  1. well tested #1 coil and it was firing at 5,000 kv when cold, and dropped out when hot. all others were at 10,000-12,000kv and work good, so I got some used coils and replaced #1, problem solved. bike has more power than it has had in a while and fuel mileage has been good for two tanks. This coil must have been going bad for a while I had been noticing that the performance didn't feel right but it wasn't until the fuel mileage got bad that I really got concerned and started checking it over. Has anyone tinkered around with making some kind of shield for the rear coils to protect them from road spray? I did put dielectric grease on the contacts to help and made sure the boots on the coil connectors were up tight, but I really don't like where these are located. I am going to try to make some kind of shield to block some of the elements. Thanks for all the help.:clap2::clap2::clap2::clap2::clap2::clap2:
  2. Had to replace my cluster on my 07 RSTD because of the reset button quit working, when they installed the new cluster they did not set my mileage. I brought in a bike with 26,000 miles on it and left with a new one one with 0 miles. I asked the dealership about it and they said they couldn't reset the new one to match the old mileage . This makes me kinda of leary about recommending someone to buy a used one. I know this doesn't really help with the problem in the post just wanted to let you know what the dealership told me about resetting mileage.
  3. Anyone running aftermarket coils on their second gen RSTD? did you notice enough of a difference to justify the cost? also would like to know if you are running hotter coils and aftermarket exhaust did you change anything in the carbs? thanks for any input
  4. Quick update. mileage was good for 1 tank of gas after 3 tanks mileage is off again. pulled plugs and the same one was fouled (left rear) I guess maybe a weak ignition coil. I am going to test firing voltage when I get a chance. Might try to see if I can swap the two rear coils and see if my problem moves and I'll know for sure. I'll keep info posted.
  5. Just gotta ask Condor where and what is the boost valve. I cannot find it mentioned anywhere in the repair manual
  6. My Issue was a fouled plug. RJALAMO I would still pull your plugs. My engine developed a miss with each plug wire removed individually while running, but when I removed the plugs I found the left rear plug was wet with gas. So I am assuming it was not firing fully. The gap was Ok so I just replaced that plug and went for a ride. My mileage was back to the normal 42MPG. Just a note I also resynched the carbs since I synched them with a cylinder not firing correctly when I was trying to figure out what was wrong. They were off slightly. All is now OK:clap2:
  7. I have a 2007 RSTD that has developed a problem. Usually it does not sit more than a few days but due to the weather and illness it sat for about 1 1/2 months in a cycle shelter outside. When I fired it up to ride I noticed that when riding with steady throttle the bike would lurch as if suddenly getting fuel. My guess was trash in Carbs. I ran the gas out put in a bottle of seafoam and filled up with premium and rode hard. The bike seemed to clear up but still ran a little flat. So I synched the carbs ( which I do at each oil change) I also checked and cleaned the air filters. Bike seems to run OK but I have noticed that I have lost about 10-12 MPG!!!! I did notice when I synched the carbs that the vent ports used for synching the carbs had a little fuel in them. Does anyone have any idea what would cause this???? I have double checked and resynched the carbs( they were OK) no fuel leaks, air filters clean. The engins seems to run ok so I don"t think that the plugs are bad, they were replaced about 4000 miles ago. Any suggestions on what else to check I really don"t want to go to the stealership but losing 40 miles per tank may be worth it if it comes down to it. Thanks for any help
  8. I've been running pirelli Route 66 tires and for the money they have been good. The only thing I've noticed is that they don't feel as good when they are cold ( 30 degrees or colder). I got 12,000 miles out of the last set andf have 6,000 on the current set
  9. My 2007 RSTD has a heck of whine and has since it was new. I was told it would quiten once every thing was broke in. Well I have now tripped 25,000 miles and am still waiting for it to break in. I am going for my 26,000 mile service soon and may try to insist on replacing the clutch basket. The noise is only there under a load but people I ride with cannot hear it when riding beside me. it drives me crazy ecspecially when I put the windshield on.
