  1. Greetings. Can anybody tell me where the idle mixture screws are located on the 28mm Mikuni carbs (1998 Tour Classic)? Just cant seem to find these little buggers. I am having the exhaust popping and would really like to get rid of it. Have already run through a full tank of new fuel with cleaning additives (carb and injector cleaner) and it still pops. No holes in or around the Y pipe weld and all exhaust gaskets seem to seal perfectly. I plan to install the Dyna 3000 module in the near future but not at the moment. Any help or/and advice would be very much apreciated.
  2. I got my 2000 MM RSV all back together after replacing the fuel filter, bumping the carburetor jets up one step, opening up the air box openings, replacing the air filters with K & N, and replacing the intake manifolds. I even have the carbs all pulling together.. Man, you wouldn't believe how far out of sync they were. #1 and #2 were out just a bit and #3 and #4 were out a bit more but the difference between the two sets compared to each other was unbelievable !!!! I set the idle rpm to what felt right (no tack) then started tweaking. Got 1 & 2 in sync then 3&4. Had to drop the idle just a tad. When I started adjusting the sided to side sync the idle went through the roof.... I bet that sucker jumped 1000 rpm. Brought it back to earth then tweaked back and forth until all four were pulling the same. Now I anxious to go see what a difference this makes in performance. That will have to wait. I have lots more to do. I'm in the middle of the "Winter Tinker Time"..... :hurts: Folks if you haven't already become good friends with the tech pages - do so before starting any projects. Thank you so much for all the GREAT tips !!!!! If I hadn't looked at the carb sync tip I'd have been there for hours trying to figure out why things weren't working. I'm surprised Yamaha didn't catch that mistake in their shop manual...
  3. Talking about myself here! The weather in Florida the last few days has been colder than usual. Since the RSTD is kept in the garage over night, I had to use the choke the other morning to get the bike started. After a few minutes of high idle, I pushed the choke in A LITTLE to slow it down. Got on the helmet, climbed on board, and set off for a short trip to the next town for a Dr. visit. I immediately noticed that the bike was not running "right". It was a little sluggish and idled slow. In fact, it even stalled at a traffic light. I thought that maybe the idle had gotten turned down too far somehow so, when I got to my appointment, I turned it up a bit. On my return home, it was still not right. I stopped at a gas station and filled the tank, thinking maybe I got some bad fuel. I started the bike and, for reasons I can't explain, I leaned over and checked the choke knob. IT WAS STILL OUT! No wonder it was running like crap. O.K. you cold weather residents, stop laughing!
  4. I AM STILL LOOKING FOR CROME PEICE 99 ROYAL STAR VENTURE RIGHT SIDE BELOW GAS TANK TWO SCREWS IN IT ALSO GOES AROUND SCREW TO SET YOUR IDLE CAN ANY ONE KNOW WHERE I CAN GET ONE I ASK ABOUT GETTING IT RECROME THAY SAY CHEAPER TO GET ANOUTHER ONE THANKS TOMTOM7:whistling:
  5. Hi everyone. I am in Ft. Worth bedded down for the night. The bike has run great both days. Been getting 43mpg today while running 80-85. No leaks, no squeaks, and just a rattle or two. The old girl really runs well. I do see a bit of dampness on the outside of the right carbs. Been there a while. Also, Todd the tick I heard has to be an errant spark at idle. I can correlate the erratic idle to the tick. The Corbin seat and backrest were worth the extra trouble. I believe BlackJack was right. The other bike was just a small stop on the way to getting the bike that was really calling me. See some of you tomorrow at the show. And see the South Texas gang when I get home. I want to plan a meet and eat someplace between all of us in a couple weeks. Notice the two somewhat cold but excellent looking 1st Gens. Wonder who they belong to? J. B.
