fall morning, rethinking ClearView ouch
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Gees, damned if I do, damned if I don't.. Seems I won't be able to win on this one.. Trim the screen I took off the bike, scratched and hazed as it is, which wouldn't matter since I would be looking above it anyway.. sigh.. "oh well" live and learn.. -
Is the fuel you guys burning have any amount of ethanol / methanol in it? I hear what you are all saying but we're showing something quite different up here between the two types of fuel.. weird.. For the same amount of fuel in the tank, I can go further on premium fuel than regular fuel, and even when it's priced higher, it still comes out cheaper to drive that distance. We're talking about around a $1.00 difference in a tank fill up yet I can go that much further on that one dollar.. Go figure.. maybe I hve a special bike?

Many will beg to differ on whether or not higher octane fuel is more benificial or not. Several of the Venture riders out here have done their own averages and all have found that premium gas gets them better milage (thus more cost effective) than regular gas.. I found the same thing with the VStar, mind you I had a lot of engine mods on it but was able to maintain my milage all the same. Someone mentioned also about the source of your fuel.. Some distributors out here have a higher sulphur count than others and that also affects milage.. I know from the riding I've done this summer that fuel from one brand will give me the exceptional range and the fuel from another will give me shyte range.. But, everyone is different.. I only go by observation and with what works for me.. and always open to new ideas to try out.

Wow, that's some haul to work.. ouch. I found that smoooooth accelerations make a huge differences on fuel consumption. Regular oil change, spark plugs, filters AND the correct air pressure in your tires will also make a huge diff in your milage. i do know that a headwind component will also reduce milage as well..

Nope, sorry not me.. I bought mine from a Canuck who had bought it from a Yank etc.. paid about $11G CDN for it.. ; ) I might be making a run to Moncton if the storms let off.. When I get back from my photo road trip in Oct, I'll be making a late fall run up your way.. we might be able to hook up then.. ?

I do thank you for the URL though, been reading through the site most of the morning.. Cutting the windscreen seems to be in order soon.. Just hate to have that head buffetting again.. ergh.. Cheers -
How is that cheating? I did mine with one hand so I could touch the pavement with my finger to mark the centre of the turn.. ????

Put food in my mouth, not words.. I wouldn't know how to use them properly anyway ; ) No handling mods on my bike.. E3 tires, 45 lbs air rear shock is about all I have.. I just do a lot of slow riding due to the *&$&$%*@ construction zones around here.. grr. You can duck walk a mile or you can play a game for that mile and learn some skills. And people wonder why I ride at 3 am in the morning..

Ever since I purchased my 2006 Midnight this summer, I had burned Premium fuel as recommended by the previous owner and my fellow RSV riders here. The bike is a Yank bike, it's ODO is in miles but the pumps here are in Litres so on the road fuel mileage conversions suck.. lol.. However, 'on average', when I pull up to the pumps, I put 1 litre of fuel per 10 miles on the ODO.. in other words, if the ODO shows 170 miles, I'm putting in close to 17 litres of fuel into the bike. When you do the math and all, I'm getting roughly 44 mpg (Imp or US?).. And this fluctuates a bit depending if I'm doing a lot of slow speed 5th gear riding or high revs curve blasting.. Yesterday I thought to myself.. "Self, why spend more money on Premium when Reg is cheaper.. there can't be THAT much of a difference in mpg or performance, can there?" So I filled it up with Reg gas and went on a loooong run last night.. Yesterday, Reg was $1.33 / Litre and Premium $1.39 / Litre.. (and I never want to hear another yank whining about high fuel prices, come up here to do that.. over $5 a gallon here, and worse in Europe) Omg.. what a difference.. I'd never get anywhere on regular gas!! On average there was a 40 MILE difference to the range of that tank. When I went to fuel up, the bike took 17 litres but I only managed to get about 131 miles distance.. Now THAT is scary.. this was the average on two fills and two runs. On Premium fuel, I would average 40 mpg / 48 mpg (US/CDN) On Regular Fuel I would average 30 mpg / 37 mpg (US/CDN) Needless to say I can go further and spend less money to get there by running premium If my milage appears lower than norm, I'm running K&N and HD slash cut exhaust. Your milage may well differ ; )

Ok, I gave this a try last night, a beautiful night.. After a 2 hour highway run I decided to give it a try in the parking lot (less gas in tank, less top heavy, eh?!) After 5 tries I managed to get it around the 12 foot range.. 5 tries cause when you try too hard to pooch it up too easily hehe.. With a lot of brake, clutch and throttle and then with the soft gentle touch.. Stangely enough I found it easier to work it with a full tank of gas.. While I was trying to make this U-Turn from a start off.. my friend pulled a full circle inside of mine without even trying.. Ok, now THAT was impressive. No mods on his bike either. If I get time this weekend (if the trop storm misses us) I'll try it again.. determined!! =)