  10. Well I took it apart and when I loosened the pinch bolt the rear arm jumped jumped out a 1/2 inch!! The only thing I can figure is that the dumb a***** tightened the pinch bolt first then the axle nut. I did not see anything else wrong and I greased the drive splines really good but still have this noise. I am thinking maybe a bearing or something was put in a bind and will now have to replaced. sounds like maybe a good time for a V-Max rear gear swap.
  11. Hey guys, I just had my rear tire changed by a shop down the street from where I work( I dropped it off because I did not have time to pull off the tire myself). Since the tire was changed I have a rubbing/squeeking noise when the bike is pushed backwards and it is there a little when going forward. It sounds like it is definitely coming from where the diff connects to the tire. There is no clicking noise and I have looked at the brakes and it is not coming from there. I was wondering if anyone had any Idea what they could have screwed up between the diff and the tire. I cannot think of anything in there that could cause this. I also drained the rear end oil and it is clean so I don't think it is in the rear diff. I am going into work early tomorrow to pull the tire and I was hoping someone might give me a tip on what to look for. I have pulled the tire before and it went back together no problem, so i can't think of anything in there that could be out of place. everything on the outside looks good nut on shaft is tight and spacer is installed correctly on right side. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
  12. Also a company called hacker exhaust makes good looking slip ons. http://www.hackerpipes.com/products/metric.php#Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Venture I would like to know if anyone on here has a set. I have bubs on and I am having the problem of tips flaking also. I have put three sets of tips on now under warranty thank goodness because these tips sell for $190.00. I will buy another set of mufflers when these are out of warranty.
  13. I can tell you that on my 07 RSTD I opened the holes up to about 4" and the bike fell on it's face in the lower RPM'S. This is just my experience. I have read a lot of people's claims have had no problem. maybe just my bad luck. I have BUB slip-on mufflers and K&N filters. no other Mod's. I had to make a plate to cover the large hole and put it back to stock. Good Luck.
  14. It is in the last part of the rejetting post

  20. Can anyone verify for me where the shim placement is for the needle valve modification. I want to make this mod. I read the article in the tech section but it is not clear to me where to move or add the shim. I think it goes under the plastic piece on the needle but want to be sure before I do this. I also was hoping to hear from some people who have made this mod without jetting the carbs. Is it worth the effort? thanks for the help
  21. Thanks for all the input. problem solved. I made a plate to cover the enlarged hole in the air box, then I cut a hole that looked about the same as what the oem hole was and bike runs fine again. You live and learn I guess.
  22. Thanks for the replies guys. I did open the air intake hole on the air box up a little when I changed the filters. I know 5th is an overdrive, that was just an example because i do not have a tach and i figured everyone would know about where the engine rpm was. It does not only do this in 5th it does it in every gear and did not do this for the first 13,000 miles, this just started. I have run a can of sea foam through (second half of can is in the tank now added yesterday) Also I wanted to add that when the bike is warmed up and you are standing behind it the exhaust to the left is cooler than the exhaust on the right and feels to be pulsing where the one on the right has a more constant pressure.
  23. Hi guys. I'm new here and to the yamaha royal star. I have been riding Kawasakis and Harleys for the last 12 years and now am the proud owner of a 2007 RSTD. I have a problem with the bike that has just occured. I have had the bike since Dec. and have put 13,000 trouble free miles on it until now. I recently added K&N filters and on the initial ride i noticed that when cruising in the lower RPM's (lets say in 5th between 55-70mph) when I twist the throttle 100% the bike bogs down.If I roll out to about 3/4 throttle it picks back up. Once into the higher rpm's the bike doesn't bog down as bad but I can feel it is holding back. I changed out the spark plugs, went back to the stock filters and evem synched the carbs and have the same problem. I am hoping someone can give me some guidance as to what it could be. I am pretty mechanically inclined, but since this setup is new to me I'm scratching my head. Thanks for any help:confused24:
