  1. For awhile now I have been thinking about suggesting another Asheville, but like an extended M&E. This is not to compete with Vogal as I would love to get together like we did last year, except in mid June, which would be about two months before Vogal. We could make it even less planned out, camping, eating on the run or do the breakfast bashes and maybe even an afternoon hotdog feasting. If anyone wanted to go to Biltmore or another specific destination, it could be arranged, but not worry about making it a formal day outting. For those of that did or did not make Asheville last year, it was an alternative to Vogal as Lew and Charlene were not going to be available and we still wanted a south east get together. I believe about everybody that showed up had a pretty good time. I would not mind making the same KOA campground the meeting point as it worked out great for us and I did feel they did appreciate us being there. But, if we wanted to do this we could consider other options and a different campground. Anyway, just trying to get thru some PMS with the temps being 25 degrees below normal and dreaming about next summer. What do you all think? RandyA
  2. Asheville meet in 2 weeks. I guess I better clean up a scoot.
  3. Went fo a good long day ride today and pulled into a station to fill up. As I was coming up to the station, I looked up at the markee and the price for reg was $3.11. That was better than I had been paying so I was happy. When I stuck my debit card in, I noticed reg was $2.98. I looked up on the markee again and it was now $2.98. Later on in the evening on the way back, I looked at the same markee again and it was now $2.82. That's nineteen cents in one day with at least two changes. Sure glad I did not buy a bunch of gas futures. Anyone want to make a guess where it will bottom at? I seen on gasbuddy.com where it was $2.39 in Oklahoma. I filled up in Asheville, NC at $3.11 and in the next block it was $3.79. We saw several stations in Asheville at $3.60 and up. RandyA

  6. Ok this is for the folks who wanted t-shirts from the Asheville event. I'm gonna put in another order for anyone who wants one. Not sure how much this batch will be since I don't know how many will order, so that part I'll have to let you know after I get the numbers in. I need at least 6 per shirt if not it'll be a bit more then they were last time. Let me know who wants one or two. Still have the choice of pocket or no pocket. This is the link to the last time I ordered them so you can see the shirts if you need your memory refreshed. Their will be no writing on the front I changed that but can't find the pic of that one. I'll give this till sun or monday. Then I'll get back to those who order with the prices. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=25173 Margaret

  8. After finding out the police are useless, (sorry,Tim) I looked on line and figured out each place the little perp went. Got addresses and phone numbers of the businesses and called each of them. (all 6). I was polite, at first. Then I asked them there policy on I.D. check for a credit card. I was as polite as I could be as I told them about their upcoming loss on Visa. Wal-Mart Corporate is taking my suggestion further. I should be hearing from them. At least, I was made to feel like a customer with a valid problem. Don't get me started on the police depts, locally and in Asheville, Buncombe and Grantham counties. Asheville receptionist wanted to know the addresses of the crime. I said I wasn't following the thief at the time.
  9. My pics from Asheville. I only have a little over 400. Didn't get names on all of them yet. http://s7.photobucket.com/albums/y262/venturerider/Mini-muffin%20Asheville%20Aug%202008/ Margaret

  11. I made it home from Brad's yesterday and it was a great trip. We crossed over into Canada that night and had dinner with GaryN. Left early the next morning and headed to Asheville. The bike did well except backfireing, so Muffinman helped resync and we could not get any vacum on #1 cylinder. He did get it set prety good and it ran great comeing home. Want to thank him and Brad and Denden for the work they put into it. Denden came over the week before and helped Brad work on the carbs, so a big thanks to them for taking the time out to help. And thanks to jrichard for getting in there as well. It was great to see some of the folks at Asheville, sorry I was busy with the bike and didn't get to visit much. Wish I could have stayed. Got some work to do on the 86 and need to figure out the loss of vaccum on #1. If anyone can lead me in the right direction please chim in.
  12. If you don't now me it is my fault. In 07 I purchased an 83 VR "Blondie" from an Ebay seller. The desire for a motorcycle finally won and after over 25 years I was again on two wheels - almost! The 83 needed a lot of tlc and just plain was road worthy. That's where Venturerider.org enters the picture. Through the fine postings of many of you, I begin to get the hang of my "new" ride. The one thing that was slowing me down was the braking system, actually it wasn't slowing me down! In what I thought would be a last result I found a member that lived close by and asked for help. This is how I came to know Ranya (Randy). He came to rhe house one fine Saturday on that purple beauty bringing not only parts and knowledge but friendship My wife and I could hardly believe that a stranger would give so freely of their time and talent. After a few hours my ride had brakes and more! Working through other problems it is now road worthy and is proving to be a great amount of fun and enjoyment. While the bie can stand for itself, part of the real enjoyment has come from this community we call Venturerider.org. Even though I did not ride my bikw to Asheville, upon arrival for dinner, I was made to feel "right at home". I can not rmember each and every persons name I met, but I do now this. Each on acted as if they had known me for years. Each on never teased me about caging to the event. What a great time I had! Even got to watch a stator replacement, in the dark and dirt. For those of you lie me that lurk and do not post, find a member close by and go meet them. You might just meet a new friend like I did! Thans to all of you at Asheville and to all of you here in the forum, your help and encouragement have made my renewed intrest in motorcycling an easy "comeback". Each of you ride easy and safely, my address and phone is posted on my profile, the door is open and the welcome mat is out. Steve Neal 83' VR - she may be an old blonde but she still has fun!