  6. Well Jeff, here I am again..While I had the carbs out of Bertha, I took the opportunity to do some preventative maintenance I had been putting off. I replace the leaking valve cover gaskets and I had found a coolant hose collapsed. Also, it was time for new antifreeze. Carb. cleaning was uneventful after the screws were finally removed. Reassembly went reasonabley well, however it took me a long time to get the control cables hooked back up. Anyway, all is back together and I cannot get the bike to idle below 2500 to 3000 rpm. Is this a TCI problem? The bike ran a little ragged for about 10 miles, number two cylinder was cutting in and out, running rich and then spark knocking . Then the engine seemed to run better. Up jumped the idle. I have backed off the idle screw again and again to 1000 rpm, yet the idle rpm jumps back up after a short ride. I can find no hoses off anywhere. Have you had this problem before? Any ideas...anyone
  7. I have a 97 royal star classic with 35000 miles on it. I have had it for 2 weeks and have put over 1000 miles on it. I upgraded from a v-star 650. I love the ride and have learned so much from the site. It appears to be missing or vibrating on a moderate throttle (I have been at 50mph in 3rd, 70 in 4th and still notice it). It is noticible when giving throttle from an idle while in neutral also) I have put two sets of plugs in, synced the carbs (to the best of my abilities), checked the resistance on the plug caps(all about 10k and have just ordered new ones based on info from this site as I am getting some ignition noise when listening to the radio on the head set). When I increase the throttle through mid range, it appears to be missing. I have ran a can of seafoam through it. I have adjusted the idle mixture screws. I removed the air cleaner cover and moved the slides back and let them go. The slides for cyl 1&2 return slowly, the slides for 3&4 come back much quicker. I have not pulled the the diaphagms to check for holes. At cruising speeds (high rpms) it seems to run fine. At an Idle. all cycinders are fireing and all plugs appear to be burning clean. Would the shimming of the slides help this? I was reading several posts that were discouraging. Comment about not doing anything to this model year and instead selling it to get a 2002 or newer. Is this the case for this bike? I am not looking for a dragster, just a comfortable dependable ride. I know I am rambeling. any helpful hints would be appreciated.
  8. Idle hands while waiting for the parade to start!
  9. ok well i have my carbs synched now and i've adjusted the idle but the bike is still getting poor MPG and still seems to have a lower top speed. is thier any way to lean out the Air fuel mixture? or is that what the idle screw does?
  10. Does anyone have or can they take a better pic of the idle adjust screw on the first gen so I can adjust my idle before i sync my carbs. the tech library has a very fuzzy close up pic of it but I cant realy tell where its located any help is much appreciated as I realy need to get my my mpg and hop up to where its supposed to be. as it turns out when i was trying adjust my idle before my budy got the idle up by turning up all the sync screws so my bike is running all kinds of wierd
  11. Anyone have a coil go bad on them? I got some bad gas a week or so ago right after I sea foamed her. Erratic idle and ran like crap. Filled up with good gas and cleaned the carbs real good. Idle smoothed out, but when I get on it, or under load, it just doesn't feel like the power is what it was before. Oh yeah, changed the plugs too. I hit the cruise the other morning and got the 5 blink code on my cruise control lights. I have also been riding in quite a bit of rain with this Texas monsoon going on. Anyone have any ideas or have had the same problem?
  12. Where is the idle speed adjustment on a first gen?
  13. Ok so here is an interesting question, I have an 84 venture royale I had it sitting idling and the voltage guage kept going a lil lower then the engine stalled out. the bike was running for a bit I was trying to work the cob webs out from not running for so long. my question is does the stator on the venture not put out alot of power at a low idle? I think it does idle a lil low so I was thinking it might not be putting out enough power unless I raise the idle. when I rolled on the throttle the power came up so it was produceing enough power if i was riding it. is this common for the venture or is my idle just set too low?
  14. What are the basic settings for my carbs. I have heard that there are starter settings on the sync screws and idle screws.
  15. I have been using Motion Pro carb stick for several years and had no trouble syncing the carbs. The last two times I ha ve tried to sync the carbs I could not even get close. Today the mercury was sucked up into the carbs twice at idle. Have sprayed the carb boots with WD40 and it didn't make any difference in idle. Anyone have andy ideas. Also I replace all sparkplugs. Gene Weir:confused24:
  16. Just curious what kind of Hg readings people get with the carbtune on 1st Gen bikes. I rebuilt my carbs new all new diaphrams all jets cleaned out (Had a idle problem had to keep bike on full choke to idle the tiny purge jets were clogged) I can idle with no choke now but I if I give it throttle it dies. Not very high readings on the carbtune almost non-existant except for #2 any ideas? Gonna try colortune first I guess.
