out to be a better bike than I could have ever imagined.
  9. Did the mod on my stock pipes and as Freebird said..."sounds like a cat fart'in in a can". Buy some pipes.
  10. Even after putting it in gear, there's always that inch or two it'll roll till the gear locks up.
  11. It could be just a matter of time before that motor ( a detuned version) comes out in a revamped RSV. What ya think?
  12. Good luck on finding a dealer competent enough to handle the swap. Most of them will not even know what you're talking about when you try to explain it to them. I had some dealers ride my bike and they couldn't hear anything out of the ordinary. I eventually gave up. It drove me nuts at first too. But now, 12K miles later, I hardly even notice it. I know that's not much of a solution, but you will get use to it eventually. From what I've seen of most dealers, I wouldn't want them tearing my bike apart anyway.
  13. I'd be very leery of a private party test ride. I'd take the keys to whatever he rode over on with the understanding that if he dropped my bike, he's going to buy it. And he isn't going to get his vehicle back until mine was repaired or paid for.

    Batteries are kinda funny that way sometimes. Somtimes they'll come back good as new and you never have another problem with them. So, at least it's worth a try. After I get it charged, I'll let her sit a week and try it again. Any hesitation at all and it'll be new battery time. You don't wanna try to push start one of these babies out on the road.

    Left the bike on the "ACC" the other day and the battery is dead. Gonna put the battery tender on it tonight and see if I can bring her back to life before I put $90 down on a new one.

  18. I knew it would get a "rise" out of a lot of these guys. Just wanted to see their responses. And Hipshot, I don't see what being from California has to do with anything. Hey whatever floats your boat is alright with me. I've had a lot of great bikes over the years. But none that I'd particularly like to go back to.
  19. Out side of nastalgic reasons, why would anyone buy a 22 year old bike? Not trying to be sarcastic. I just don't get it. In a couple more years , you won't even be able to get parts for them anymore. Technology has long passed them by. What is the appeal?
  20. As others have said, I can't quite get past the looks either. And I agree with you about the gear box and mirror placement (mirror location is terrible), but the power is strong and smooth (feels quicker than my RSV). And I don't quite understand how anyone could feel "cramped" on that bike, the thing is very long and roomy.
  21. Well, I rode a Vision on my trip to Death Valley last weekend and was pretty impressed with the bike overall. Has plenty of smooth power, very, very comfortable. I don't believe that I've ever sat on a more comfortable bike. The ergos were perfect for me (6'1", 230 lbs.). What's truly unique about this bike is that the damn thing fits almost anyone because of the handle bar pull back, low seat height, and extra long floor boards. One of my buddies is 5'8" and had no problem handling this huge bike. I say huge, cause it's damn near as long as the U.S.S. Missouri and weighs 890 lbs. wet. It kinda freaks you out at first cause the windshield is so far out in front of you, and couple that with the fixed fairing, and it takes some getting use to. I was doing almost 75 when I dropped down into 6th gear and it felt like it wasn't even needed. It's a very stable bike in that it handles cross winds, sweepers, and twisties extremely well. The adjustable windshield (electric) makes a huge difference for the passenger when in the highest position. The model we had had everything except the navigation system (heated grips, seats, etc, very nice). Sound of the stereo was excellent. Plug-ins in's galor for your MP3 player and IPOD. Saddlebags are lacking somewhat in space, but the trunk is a good size. We met a writer (Clement Salvadori) from "Rider Magazine" on the trip who was doing a review and of the Vision (he was riding his Vision with a group of BMW sport touring riders) for the magazine at a restaraunt in the park and he sat down with us and picked our brains about our impressions of the bike. I'm gonna get the next issue to see if he plagerized any of us. :lol: The bike drew crowds everywhere we went. It's a great machine and I would recommend it to anyone seeking a serious touring bike. (By the way, I had my Midnight RSV parked right next to it and got just as many compliments as the Vision. People were fascinated by the Vision, but also appreciated the "old school" look of the RSV. A lot of people just couldn't handle the futuristic look of the Vision.)

  23. Taking a trip to Death Valley in a couple of weeks with a group of friends. My friend is in good with the local Victory dealer and they're going to let him take a demo Vision for the weekend. I'll get a little saddle time during the trip and let you know what I think. If Yamaha comes out with the proposed new V-Max motor (V-4, 1800cc, fuel injected, etc.), it wouldn't take much tweaking to put a de-tuned version of it in the RSV, hmm... What a bike that would be.
  24. Wow, some pretty low mileage being reported for the Avons. Maybe there is a significant difference in their bias plys vs. their radiials. I run Avon Venom R's (radials) on my VTX and have got 12K easily out of two sets, so go figure.
