Nice to see a younger person on a Royale. I know a lot of younger folks who would only like a sport bike; my son included ('93 SECA II). But, your son will find out this Venture is a pretty sporty ride too. Love mine! My wife, two out of the three daughters, and my son ride too. I admit that I did the initial prompting, but they all love it now.

goodbye rk mufflers 4ever??
Beau-Kat replied to kyle's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Oh well... I got my new (cheap, cheap) RKs and the brackets a year ago, but haven't taken the time to put them on. With all of this discussion, my interest is up again. I guess I at least gotta install them and try them out now. With my long weekend starting in a few hours, I will several days to do some testing. -
Used use Sea Foam for many years and liked it. About two years ago, I switched to Chevron Techron Complete Fuel System cleaner and like it a bit better. I read an article by a guy who worked in the petrochemical industry for many years and was a biker. He explained the differences between a polybutylamine (Sea Foam) and a polyethylamine (Techron). I'm no petro chemical savvy dude, but the Techron seems to give me better results. But, I surely wouldn't knock the use of Sea Foam by those who like it. I plan to try the Marine Sta-Bil (Blue colored stuff) to combat the water attraction issue with today's ethanol laced fuels. I used regular Sta-Bil (the red stuff) this winter in my bikes and mowers and stuff. Seemed to work quite well as a fuel stabilizer.

Just what kind of info I was looking for. I knew there must have been a reason that I had not installed a new sending unit yet. I was waiting to hear this very info. I totally agree with you on how my bars drop on the MM (at least that part of the unit still works). Mine acts exactly like you said yours did. I'll be replacing mine with a newer version also. Thanks again for the replies.

Do you like the way that one (the '06 one) works or would you prefer the earlier model?

Trunk rack for 1st gens
Beau-Kat replied to Beau-Kat's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Did you make those wide flat strips under the legs or did you buy them somewhere? -
That's one of the best features of my Garmin - all of the points of interests (gas stations, restaurants, banks, parts stores, hospitals, etc.) it will locate for you. Man, I really love that feature. Sure does cut my anxiety. I use to write down where I would find gas stations open when I traveled along the interstates at night. Because, I had discovered that if I only took notice of the stations that were open during my daylight traveling, there was no guarantee they would also be open at night. Bought fuel using my credit card at a closed station one time. At 3am, with no one around, and only dim area lighting, that was a little spooky. At least i was able to fuel up. Now, if I could only get my Garmin back from my wife and daughters before my next trip. They use it all of the time.

Mine use to sputter exactly when the fuel light would come on. And I mean it happened every time. Crazy! Now it doesn't do that because my fuel light and reserve tripometer do not work anymore. I guess I'll be replacing my fuel sending unit at first opportunity.

Trunk rack for 1st gens
Beau-Kat replied to Beau-Kat's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks Condor. It took me a few days to get back on the forum. Those are some great photos and show me the differences between the 1200 and 1300. What's the trim piece above the trunk latch on the 1300? My '88 doesn't have that, but it sure looks cool! Rusty -

Trunk rack for 1st gens

Looks like you did a great job with the bracing and the cosmetics. If I find a rack, I'll have to do that too. Thanks for the info. -
Trunk rack for 1st gens

I've seen the 1300 Venture medallions and like they way those look. Don't know if I'll find a clean Yamaha rack though. Pictures would be nice so I can compare. I appreciate the assistance and thanks for the suggestions. -
Trunk rack for 1st gens
Beau-Kat replied to Beau-Kat's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yeah. I know about that cracking stuff. Thanks. I usually have some sort of rear rack on my bikes because I'm always riding one of my bikes and never know when I will need to strap something (hopefully not too heavy) back there. Even my SR500 has a rear rack. -
O.K. guys. I know a whole lot about the mechanicals of my 88 VR, but not much about the body, plastic, chrome, etc. Can all years of the 1st gens use the same trunk luggage rack? What I'm asking is if the 1200 and 1300 VRs had the same size and shape tail trunks? O.K. Is there anywhere to buy a new, good quality (maybe even N.O.S.) trunk rack for a VR these days? Thanks.

Yup. That's what it looked like. It cruised past the rest of us on I-26 at a pretty good clip. I think the driver did wave though, at least to some other biker on a chopper. Thanks for the info!

V-Max Rear Gears
Beau-Kat replied to lsutley's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Not the transmission, but the rear end (ring and pinion set contained within the overall housing). I usually prefer to say rear differential, but the thread was started with "pumpkin". The term pumpkin was really probably derived from a Ford's rear differential which could be unbolted (from the front) of the rear housing and removed as a single unit. I know I called my rear end ring and pinion unit a "pumpkin" (or in SC, a punkin) in my first vehicle, a 1966 F100 truck. -
I was out on the 88 today on I-26 in Charleston, SC. Was passed by a pink (?) RSV. Was that any member on here?

Got Tired of that "Bare Look" in the Trunk
Beau-Kat replied to SilvrT's topic in Poor Man Tips and Fixes
Looks great. The grey color oughta make things easier to find in the trunk. I like the standard organizer/pouch in my RSV and want to put one in the 88 VR trunk. Anybody have any suggestions on where to find something like that? I know I could probably make something, but it would probably not look as nice. I may be a little crafty, but have never been called a craftsman. Ha! -
V-Max Rear Gears
Beau-Kat replied to lsutley's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Just installed a Venture pumpkin in my '98 VMax to lower my RPMs about 500. I did not change the shaft. No problems going that way. I understand the VMax shaft is a little more beefy than the Venture's. Why would you want to put a VMax rear end in a 1st gen? Since the VR and RSV transmission gearing is different, my '88 VR already turns more RPMs than my MMRSV at speed. I wouldn't see the need to raise the RPMs further. Now, if you're making a cool dragster out of the Venture... then the beefier shaft may be needed with the VMax pumpkin. Maybe I answered my own question with that one...swap out the pumpkin and hang on! -
The only poor comments I have ever heard about these Voyagers has to do with the two piece battery venting tube. It will age, sometimes come apart, and sometimes drip a little vented acid onto the engine. Other than that, that oughta be a good solid ride, IMHO.

GOTTA BE MY GRANDSON! I CAN PROVE IT. Look at the size of that throttle hand and just imagine the twisting strength in that wrist. Yup, gotta be related to me.

I could only wish for mileage like that. My '98 Suburban is a K2500, 7.4 Vortec and 4WD. Lots of power, but only about 12mpg on the road. 10 mpg pulling my 30 ft. 5000# camper on flat land. 7.5 mpg pulling that camper in the mountains last fall. I have OPEC on speed dial for emergency road side fueling:fiddle:. Good thing I have a 44 gallon tank. 160K on the odo. But I love it. It's very dependable. Just took it and a 6x12 enclosed trailer to Indiana to pick up the '88VR in November:mytruck1:. Maybe I'll get something newer in a few years.

So you don't feel too badly... Here is a couple of photos of my Suburban from last week end's snow event. And one bright spot in my weekend, my new grandson (and first grandchild), Jordon. Born on Friday, the 12th. Even in the very rare event of snow in the Lowcountry, God brings us a little sunshine.
