"The Bill amends the Highway Traffic Act to prohibit driving or operating a motorcycle on a highway while a person under the age of 14 is a passenger on the motorcycle, with a view to promoting safety on Ontario's roads and protecting youth from preventable injuries. " Promoting Safety and Protecting Youths (yoots).. so anyone against this law hates safety and hates kids.. shame on you.. In all seriousness, I hope this bill doesn't pass for you. We're lucky out here in NS where we have a larger per capita motorcycle community than any other province in Canada, so our voices are easily heard.. some of our local politician are bikers so that works in our favour. Age 14? Way too high.. I can understand protecting the young ones, too small to sit safely on a bike, but 14?? Best of luck with that one!! Oh gees, wait now.. that would mean I couldn't go to Manitoba with one of the kids on the bike if this bill passes? Talk about Ontario being the new "Drive past" province!
  2. A couple of years ago, while out on the VStar, the weather was less than ideal, well below the freezing mark but the roads were dry, no snow anywhere but nut-cracking cold.. That's when I realized that frozen rubber don't stop the bike at all.. if anything it greases the road up more for you to slide. And it didn't much to 'lock it up through the intersection'.. Luckily for me no one was going through at the time and I was allowed to live through my stupidity to ride another day.. I dare say the E3s I have on the Venture seem to be doing very well with the cold but I'm super overly cautious with them all the same.. Tomorrow, 40'F and sunshine (expected highs), and I plan to ride for the day Cheers M8
  3. And there you go, Rick.. you hit the key word :hypothermia:.. What people generally forget when riding is that the wind flowing through and around the rider wicks away the heat from the outter body forcing the inner body to try to balance the heat out and poof all of a sudden you're in a heat imbalance of deficit and that's when problems start to hurt your riding.. if you're shivering or cold, your mind is not on that important ride safety factor and this can cause accidents and worse. A lot of us like to brag how brave and tough we are by riding our bikes in as cold of weather as possible. Some of us do it in comfort and some of them do it but suffer.. And some people have NO choice but to ride their bike in the cold so they either quickly learn to adapt or go through a lot of suffering. I can't wear electical heating gear on a bike.. it doesn't work for me. I simply get too warm. I ended up selling my heated vest and gloves to a buddy. Ideally, all I need is to be air sealed and I'm good to go for a long distance cold weather ride. Have you ever heard the survival rules "If you sweat your dead" and "Keep your head covered"? These apply in bike riding as well to some extent.. When you're getting all dressed up to jump on the bike, a lot of us are fussing around, packing up, moving around a lot and building up heat and in result start to sweat.. once you jump on the bike with a wet back and the cold wind gets to it, your ride is now going to be miserable.. it doesn't take much. I showed this to a buddy of mine who was always cold on the bike, once he learned to keep 'dry' before getting on his bike he could last most of the day riding in the cold.. =) Keeping your head covered is very simple and it's all about making sure no skin is exposed to the wind. In the artic you never take your hat off as 90% of your heat loss is through the top of your head, hair or no hair. If you take your hat off, your hands and feet will start to get cold right away as your body will take the heat from the extremities to ensure the core gets what it needs to survive.. However, you have to regulate your heat so you don't sweat as well.. If the wind grabs a hold of your skin it will suck out any heat you have through that opening. I will typically wear a Schampha fine fleeced Balaclava over my head which keeps all the wind off my head, neck, ears and cheeks, leaving no more than the bridge of my nose exposed, but still allowing me to pull it down lower should it get a little too warm. Keeping the wind out of your jacket by having gloves that go up over your sleeves and "putties" over the lower leg part of your chaps or wind pants, not allowing the wind to come up inside your pant legs. Believe it or not I still wear steel toe capped boots in the cold but not suffer cold feet. I typically ride with my legs stretched forward a bit so the wind is hitting more of the sole of my boot than straight on the toe. Also, a dual sock combo works great. One inner thin sock with a thicker sock outside.. the inner sock wicks the moisture away from your foot (keeping it dry) and the thicker sock insulating your foot from the cold.. if your feet are dry, not sweaty you can last a lot longer. Remember the "keep your head covered" line? If your head is covered (balaclava) then your body will keep the heat in your body and not rob Peter to pay Paul.. Now the ONE important mod I did to my bike that makes a world of difference for me is my sheepskin seat cover mod =) Though a sheep skin is nice to sit on year-round, it keep your butt warm and not sweaty sitting on the vinyl seat. The mod I did on my 'winter cover' is that I have a beaver tail built in. This sheep skin is cut in such a manner that there is a longer and wider flap in the front that when you're riding the bike, the wind naturally curls this large flap up and over my lap, covering the top of my thighs and my erhm, jewels. Strangely enough, no matter how well I dress up for a cold ride, the top of my thighs and crotch get cold and I can't do anything about it, especially so on this bike.. but the beaver tail flap comes up and over while riding and I'm all nice and toasty, able to enjoy the ride and not wondering where things have disapeared to.. =) Having said all that, Cold weather riding IS indeed fun when it's done properly but you also have to be careful for the harder wheel rubber and the cagers not expecting bikers to be so foolish as to be riding out in this cold. What a strange breed of people we are..