  13. The gift that keeps on giving. We left WV on Monday riding the 89 towing our trailer. The first fuel stop was 120 miles down the road. I noticed some clutch problems only half a lever of clutch and not completly disengaging when stopping. By the time we got into Tennessee the heat index was 100 and the fan was running continously as the temp guage stayed just below the red. Getting off at the pigeon forge exit I totally lost the clutch lever ( no pressure as I squeezed it). MamaMo enjoyed coming to a stop at the exit using the kill switch. We managed to get into the visitors center and let the bike cool down for 30 minutes until I got some lever back. We made it to our rental in Sevierville and I called Jeff. I told him I had some discoloration in the clutch site glass. He said he had seen a hose problem do that same thing and he would bring one to Asheville. We could change and flush it there. We rode around Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg the next day shopping and I was good for about 5 mile or 10 stoplights before problems. I picked up some brake fluid and decided to flush it myself. Thats when I noticed my smallest wrench a 8mm was to big for the bleeder. I called jeff who was now at Asheville and he offered to ride the 90 miles bring the hose and fix it. He made it by 8:45 pm we change hose and flushed the system. Jeff rode back to Asheville that night. The next morning we pulled MamaMo and the trailer up over the smokeys 6000 ft elevation and down to Cherokee,Maggie Valley, and on in to Asheville. The clutch worked like new. At the campground Jeff was non stop tweaking and fixing first gens. I noticed some second genners waiting for a touch from the venture doctor. Many thanks to a guy that keeps on giving.
  14. There is Couple Pic's From Asheville more to come
  15. I am still getting info on those coming to Asheville. If you can get it to me by 2pm today, I will still be able to add it. Send it to rsatkins@comcast.net. 16. I have read about some success in reintroducing ELK to the Great Smoky Mountains in East Tennessee. So have you ever seen and where is the best locations for viewing them? I'll be browsing around that area before Asheville.
  17. Confession is good for the soul, so …(coming out of lurk mode to share) My wife and I just returned from our annual trip on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This trip was 6 days and 5 nights on the parkway, staying at the Pisgah Inn and Bluffs Lodge. We live about 125 miles from the parkway, so this trip was about 550 miles of parkway riding, not including detours, from the southern end in Cherokee, NC, to Rocky Knob in Virginia. I especially enjoy the southern, mountainous section from Cherokee to Asheville. I don’t know about those of you who have ridden the parkway, but after 5 days and 500 miles of twisties, I’m also happy to get off that road and ride some straight lines for a change. For those of you that do not know me, my 2000 model Yamaha Venture (the Albino Rhino) and I have shared more than 100k miles of roads over the past 8 years. To say that I am familiar with the Rhino is an understatement. Mistakes, I made a few… For me, bike condition and safety are always supreme. Good tires are a must, especially before beginning a road trip. The rear tire, an Avon, only has 4k on it—good to go. The front tire, a Metzler 880, has 10k on it and is at minimums (a surprise as I normally get much better mileage from the front 880), but this is only a short trip and I have no time to mount a new tire, so I decide to go with it. The first day is 190 miles to the Pisgah Inn (mile post 408.6), where we spend the night. This segment includes 60 miles of that glorious mountainous portion of the parkway, including the high point of the parkway, and the day is fine. The next day we travel to Bluffs Lodge at MP 241, where we will spend the next 3 nights. The first detour traveling north puts us off the parkway in Asheville. The official detour goes east on I-40, to US 221 north, to SR 226 north, then back to the parkway. I don’t like this route and choose to get off I-40 in Old Fort and take US 70 east to SR 80 and go north to the parkway. While enjoying twisty SR 80 I misjudge a mild right-hand curve and go wide into the opposing lane. Fortunately, there is no traffic for a close encounter. (whew!) Three days later, I realize that I did not misjudge the curve; I, for just the briefest of moments, stopped piloting the bike and missed setting up the proper entry. Later that day as I am putting the Rhino to bed (covering the bike), I notice the front tire, with only 350 additional miles on it since leaving the house, is getting real thin left and right of center. So, the next morning, Wednesday, a no ride day (!), I call the dealer I buy tires from and ask him to order an Avon for the front and make arrangements to stop by his business on the way home at trip’s end to have it installed. The remainder of the day is spent relaxing and hiking some local trails. Thursday we ride 70 miles north on the parkway to check out the Rocky Knob cabins, built in 1936, for next year’s accommodations. Friday morning we depart Bluffs lodge traveling south for another night at the Pisgah Inn. Again we endure the two detours between Bluffs Lodge and Asheville, and just before getting back onto the parkway at Asheville, I get fuel. While fueling, we see that rain is close upon us, so we don our water repellant garments before continuing south. A