I lowered the noise level of my bike :)
Seaking replied to KiteSquid's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Understood about NOT doing this to the engine oil.. But you're recommending adding Honda Moly60 to the rear diff oil? Mixing it together, is this correct? (I just want to make sure I have the language down right and not make a mistake). If this is what you've recommended, how do you mix the Moly60 paste to the oil then? I'm visualizing someone taking a 1/2 teaspoon gob of Honda Moly60 and pushing it down the filler hole of his rear diff filler hole, and then adding the right amount of oil in afterwards, spinning the rear wheel to mix the whole works up.. and that's it? Again, I'm not disputing your suggestions or information, just asking to be clear.. Cheers -
Yeah.. OK so this morning was interesting riding into work with the extra tall/wide Clearview on the bike.. Don't get me wrong, it's an awesome windscreen, nice and tall, takes the wind off your face, cuts down on the buffetting and clear to view through and all.. cleans nice etc However, around here in the Maritimes we're into the weird fall weather patterns already, cold at night, hot during the day, humid as heck dawn and dusk etc.. Got out to the bike this morning and it was coated with dew which isn't a big deal.. I didn't put a cover on the bike last night.. no worries.. but when I cleaned off the windscreen it wouldn't stay 'clear'.. it would fog up right away.. ergh.. what the heck.. OK.. So I left it for a few minutes to dry off but the cold dampness in the air (clear skies, beautiful sunrise mind you) would simply wet the windshield again.. Now that's not the worse part.. Once I got it clear I was able to ride out to work but half way there, in a turn I hit a cold patch and zoom, the windshield fogged up quickly and I had no visibility at all!! I can't see over the top of the dang thing.. The only thing that saved me on this twisty road is 15 years of daily familiarity with this road and being able to see around the windshield at the curve coming up (rocky shoulders with no where to pull over).. I shudder to think if it happened with the sun in my face.. wow.. Ever go riding down the highway, especially after dusk and see your mirrors fog up? basically this is what happened this morning.. And it cleared up rather quickly after I went through that cold damp patch on the road. I'm thinking I'm not a happy camper looking through carbonates anymore.. time for some trimming or a new windshield yet again until I find something safe!! RainX on the screen, vent open or closed didn't make a difference..

Seaking replied to KiteSquid's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I'm sorry.. are you suggesting of putting a small amount of moly grease in the oil itself?! I've never heard of this before.. Either Seafoam or Amsoil synthetic oils are as exotic as I've seen or heard of for the purpose.. You'll have to tell me more about this combo.. (not calling you out on it, just never heard of it before).. Cheers -
Apart from adding 45 psi to the rear shock I have nil handling mods on the bike.. but I'll take your challenge and will give you a shout tonight after I give it a try.. if it doesn't rain.. might even video tape it.. (and submit the best results lol.. no fancy editing etc..) I wonder how many Ventures will be dropped tonight !?! lol best of luck all..

This Moly60 you refer to, it's from Honda? Is this the stuff a lot of people refer to that lubes very well and helps reducing some of the whining noise from the bike? I'll be pulling the rear off the bike this winter to grease everything up for the next season, might as well do it up proper.. What's the prefer rear gear oil? Cheers -
I can get close to that but not exactly sure what the measurement is.. I went home for lunch and came back with the bike since it's finally stopped raining for a while.. When riding around the building, I was enjoying the sound of my HD Slashers bouncing off the building and thinking of this conversation of slow riding when one of my co-workers walked past me and gave me a puzzled look.. as did the next person walking past me.. hehe.. I didn't realize it but I had slowed down to such a crawl that people were walking faster than I was rolling.. Now that's slow riding.. I swung it around the building and went to back the bike up into a parking spot.. and yeah sure enough, proud of myself for riding THAT slow.. I oops'd it on the backing up part lol.. close but enough to say it caught me.. Fun Fun

yes, you did.. go back and look again ; )
-
Just tell people you found it on the side of the road, fell of a Harley.. not too far fetched.. I'm surprised to hear people are finding these pumps so cheaply at their local HD dealerships.. The HD markup policy must be different in our city.. anything you find there with a HD logo is ridiculously marked up.. dunno why people wear or sport the logo.. to show they're rich enough to afford it?! Anyway.. Good pumps, logo or not..