  4. It is the same here, illegal to pass on the right but when slow duff is occupying the fast lane you have nil choice, especially when they're doing so much under the speed limit..
  5. I'm guessing because of the way he was trying to get me to say it, basically incriminating myself.. If I said I was going 80 in a 65 zone I'm sure he would have made the ticket out to that amount

So erhm on a recent trip to and from NYC, I'm rushing through Maine at a decent pace late one night / early morning when all of a sudden over the rise I come up onto a brown car in the fast lane, and he ain't going fast.. so I swing over to the right, flash of lights and signal to alert the driver of my intentions of passing him on the right cause apparently the slow drivers love the left lane and won't budge.. but the closer I got to him it was ooops, State Trooper.. Ooooh.. Ok hi there.. A quick peek at the speedo shows me doing closer to the speed limit than I had thought so no worries.. but when I slid past him I got the lights to pull over. Anticipating this, I come onto the binders and pull over to the far right in time to watch him shoot past me and have to reverse until he can stop behind me like he oughta.. I'm WAY over to the right, almost to the ditch to make sure the gentleman won't be in harm's way when he comes over to me. Me, being a kind and decent soul have no one to blame but myself for speeding so I'm not going to make his life difficult for my sillyness. Nice guy eh? He sashays up to me like a Trooper would, hand on gun, ready for anything.. "Do you know why I stopped you" he asks.. "No sir, I do not know why you stopped me.. why did you stop me?" "You have NO idea why?" he asks again.. Erhm again my answer is no. "I pulled you over for speeding. May I see your driver's license and registration" he requests. He goes off to his car, takes a while and then comes back and asks "Do you know how fast you were going?" "Yes, I was doing the posted speed limit..." "Oh no you weren't he declared, otherwise I would not have pulled you over for speeding.. How fast do you think you were going?!" again he asks.. "Without trying to make an argument out of this, I earnestly believe I was doing the posted speed limit, hence why I was able to pull over onto the shoulder so quickly while you shot past me like you did. I believe YOU were travelling much slower than the posted speed limit in the wrong lane..." was my response.. After this goes on for a few minutes, he hands me a warning ticket with no posted speed declaration on the ticket.. The poor guy had no means of knowing how fast I was going since I came up to him from behind so quickly, and pulled over before I got in front of him enough to get a bead on me.. And though I'm not from Maine, I would daresay that he can't issue a speeding ticket without a tag on my speed.. either by Ladar or by my own admission.. Mom said I was born at midnight, not last night Needless to say I locked my cruise control down to the posted speed limit after that until I got back into Canada lol.. But the question (after a long story, sorry) is that can a Trooper give you a ticket only by his gut sense that you were speeding or does he need a confirmation of such?

  8. Thanks Brad, do you find a diff between Premium and Regular gas? I tried testing it on several occassions and will always do worse on regular gas with my bike.. and always do worse on Irving's gas than I will say Esso or Ultramar.. Someone said its something to do with Irving's slightly higher sulphur content of their fuels but I dunno.. When ever you compose a message there is a box below your text input box full of smileys and stupid irritating happy face gits (anim gifs).. can you spell the word annoying as hell? Anyway, is there a way to NOT have this box show up or at the very least can someone kill that *&$^$^ big head one that keeps waving its arms around? Of all that I like about this forum, THIS is enough to burn my retinas.. Some people are scared of clowns.. I'm irritated by anim gifs.. help!
  10. I can honestly say that mine saved two lives and caused an idiot driver into a guard rail at the same time. Better the guard rail due to her stupid fault than killing two innocents with the same stupidity. Cell phones, cars and idiots don't mix.. A driver may not give a biker the same respect or space as a full sized vehicle on the road but when they think there's a semi up their rear, you get the required attention. Loud pipes saves lives to some degree, but a LOUD horn does wonders..
