TCI Problems
Dragonslayer replied to Dragonslayer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yes I did, the bike harness end. -
Not realizing a smooth running acceration and decent Gas mileage since installing the new programmable TCI I decide to plug the old TCI back in and compare the performance between the old and the new. 1st I just plugged the old TCI in with the new map sensor still hooked up with vacumn tube to the #1 Intake boot port but electrically not hooked up. Leaving the tank cover off, I go for test ride to auto parts store. It seemed to run about the same as the new programmable TCI. So I'm thinking the problem is not related to the TCI Old or New. But as I was leaving the auto parts store the bike began backfiring, bogging down then shut off and would not recrank.WTF:confused24: So, I'm sitting on the side of the road for about thirty minutes scratching my head, trying to get the bike to crank and worrying about a two mile up hill push home. Then I noticed the orange wire on the 6 pin plug to TCI is hanging 1/2 way out of the plastic plug. I push in all the way in and the bike cranks. So then I get on the highway to run the bike at highway speeds for a few exits and back. On the xway it runs about the same as the new TCI maybe a little better. But, before I could get back home on three occassions while at a traffic light the bike starts bogging down again and backfiring. After wiggling wires it straightens out. When I get home I wire in the leads to the old TPS into the new 8 pin plug so I can switch back and forth from the old TCI/TPS configuration to the new TCI/MAP Sensor configuration and unplug tube from Map sensor to intake boot and hook up tube from TPS to port. While doing this I notice that the pins inside both the 8 pin plug and the six pin plug are not all bottomed out indicating that the pins are not securely locked inside the new plastic plugs. I'm thinking INTERMITTEN WIRE CONNECTION FAILURE WITHIN THE QUICK CONNECT PLUGS On several occassions since I've owned the bike over the past 10 years poor performance and gas mileage has been traced back to bad electrical connections of the quick connect plugs to the TCI. Numerous other problems resulted from bad connections in multiple other quick connect plugs. I just dont trust quick connect plugs anymore. So, I took some small needle nose pliers and make sure all of the wires are pushed in all the way on the TCI plugs and take a ride around the neighborhood. The acceration was quicker and more responsive than I ever remember it being and the bike litterly flies. Next I'm going to take a longer test ride on xway to see if my theory holds up and the gas mileage improves.

In doing this I think I discovered something important today which might explain everything. I'm going to start a new thread called "TCI Problems" to refresh the discussion on the subject.

Today I noticed the tach drop couple of times at around 3800 rpm. I was beginning to think that all of the symptoms were showing up between 4000 and 5000 rpm but this does not seem to be completely accurate. On hard acceleration there is a big hesitation before it takes off. but when it does it flies. I'm wondering if the rest of you with the same symptoms are getting lousey fuel consumption as well? I'm averageing around 27 mpg. mostly hyw at 55 to 70 mph and about 25% in town 35 to 45mph.

Yea why didn't someone mention the hammer thing earlier. -
I wanted to wait and eliminate any other possible issues before I started trying to tweak the TCI. But, I'm on my 5th tank of gas since the launch of TCI and the performance or gas mileage is not improving. I'm getting about 100 miles per tank and jerky/surging hard acceleration like George S says slow low speed accerlation is OK. As well as the tach/engine drop out at about 4200 rpm intermittenly.

It did it again this morning on the way to work, twice right at 4200 rpm.

Sorry, I rode with a friend of mine a few months ago that rides a HD Road KING police type bike every where we stopped the Venture got all of the attention and no one commented on his bike at all. He noticed it and it pissed him off.
-
Been there done that. I was on my way to hunt him and he attacked first I was going about 70 mph him no so fast.

I've got one that came off a parts bike that is availlable. It is black but I think was originally burgundy and painted black with a rattle can. However, it does have a sticker on it that says WHO'S YOUR DADDY, is that a problem?

Starter Clutch Removal
Dragonslayer replied to kevin5549's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Warning, Warning Warning If you use a Harmonic Balancer puller make sure you use the Beveled shape adapter on the tighten shaft or you will damage the the inside threads on the shaft that the flywheel bolt screws into. The reason I know this is "Been there done that" Then you will need a 12mm x 1.25 pitch tap that you will have to order off the internet to repair the threads. -
As a matter of fact I did notice several times, for just a split second the tach did drop out and then bounced right back. On one of those occassions it seemed the engine cut off at the same time for just a split second.

Sunday after getting the brakes blead, exhaust leak/backfire problem fixed and the rest of the body parts back on it was time to take her out on the road to see how she would do with the new Programmable TCI. So I called and arranged a hook up with RandyR in Dahlonga for the Bear On the Square Festival. (about a 75 mile one way trip) She deffinately had a lot more acceration in all ranges but it was not a smooth acceration. It felt as if the bike was surging or lunging forward as it was cruising and accerating with a jerky reaction. When I would gun it, it the would increase RPM but it felt like the clutch was slipping a little and would have to catch up with the the engine to take off. The gas consumption was rapid. Since the bike had been sitting for about a year with an empty tank and the new gas in that first tank and was mixed about 3 gal of gas to 1/2 can of seafoam I'm not discounting the possibility of some moisture in the tank and fuel system. I'm thinking I need to run a few tank full of gas to see if it improves. While in Dahlonga we did hook up Randy's carb tune and the carb sync was pretty close to where it should be. The second tank of gas without sea foam got 94 miles to 3.699 gallons of gas. Monday ride to work and back (20 miles each way was a little better but not 100%. Now on the third tank. My next steps are to replace in lin fuel filter and fresh fluid and blead on the clutch line. Any other ideas.

2nd test ride... new problem
Dragonslayer replied to Dragonslayer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Must have cause it seems to have gone away with the help of a little foil tape on the exhaust header for thickness and a minor adaptation on the clamp which allowed me to tighten it a little more.- 5 replies

2nd test ride... new problem
Dragonslayer replied to Dragonslayer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I said 3 & 4 because it seems to be backfiring from the right side (as your sitting on it) exhaust. That is also the side there is a possiblity of a loose exhaust pipe connection where the muffler connects with the exhaust header.- 5 replies

First test ride after......
Dragonslayer replied to Dragonslayer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
any other helpful hints on getting the the brakes blead -
I took my first test ride today after doing this years round of repairs, up grades and modifications. New Dunlop E-3's front and back thanks to Two brothers Motorcycle tires in Lawrenceville Ga. New Starter clutch Thanks to Dano New programable TCI Thanks to Dingy New HO Stator from Rick at Buckeye Performance Getting it cranked due to the suggestion from 09RSTD to turn the petcock on. The bike runs good but the brakes are a little spongee and un responsive. I forgot how much of a PITA bleeding the brakes are. The front brake fluid resevoir screws stripped, had to drill out, trip to Lowe's for 2 4mm x .7 beveled head screws. Going back out there for some more pump, pump, bleed, pump, pump, bleed, pump, pump, bleed, fill, fill, pump, pump, bleed, pump, pump, ble................................................Arrrrrg again