small thunderstorm rolls over us while traversing the parkway around the Asheville area. We are out of the heavy rain after only a few miles, and a few miles further on, we stop at an overlook to wipe off the windshield and face shields. Shortly after continuing on, and only about 20 miles from our destination, I again go wide in a right-hand curve. This time there is opposing traffic. Fortunately, the driver is alert and brakes and gives me room to get back to my side of the road. Again, I had momentarily stopped piloting the bike and lost control. TARGET FIXATION. We learn about this in our riding classes. During my two departures of controlled riding, when I realized I was drifting wide, I fixated on the center line, and consequently crossed into the other lane. Needless to say, I was not happy with my performance, and I was especially unhappy about putting my wife’s life in jeopardy. (Let the fool kill himself, no others.) Immediately after my second excursion, I did not know what had caused me to cross the center line. It was only afterward, when my mind had time to replay, many times, the event as it unfolded, did I understand that I had stopped riding the bike—my mind was completely focused on something else for just a brief instant in time. Another aspect factors into the successful recoveries from my lane departures. I have become very conservative with speed when riding twisty roads; I am well inside the performance envelop and have maneuvering room while in a curve. Had I been traveling at a safe but faster speed in these curves the outcome mostly likely would have been ugly. Devine intervention … Remember that front tire? As arranged, we stopped this afternoon to have the new tire installed. I had considered waiting until Thursday (my day off) to do it, but decided to get it done today. While waiting for the tire change, we tested a Goldwing trike, but that is another story. After the test ride, the owner came up to me and showed me the valve stem that had been removed from the wheel. As I’m looking at it (not seeing anything wrong with it), he takes it back and says to me, “it’s a good thing you didn’t check the air in your tires this morning.” Having said that, he easily slides the brass core of the valve stem from its rubber housing! He hands it back to me and the ease in which the brass core slides out flabbergasts me. The thing is, I did check the air in my tires this morning! Ronnie, the owner, explained that he had started to remove the valve core (Schrader valve) from the stem and heard air escaping, so he pulled on the stem an the brass core pulled out with virtually no resistance. Today we rode 185 miles to get to Ronnie’s: twisty roads and highway speeds up to 70 mph. As best as I can recall, this is the original valve stem: 103,000 miles on it. I recommend that you change yours more often.
  18. By now most of you know the Lewis and Charlene are taking a well deserved break next year. I think they've earned a break, these events are stressful to put together plus the fact that Charlene got hurt this year was tough on Lewis. So Jeff and I decided to put something together for a replacement for next year. Now I need to know how many are interested in going. I'll have to start making some of the arrangements now. We are going to have it in Asheville NC. I'm planning on setting it up through Asheville East KOA. These are the breakdowns price wise for staying: RV sites $25 - $35, Tent sites $22 - $29, Kabins $30 - $70, Kottage-Lodge $90 - $125 They have the kottage lodges with bathrooms. All the kabins and kottages have ac. They have wifi as well as data ports available. If I set this up through KOA they recommend you start large gathering plans about a year in advance. So if you all would let me know if you're interested I can get started. I've already checked out stuff to do in the area, and ladies you'll like the fact that they have a craft place where you can buy the stuff they make. Not sure what exactly we'll do when we get there it's still in the early stages of planning. I'm not planning a ride to the dragon, but I'm sure if you want to go someone would be willing to get you there. Here's a link to the website to give you an idea of what it's like there. http://www.koa.com/where/nc/33116/facilities/ I've been to this KOA and they are very biker friendly. So let me know what you all think. Margaret
  19. I didn't want to wait too long I know lots of folks need to get their dates in for vacations by the beginning of the year. So here it goes: August 6 thru 10th of 2008 will be the date for the Asheville event. That was the date that got the most votes and a few said either was good. I have heard from some that they'd like to go to the Biltmore house I know they have group rates, but you have to call. So this week I'll call and find out what that would be. I know one of our members was involved with a car group that went so I may tap him for help on this. I'm figuring maybe that friday would be the best day for this. I know with all the events it's hard to choose, at least this way you have advanced knowledge on when this will be. I'll post with any other details as time goes on. I'm going to ask the advice of others who have organized events like this. This is the first time I'll be organizing something so big, just hope I can give you all a good time. If you're interested in checking out what's at the Biltmore here's their web address: http://www.biltmore.com/visit/default.asp Margaret