  11. Meh, that's almost what we're paying per LITRE.. and you guys whine of your gas prices.. "Sheeesh!" Mileage is hard for me to check since my bike is a yank bike.. I measure the distance in MILES but put fuel in it by the litre which makes for calculations a lot more fun. However, on average I can say that I get 10 miles per litre of fuel (roughly 40 miles per gallon), but it's the litres per 10 miles I use to gauge my fuel consumption.. So if I put 16 litres of fuel when showing 160 miles on the clock, I'm feeling I'm doing OK. However, after being away for a month and back again to ride in the fall weather, cold weather that is, I'm finding my mileage dropped a lot.. ouch.. 16 litres to do 148 miles.. on average roughly 15 to 20 miles less in distance for the same amount of fuel.. I've recently done air filters an oil change but that didn't change things much.. Running with K&N air filters and Screaming Eagle pipes (love the sound in the cold), burning Premium fuel as yes, I do notice a big enough difference in fuel consumption.. Does the cold actually affect the fuel consumption THAT much?
  12. Well, after quite a few months of the final fix to the trunk latch bracket, I am happy to report that the 'weld' is still holding strong and firm with no signs of weakening. I was a little worried that with the cold weather it would be brittle but hey, it's still holding good and strong. See original article for the fix. It worked great for me!   13. How do you use these clip on tachs? What do you actually clip it onto? I synched my carbs a couple of times this summer and it made an improvement to the feel of the engine if nothing else.. however no idea what the revs were.. Cheers M8
  14. I placed my Stebel under the front fairing (shroud) and it's louder than loud I left the stock horn on the right side just to keep the spot occupied..

  19. I'd use YamaLube.. Funny though, I'll put Amsoil in the VStar but not in the Venture.. Couldn't tell you why though.. doesn't feel like it would need it.. SeaFoam in the gas yes.. but putting it in the engine JUST before the oil change, running it just long enough to heat it up properly is supposed to help get rid of the gunk.. though I have never done it, I have heard of many who have without any bad report.. However..
  20. Funny I have a lot less reflection issues with the XXL than I did with the stock. I also have a leather gas cap cover that fits over the chrome gas cap like a sock. Looks neat..
  21. That was me ; ) I'm heading back into the US on Wednesday going through Maine, NY then through to Michigan with the cage unfortunately and was wondering what fuels to avoid. I remember going through some of those areas for Rolling Thunder last year and our hosts were avoiding certain brand gas stations as their fuels weren't recommended for bikes. Blended fuels?
  22. I have mine mounted under the cowl (the stock horn still sits there to look pretty). If the RSV doesn't have a loud enough exhaust to argue the laws of physics with a cager, these horn will certainly add weight to your argument.. "After you put your cell phone down, tell me this: I'm no physics major but I DO know two objects can't occupy the same space, so why were you trying to occupy the same space as my bike with your car?!"
  23. Most people will not see the damage caused to a standard windscreen that has been continuously treated with amonia or petroleum products such as pledge or RainX inside of 5 years or so. However, on a 10 year old windshield, the damage is readily apparent as you actually can see the milkyness of the plastics damaged by those products. Basically, most of us don't own our windscreens long enough to see the damage it causes, or that it is so gradual you won't notice it. But damage it will.. I work in the air industry and we went through this whole process when certain products were used on plexy windows on aircraft.. When you have a 40 yr old fleet of type, you can easily see the trend. This is why I don't pledge or RainX regular windscreens on a bike but I will on the Clearview... I know where they live ; )
  24. Hanna skidded to the north of us, you ended up with twice as much as we did I believe.. Shipping wasn't all that much, didn't cost me anything at the door.. All in All I "think" the price was roughly $225 total purchase which is quite decent considering the item cost, shipping and taxes etc.. As I mentioned earlier, i would hesitate getting the tall one for around here we get a lot of rain misty weather and no matter how much better the Clearview really is, it will still suck.. I may well order the short one or cut this one..

There's a joke why we call you guys "yanks".. best told over a beer / coffee with smiles on our faces =) I only have one more riding day before I go on my road trip so I won't be able to full test this all out but I stand by my previous assessment.. Premium gas does me gooder than reg gas does.. ; ) Wishing everyone a dry weekend.. if possible..
