  1. Hi there Dogman For sure something is going on. Here are a couple of things to consider. First a lot of super automatic chargers will not work properly on a motorcycle battery. Instead they report the battery as defective and shut off. So be careful of that. It is not uncommon for the RSV to develop a parasitic drain on the battery which will deplete it's charge. If the parasitic draw is even minimally substantial many maintainers cannot overcome it and the battery will still go dead. Drains are frequently found in the audio system ( CD changers are a common culprit). You might have to track it down with a good meter. Then of course there is the charging system. The stator, r&r or wiring could be causing you grief. Good Luck Mike

  3. If you are leaking enough fuel to soil the floor you will have a terrific gas smell. More intense than the usual carb vent evaporation odor. Put a pan under the bike to catch whatever is offending. My guess coolant drip, unless it is under a shock. Mike

  5. Nanci I think a lot of us are having similar issues. I sure hope some engineer over at Yamaha or Harley or Victory ### is watching this thread. One of the advantages of a hydraulic clutch is it can be made to feel extremely soft. I don't know why Yamaha's engineers purposely design these things so they feel like a very hard to pull cable system. Have they never sat in a traffic jam? Without much additional effort on the part of manufacturers we could have a stronger clutch with a softer pull. It's called hydraulics. OK back to you Nanci. I don't know of any easy solution at this time. But I think I will start looking at different master cylinders hoping to find one with a better advantage that is possible to mount on our bikes. Mike

  7. Did you open the gas cap when this was occurring? Here are my thoughts. Electrical component (ign switch, module, coils etc) getting hot and shutting down. Aftermarket fuel pump not up to the task. Tank vent partially blocked (gas cap will tell). A faulty component such as a side stand or kill switch. And of course a loose connection.   8. Thanks for the replies. I was hoping for some first hand experience. But given that dentists use ultra violet light activated epoxy for tooth repair, which seem to hold up. I will probably get a tube and run a few tests of my own. Mike
  9. I really don't see a problem with these readings. Are you having dead battery issues or some such thing? Or are you just asking if things seem ok? Mike

  11. Charging voltage has to be higher than battery voltage or the unit is not charging. Usually half a volt or more higher. But not so high as to overcharge. Unfortunately there are only two conditions available, charging or not charging. If you fall into the not charging category then it is time to find out why. Faulty component, high resistance in the circuit, to low of RPM etc. etc. Personally for starters I like to use a lab scope and look at ripple. But then I have a lab scope where most people do not. It will quickly point up a faulty leg in the stator or rectifier. Mike
  12. Get the Custom Dynamics 100 led cluster. You'll be glad you did. There are some stainless steel trim pieces which can be put on the tail light lens to dress it up. Mike
  13. After switching to reserve I rode my RSV all the way until it quit. That reserve doesn't mean it will go forever. They'll still run out of gas. Reserve is supposed to be one gallon. Some are, others maybe not so accurate. Also riding conditions will make a big difference. Still it is nice to have the warning when getting low on fuel. Mike
  14. A 2007 Royal Stare Venture was designed for Bias Ply tires. Since it's your bike use what you will. Some people use car tires. I prefer to stay within design limits. Mike
  15. A 2008 is a Royal Star Venture not a Venture Royal. Check Pinwall on e-bay. They can probably get you the parts you need. Mike
  16. The AIS system adds air to the exhaust to burn excess fuel. The AIS system is supposed to shut down during deceleration. That is what the vacuum controlled valves are for. If an AIS valve is faulty or not getting the proper vacuum you will get popping during deceleration. If you are getting popping during normal idle or during normal cruise you are running to rich. Bypassing or plugging the AIS system is a common repair often performed on the Venture / RSTD. I see nothing wrong with it. It is often an easier procedure than spending the time and energy to isolate the actual problem. That said I prefer to keep my AIS system functioning. It uses no power and does help clean the air. My personal feeling is, if I am getting popping in the exhaust something is wrong and I want to find it. If I were helping someone over the telephone or via text messaging I would go as eusa1 did and just have them plug the AIS. There are just to many variables on a used bike and seen through somebody else's eyes to boot. The OP now has an operational bike and he can track down the issue at his leisure. Mike

  18. I doubt you would have the power to pull a taller rear end and still have reasonable performance. Mike
  19. A toggle switch should be just fine. However if you want to connect them through the headlamp switch then a relay would be the way to go. Mike
  20. Whine - It has been my experience these bikes are oil sensitive. I put Amsoil in mine and developed a screech. It was so loud I almost couldn't ride. So I switched back to Yamalube and the screech eventually subsided. So you may need clutch baskets and what not and you may not. Rear End - I am one of those guys who swapped out the rear end. I like the increased torque the lower gear ratio provides. Clutch - The clutch springs get weak and then the clutch slips. It is an easy fix with several options. While you are there you might as well change the discs. The Venture is one of the most reliable bikes ever built. But that doesn't mean it is perfect in every way. Good luck with your new bike. Mike
