  1. I am slowly getting this thing up and running. 86 VR 21000 miles. Does not leak when off or with key in on position. Shortly after I start the bike, gas starts running down the front coil of the rear shock and pukes out on the ground. I have pulled the fuel pump and tried to trace back all the gaslines I can see. Looks like it's leaking from above the rear shock mount and down the front of the shock? Cant see the actual leak. The PO left the tank on reserve and I have not moved it. I drained all the gas at the fuel pump and put a bit in today to get the bike running. Thanks for any suggestions.
  2. OK, I looked through the archives and couldn't find anything specific to the E2 error on the CLASS system. Here is the scenario, bike is a '89 with about 75k miles and tons of service records since new: When airing up the rear shock using the automatic setting of the CLASS, the pressure never gets above 35 psi for the rear shock. At about this range the pressure stops rising and the controller goes to E2 and cycles after 5 seconds to reset. E2 error code indicates that the controller does not detect a rise in pressure with the compressor running. The compressor runs and sounds relatively healthy, I really don't have a reference to compare. Here is what I have done so far: Re-soldered the CLASS controller, didn't find any broken solder joints, but re-soldered anyway Serviced the desiccant, found it to be pink in color, heated in the microwave until dark blue, checked the filters and replaced the O-rings in the container and lines Found the air intake filter almost disintegrated, disconnected the airlines and forced the compressor to run, replaced all the O-rings, cut a new air intake filter and re-installed Checked the valve block and pressure sensor, disconnected the air hoses and cleared the passages with the compressor Check all electrical connection, disconnected, cleaned and greased connection, checked for battery voltage at compressor Checked for pinched air hoses to the rear shock, disconnected hoses and manually inflated shock. The funny thing is that I can manually block the air fitting for the rear shock at the valve block and the pressure will rise up to 71 psi without any problems. I tried airing the rear shock up using the manual feature and if I let the compressor just run for a few seconds the pressure will ultimately begin rising. I can even get the rear shock up to 85 psi this way. But with the automatic function the pressure will not go past 35 psi with timing out into E2. Has anybody encountered this before? I know the air suspension on these bikes is touchy, but it drives me nuts. Two-up I really like running 71-75 psi in the rear, running this solo almost breaks my already damaged back. Has anybody a know good compressor and valve block laying around to verify that the problem is in this area? Thanks in advance for all your comments, Klaus
  3. Im in the procees of lower my front end and have followed the steps listed here ( i thought) but does the front air shock air valve suppost to be below the triple tree??? see photos
  4. Going to go for an aftermarket rear progressive shock for my 83', wondering where to get one or a part number and help would be great.
  5. I replaced the front springs with progressives and now need to do something with the rear. I ride very aggressively and now the rear end wallows. I don't want to have to remove the class [it's all the class i have left] like I did on the front. after reading some of the other threads I see that I can replace just the spring since there are no air or fluid leaks is the shock rebuildable? how does the remote dampening work is there anything there that needs maintenance? Am I just being stubborn about keeping the air? There's no way I'm going to adjust the progressive with a spanner more than 1x a year is the loss of adjustability going to make a big differance between single\double baggage\empty. ride quality is important but handling is first. THANX:Venture:
  6. Hi all. I read the threads about bottoming forks. My question is, this did not happen until I had the shop put new seals in. A local person tells me there is a part inside the fork, that if it is upside down, it will limit the shock travel. Anyone know if there is any truth to this. Thanks. Another question? Do the forks need to be bled? I put the oil in after the forks were on the bike.
  7. I have a 93 venture royale in need of a new rear shock progressive tells me I have to remove the CLASS and remote rebound dampening systems. I sacraficed the CLASS lines to the front forks and don't regrett it at all. but the rear is another story I could be 2 up luggage or solo and carvin' corners. is there an aftermarket upgrade or should I stick with a N.O.S. shock? any comments welcome. THANX
  8. I have an 83 Venture std on which the rear shock has died, the bike has over 100k on it, & cosmetically not in the best of shape (still runs great), & I'm having a REALLY hard time spending 500 bucks on a shock for a bike that probably isn't worth much more than that. In my perusing the internet, I've noticed that in a couple of parts listings, replacement shocks for this bike share the same part number as the replacement shock for an 99-06 V-Star 1100. This lead me to thinking about finding a used shock for a V-Star, as I would have a LOT more faith in a used shock for a 5 year old bike, than spending the same amount of money on a 26 year old shock (I've bought several off of eBay, all bad). In comparing the two shocks, the V-Star shock has a clevis on the bottom, whereas the Venture shock has eyes at both ends. I guess what I'm asking for in my rather long-winded way, has anybody heard of using a V-Star shock on the 1st gen Ventures, & if so what modifications did they have to do? Thanks in advance, Wynn
  9. Hey guys, Does anyone know where there is a 1300 rear shock for a Venture Royale? I'm helping a friend out with a 83 standard and I had forgotten how bad these rear shocks are. It's my suggestion that he replace it with a coilover off a Royale. Any ideas, Rick
  10. Hi gang. Is it possible to remove the rear shock and the fender will not hit the tire? so It can be put on a lift and carted off to my dealer for my trike conversion? I was wondering if removing the rear shock would cause any problems , A person that owns a second gen needs a shock pretty soon. otherwise he has to wait until about the 2nd week of March. If I can remove it, what is the procedure on doing that? Almost looks as if I would have to remove the Tire.. ummmm maybe I otta let them remove it. *lol* My Poor Bike is almost NAKED NOW *sigh* Basically I was wondering if it was a BIG deal or not. Thanks, Jeff
  11. I am currently looking to get a new shock for my bike and am wondering if anyone who just converted to trike would have a shock up for sale? would appreciate any response.