Butt Butler Update on Pillow Top Seats
Seaking replied to Rick Butler's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I'm a happy owner of one of Rick's seats and enjoying every minute of it. The mods he does are excellent.. You go from fidgeting your butt looking for that perfect comfort spot on your old seat to simply parking your assets down and riding off. It truely IS that good of a mod. THAT good of a mod I have a second seat being done as well. I had a second seat done so I wouldn't lose riding time while my seat was being done ; ) Now I have a spare so my buddies can borrow it when they send their seats to get done hehe. Yes, one of THE best mods I've added to the bike since I got it this summer. It is the ONE item that made the biggest difference to my riding enjoyment. Thanks again Rick! -
The Venture is like taxiing a tail dragger aircraft (for those who have done this, you'll know what I mean).. It's easy to taxi a tail dragger but you have to be 'on it' from prop on to prop off, otherwise you'll be in for a big surprise if you let your guard down. The tail will swing around and bite you when you least expect it.. I found myself so rock steady and smooth with the Venture at slow speeds, coming to a stop at the lights, coming in soooo sloooow and putting my feet down at the last minute, it was almost like poetry in motion.. and then SNAP, it comes around and bites you and you're doing the "don't drop it, don't make it look like you're busting a blood vessel trying not to drop the bike" but everyone knows you pooched it and scrambling to recover the bike from going over too much.. and no matter what you say or try to convey with body language that everything is cool, they know.. you pooched it.. lol.. Basically, never let your guard down with the Venture.. once you get used to it, the bike is easy to handle and such but man.. JUST when you least expect it.. SNAP!

Are you on the same list as I am? lol.. Have you done Port Dover in Ontario? ANY friday the 13th.. quite impressive in 2007 as it fell in July.. apparently they do it even in the dead of winter.. (brrrrr) I've heard a lot of the Dragon Tail, sounds awesome. I did manage to get up on Mount Washington on a bright sunny day last year.. got to the top, coudln't breathe.. thought it might have been the altitude, lack of oxygen but turned out to be such an adrenelin rush and the grin on my face causing the tightiness in my chest.. and knowing I had to go back down LOLOL.. I did on my VStar.. dunno if I would do it on the Venture.. just because of it being top heavy.. that's the only reason I would hesitate.. (I said hesitate but knowing me... I'd have to try it.. at least I'd have cool battle scars on the bike hehe)

Sobering indeed.. we lost a squadron mate a few weeks back after he hit the guard rails at highway speeds.. not a pretty sight. (still not sure what caused it) Things to ponder though.. I used to get teased a lot for washing my bike too much.. "a clean bike is not a ridden bike" etc etc.. But to me, a clean bike is a bike that has been inspected, looked at, touched, felt and given a look-see. I would think a washed bike has more hands-on time than a dirty bike, thus loose items, bent, cracked items would be caught earlier, hopefully before they break at the worse possible time. I can tell that I've found a lot of stuff lose, cracked or missing on my bikes after a wash job.. In other words, folks have gotta start doing their pre-ride walk arounds more seriously than just flipping the lights and squeezing the brakes.. if they even bother doing anything at all.. Test your air pressures lately? I've got a bad record for things falling off my bike or coming loose so I check constantly.. Safety is fun.. right?

I do my own synch after I had someone show me how it's done, however you've added a lot of 'layman' version talk to the process that does indeed make it easier to follow and understand.. thanks =) The ONE thing I could add to all this is that while turning the proper screws is to NOT push on the screws while turning.. the mechanical tendency is to push into a screw while we turn it to prevent the screw driver tip from stripping it out. However, if you do this while adjusting the carb screws, you impart pressure on the screw making everything change as you are physically displacing the adjutors. (next time you guys synch your carbs, simply push on those screws without turning and you'll feel the diff.. not good) So using the proper phillips screw driver and finger tip turning pressure (no push) will give you a more accurate result.. Took me a while to figure this one out.. I thought it might have just been me and my big hands but some locals were doing the same thing without realizing it.. Just an added note.. Cheers

Unfortunately sparks are so elusive and random that most people don't enter them into the equation unless the ratio of hairs raised and underwear changes are factored in. As an experienced electrician, you should know well that to release the smoke out of an weak and expensive component doesn't require the release of it's capacity of sparks.. However, should there be sparks released prior to the smoke release, a different formula is used. The bigger the spark and the bigger the smoke, the much more expensive it is to get that smoke back in there. However, the base rule of chaos dictate that not all release of spark will release smoke. You almost have to use a flow chart for that one.. We could be here all day going through the various rules, formulas, theorems, laws, axioms and dictums of electricity... or we can go riding.. I opt for the latter.. right after I mop up all this electricity from the floor as apparently I drained my battery last night.. but I'm not seeing it.. ?!?!?! what the heck?
