Can't start my 83
Marcarl replied to Venture Capitalist's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Trying to decipher what you said, so going to ask some questions for clarification. -When you checked the battery voltage at the posts, what was the reading. - Did you check the clamp voltage at the battery. - Did you check for voltage drop at the battery when you hit the starter, or when you turned on the ignition. - Which side of the relay were you checking. The one side is hooked directly to the battery so should read the same as the battery. - Does the headlight go off when you hit the starter. - How old is the battery, and when was the last time it was charged? Enough for now. Let us know. -
Really can't fathom what you might be going through, but I would think that it might be called a disaster at best. Can't be easy to deal with all this heartbreak. Where might you look for comfort? Where can you discover healing? What happens after this, how will life be without her? I will ask The Great Shepherd for answers to those questions for you, and hopefully you'll be able to discover some answers as time go on.

87 stator/crank cover stripped screw
Marcarl replied to Max's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Seeing as you already started with Seafoam, chuck in the whole can, let it run for a minute to get the new mixture into the carbs, then let it sit for a few hours, repeat and repeat. I that don't work you need to satnd in line to get some real carb cleaner, I buy the spry stuff at wholesale so just spray a whole can into 1/4 tank of gas, once things are clean,,, if that happens, then I fill the tank. Seems to me to be a fuel issue and there could be some gumming in the carbs from sitting. If the carb cleaner don't work, you could go the HotShot method, and if that don't do it,, the carbs come out for a deep cleaning,,, they have the virus!!! If there was fuel in the bowls when it last ran,,, the deep clean might be the best solution. Where are you located? I might be of help. -

Wow Don,,, you're only a super tailgunner,, you also be a smart feller. I am really liking that idea about attending at Carl's,,, got a list ready already of tools that you should bring. I've been retired for a few years now, so any help I can get to manage my list is much appreciated. What day was it that you have planned? I'll be sure to leave the list hanging on the shop door and I will be gone far enough away to keep the social from distancing. And ohhh, the beer case is in the shop, just to the right of the door, lots of empty spaces for more bottles.

I thought this might happen, and can't blame you for your decision,,, gonna miss it though, it was always a good time. Now what am I going to do for that weekend??? Marca had it all figured out already as to how she was once again going to take over my shop... Now I might have to help her.

At this point in time, it's all a wait and see situation. For me,, I'm looking t go ahead and keep this thing in the plan,, but border restrictions, distancing restrictions, camping lodging allowances, food availability all play a part in the decision making, as well as to the number of folks who decide to come, although I think that no matter how many or few come, it would not depend greatly on numbers. I think the decision will be made around the first of July. JMT -
For some reason I had to read alllll the way through Puc's long winded story,,, turns out that it was something about fishing, and it all sounded fishy to me. can't figure out why?? in the world he would get out of the boat to get some real worms, when he has a perfect alternative right there with him. What was he thinking?? He would have been at a real loss had he got stuck out there in the middle of nowhere with no one to help him get unstuck, and that might have caused Tippy to get unmoored and would have let the floater slowly drift away to who knows where???and then who would cook supper?? with Puc stuck up to his elbows in worm fodder. Guess maybe I had better make some plans to be in attendance for at least a little bit of time to make sure Tippy is still in good hands and able to keep that old fart from doing things that might be very detrimental to the existence of her own self. Yah,, I might show up,, if I can remember that long.

Pulsating rear 87 VR
Marcarl replied to Pasta Burner's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
What might also help is t make sure the center stand is well lubed. Also, when you go to set it up, right foot on the center stand, one hand on the handle bar and one on the side rail,,, now push down on the stand using your hand on the side rail to help give he needed push, then pull back slightly on the handle bar for rearward movement encouragement. Focus needs to be on the foot that is working the stand. -

Rear cylinders hot

Then I would do a compression check, even if just to eliminate that. I would warm the engine and then pull a plug wire from the front to seeif it makes a difference, and then the one from the back to notice the difference between the two, Do that on both sides. Could be you have a restricted ignition issue. Or you might not have the carbs sitting tightly in their boots. Often we put the carbs into their boots, check to make sure they are in place, tighten them in and close er up. but they do have a tendency to pop out on occasion, then you would have false air coming in and have a lean issue. You could also check the air mixture screws, that might be a something to keep things lean as well. -

Syncing carbs has really nothing to do with whether it runs well or not,,, it only has to do with a balanced engine, for the syncing only helps you adjust the throttle plate opening, that's all. Now on the other hand, if the plates are totally closed at idle? then you might find cool pipes, but you would have discovered that when you sync'd them and you would find that it would be hard to start. Now on the re-build? Not all re-builds are rebuilt, some are just hot-shot cleaned and the only one that got soaked is the owner of the carbs. Check the ignition to make sure you have constant spark, then you might even check compression, but my guess is that it's fuel related. -
That face looks familiar!! Not a bad looking one at that,, best keep it smiling. Good the hear from you again.

These V4 will seem to run just fine on only 3 cyl, so maybe you are running 2and 2 halfs? Make sure to get the temp from the same area, distance from the heads, to get an accurate reading. Seems like you might be a bit short on fuel in the front 2, run some carb cleaner through the system, just use a 1/4 tank and a heavy dose, run and let it sit for a time and then do it again. Worst come to worst, you might have a deep cleaning job to do. Bike doesn't have a lot of miles for it's year, so it probably sat a lot, which could mean plugged carbs, but cleaner might do it. -
Thanks for the vid Patch,, good to listen too.

Sure!!! now you are in your corner,,, you know how dangerous that is for the rest of us??? Me??? I'm going to be very careful.. yes sireee! To answer some questions: First on what was deleted. I didn't want to delete the whole thread, it's too good to dump in the garbage. I've been enjoying it immensely. So I though I would just go and delete some posts and then be done with it,,,,,it turns out> not so fast young fella,,, you need to read them all again, and then decide, up or down, annnnd then what would it do to the conversation going on,,does it leave a hole, a blind spot,,,well then I run into another load of comments and the reference goes back to something that just got the hevho,,, another decision,,, decisions, decisions. Yep not easy going through a thread and pickin and chosin, no wonder whole threads get dumped. So now you have a bit of an insight. Second: Some comments as to why religious comments are sometimes left to live, but not politics. Ohh that's a hard one, don't know if I have the answer, but I might try. In politics there is often a difference of opinion and we think we are always right and so want to stand our ground, I think because it generally involves our physical well-being or maybe even our morals. Not a bad thing really,, it's good to have an opinion and stick with it,,, problem comes in when the bashing starts and bad feelings are generated. You know the score, it goes from bad to worse. Religious comments on the other hand have more to do with our love for one another, we mostly are trying to help each other, so often these might be left to live. Religious threads though, would be a different story altogether, for then some could really get riled up and nasty, hence we want to stay away from them as well. After all, we are all religious, some in a higher or other being, and some in themselves, and before this goes out of bounds (I could go on for a bit yet) I will rest it here. Don't know if this helped at all,, I might have to delete this as well. Back to my corner,,,, on the other side of the room.

I was only out of work once, and then I was only 16,,, not a good feeling at all. It's like you're not wanted anymore, and we all have a desire to be needed. It's about the same when it's time to tell somebody they are no longer needed in your employ,, very difficult time for both. So, set aside those feelings if you have them and focus on what you can do to make a difference somewhere, somehow, no matter how little it may seem. One of the little things would be to keep us posted as to what you have been up to, a bit of a diary of sorts. That way we can encourage you as well. Blessings, Fool,,, for you ain't no fool!!