  12. I've seen posts that say " if the wind deflectors aren't touching the shock, the brackets will break". How do I adjust them??? On the right side, I can put my finger between the rubber bumper and the shock. The left is closer...but not touching. Thanks again. you folks are the BEST!!!

    Replacing the rear shock

Not sure when this darned cold snap will end that it gets warm enough in the garage to work on the bike. When that happens, I am replacing the rear shock on my 1st gen. and was wondering if anyone has pics and/or a step by step explanation of the procedure. Would appreciate if anyone has so I have a better understanding of what I'm getting into. Would appreciate knowing if there are any special tools needed, and roughly how long this job should take. Thanks
  14. g,day all has anyone replaced the rear air shock on an 83 venture with something standard ie non air shock
  15. just put my secound I basket in and it still makes the same noise. that sucker still screams at about 24-32 hundred rpms. it is even lowder than the g basket i took out . I wish i had a H basket to put in or a p-q-r-m-or somthing to stop the noise lol. and on top of that my shock just started leaking, and my guy at the dealer said he had to have my bike long enough to take picture of shock -send it in before they would send another to us. he said this takes about 2 weeks??? O- O-what will i do for 2 weeks??
  16. Anyone have any info on the upgrade to the 83 standard that involves getting a royale shock and a progressive spring for it to upgrade and tighten up the rear shock? I'm putting in progressive springs in the front of my bike this winter, and was thinking of doing that upgrade in the back while everything is completely apart.
  17. What pressure is everyone running in their rear shock? Does it have to be checked and replenished just like the tires?
  18. I have an `83 standard that had a bad rear shock. I ordered a rear shock for a Royale along with a Progressive replacement spring. I read that as an option somewhere on here, but don't know who gets the credit for posting it. Yesterday, I finally got around to installing zerk fittings on the shock assembly following Freebird's instructions. I installed them on the wrong side of the front arm and have a replacement on the way. I haven't read anything about putting zerk fitting on the top and bottom mounts of the shock itself. Looking at the shock, it makes perfect sense to me to do it, but I know better than to assume. Has anyone done this? Is it a bad idea? Also - my old shock leaked all over me when I turned it upside down without the air hose attached to it. The replacement didn't. What, if anything, should I put in it and how much?
  19. After my accident, I've noticed a sometimes annoying squeaking in what sounds to be coming from the rear shock on my 07 Venture. Is this a common ailment or is it something serious where I shouldn't ride the bike. The bike handles like it's on rails so I haven't noticed any difference in that area. TIA, Eddie
  20. Yesterday we went for a short ride. I noticed that I would feel what I call "hard bumps" from the rear of the bike that I didn't feel from the front. Almost like I would run over something with the front tire and not feel it, but would feel it from the rear of the bike. I had 70 lbs. in the rear shock and the rebound is set on #2. Is it possible for the shock to be bad and still have that much air press. in it? I haven't been riding much this summer but seem to remember one other time that this happened, but upon checking the air press. then it was down between 40-50 lbs. and it went away when I increased the press. Haven't noticed any oil under the bike in the shock area, but haven't gotten down and really looked. Any info, help will be appreciated. Don H.
  21. I found a reference on another forum regarding a supplier of Penske shocks for H-D motorcycles. I e-mailed and got a quick response from the owner. He quoted a price of approximately $500 and up, for a replacement shock for the RSV. I am not in the market yet but I recommend anyone considering replacing their rear shock to give this guy a look. He was very responsive to my questions. I would be interested in anyone who goes with a Penske. This is his contact info: Howard G. 22. Just got my bike back after its been in the shop for 4 weeks and two days. I rode it to work and back for the past two days, approximately 120 miles. I parked it in the driveway when I got home and my wife and I took a walk around the yard. When we got back to the driveway, I was walking up to the bike to put it in the garage, and I noticed an oil spot under the bike. I looked under the bike and noticed oil leaking from the bottom of the shock. Now, I had the bike serviced while the dealer had it and was just hoping it could be something venting that caused the oil leak. I've read bad stories about shocks going bad and leaking oil. I hope thats not the case. If it is I'm going ballistic on Yamaha. I have just about had it with this bike. If it is the shock, can I ride it till I get the time to take it to the dealer and get it replaced? Anyway, any advice if it is a shock, and what should I do with this bike. It has less than 5000 miles on it and I'm just about ready to get rid of it. Thanks, Glenn
  23. last month my 84 Venture sat for about 2 weeks. Apparently she was lonely and to show me she started dripping oil @ the seal of the right shock. Just a small leak so I kept riding. Well she didn't like having to sit again for another 2 weeks, so this time she dumps a puddle of oil about 6" inches wide from the front wheel to the rear. How is it that it can leak "up" while just sitting in the garage? Thanks in advance
  24. Does your shock have seal on the botton .I found some oil on the botton of it there was a small puddle under the bike were it is:icon_smile_question
