1. I'm having my Gall bladder out Thursday and I have a question for anyone who has had it out the old fashion way ( they have to do a biopsy at same time and that's near the liver) Laproscopic is out. I just wonder how the recovery went. This is my first major surgery and getting a straight answer from the doctors is tough. I know the RSTD gets parked for awhile. WebMD sayes 4 to 6 weeks -- truth? How about all the other things food, pain activities Etc.? Thanks up front
2. Its been a week and the new len's is great. The replacement surgery went great and Its nice to be able to read with out glasses any more. Still have to use drops in the eye for 3 more weeks but well worth it. Started back on the Grills today.
3. I may have relief coming to my acute lower back pain. I saw a nuero surgeon today and he said my only really viable option is to have a Lumbar Discectomy. This has been scheduled for this coming Friday morning. He said physical therapy and epidural shots would not be effective. This is the third doctor I have seen for this, first surgeon. 1st was a chiropractor that wanted to do a modern form of traction that he said had a chance to fix it, insurance wouldn't cover. Didn't like his sales pitch, but he did get an MRI ordered which showed extent of problem. My family doctor said surgery was likely the only option and referred me to this surgeon. He was a very likable doctor, not uppity like some can be. He went over all the required talk about risks and potential problems and said he had to wait at least a week to do surgery because I am taking a high dosage of motrin with percocets and the motrin cause blood thinning. Have to let that clear up first. For the last 8 weeks I have had rapidly increasing lower back pain and numbness in my lower left leg. This is a life changing type pain. I am on 8 percocets a day and the pain is still as bad as kidney stone I had several years back. The disc between my L4-L5 vertebra has herniated and is pushing against my back & leg nerves. The MRI report said there was a10 x 13mm extrusion nearly filling the spinal canal. Doctor said the surgery would be about 2 hours and be 1 or 2 incisions about 2" long. I will be able to go home the same day. I should have immediate releif from the pain if surgery is successful. They said I would be able to walk around and was encouraged to get mild exercise starting the next day. I may still make MD in Oberlin, but it won't be on the bike. Won't know till a few days after surgery. If I can't make it I will need a volunteer to follow up with the dinner Friday night at Quaker Steak & Lube so I don't dump this on Don. Isn't much, just getting a rough head count and calling restaurant. Wish me luck, I'm going in. This is a surgery I am looking forward to getting, it's that painful. Gary
4. As many of you are aware Don (Gunboat) has the early stages of Prostate Cancer. Today is the day that he goes in for his surgery. If you would please keep him in your prayers. I dont often come on and ask for things like this, but Don is one of my very best friends and I love him dearly. Here's hoping for a successful surgery and full recovery.
5. I have noticed in the past that several members are or were active duty military. I have a couple of questions about dealing with the VA. When I was in the USAF, I had surgery done on my knee and my miniscus carteldge was removed. The VA filed me as less than 10% disabled. While I do get to go to the VA clinics and they have done a follow up surgery, I am needing surgery again. The surgeon even says my cartiledge is gone and I should be on disability. Unfortunately for me, the nearest hospital is New Orleans. After Katrina, the hospital was damaged beyond repair. They are currently using Tulane Univ. training hospital but are limited on the number of days they have access to the surgery. Presently, I have basically additional floating bones in my knee area that keep floating into the joint area and creating a rather electifying experience. I am on the list for surgery to remove the particals as I am "too young" for replacement, but have not been scheduled. And truthfully, not sure when it will happen. My questions are: 1. How do I get the VA to upgrade, my disability - I have tried being reevaluated, but they just touch my scar and say nothing has changed. 2. How do I get the VA to move me up on their schedule, I have been waiting since Halloween and jonesing to ride my bike. TIA Joe
6. Charlene is out of surgery and in her room keeping me running helter skelter..........but thats what I am here for. She is doing well, doc removed 2 discs and inserted a plate with 6 screws. Said she will be good to go, she had one that was really bad and that was the trouble spot but he cleaned it all up and gave her a very good prognosis. She might be going home tomorrow, wow day after major surgery on her neck and going home the day after...............Thanks for all your prayers. We are very greatfull for all the VR family........... .
7. Here we go again, Charlene is having more surgery, on her neck this time, she has 3 ruptured discs, going to have 2 of them removed and have some donor bone, cages, a plate and 6-8 screws put in. This is one we weren't expecting but after she had her hip replaced and her spinal surgery she was still having numbness and pain being caused by the bad disc. She is going back to Emory Hospital in Tucker, Ga. They are very good at what the do, I highly reccomend them to anyone who may need any kind of orthopedic surgery done.
8. My Father, who is 86 years old, had surgery this past Monday to repair an Abdominal aortic aneurysm, 6.6 cm in dia... While they were in repairing the aneurysm, they found He also had a twisted bowel which they corrected as well. The first three days after surgery he seemed to be recovering very well. But by the forth day he started halucinating and is now totally delerious. As well his abdomin is starting to look very bloted and the nurses are hinting at the possibility of a post surgery infection. He is not sleeping, and and is having constant conversations with people from his past who are no longer with us. My father went through two wars.one being WWII were as a youth he was in and out of prison camps having escaped twice and later helped with the dutch underground and red cross units. After that he joined the dutch Marines and spent two years in jungle warefare in Indonesia, were he led a small demolition and tactical assault team. The events of those years is were he seems to revert to the most were he dwells on lost friends and team members. Or relives the horrors he has Gone through or witnessed. Needless to say we are very worried and hope He pulls out of this well and healthy, and I am asking for prayers on his behalf.
9. Just wanted to share this with everyone. Some of you know about all my struggles with my left eye and some don't. It's a long story but I will make it short. While on a trip out west last June I had hemorrhaging in my left eye and a membrane tear inside the eye and lost the sight in it. I have had 3 different surgeries since then with no results. I have been able to see about a total of 3 weeks since June 24th when this happened. We had one more chance to fix it with this last (4th) surgery I had on the 10th of this month. As of this morning (Tuesday the 18th) I can now see. It isn't 20/20 but about 20/70 or so and I can live with that. It is so wonderful to be able to see out of both eyes again. Anyway thanks for listening. Rick
10. As the lawyer slowly came out of the anesthesia after surgery, he said, "Why are all the blinds drawn, doctor?" "There's a big fire across the street," the doctor replied. "We didn't want you to think the operation was a failure."
11. Well today I go in at 9 am for my Shoulder Replacement surgery. This las week has been a real PIA. They took me off all my pain meds in preparation for the surgery. So most of the time I've felt like I have been run over by a truck. Gonna miss not checking in. Be back on Friday or Saturday. Wish me luck, Jay
12. I had my Cervical spine surgery weds, every thing went well. Dr Smisson told Karren the surgery went perfectly as planned. He did fusion C5 to C7 with plate. I was the first person the that Dr Smission has let go home the day of surgery. Yes did it as outpatient. I am doing well, still having some pain, but they said that was normal. Pain should subside in a few days. Gregg
13. My PGR buddy Al "War Dog" Burns and his wife Tonya were in a very bad motorcycle accident in Knoxville yesterday, and are in critical condition at University Hospital. Tonya was pronounced dead at the scene. Their kids are either there or are en route, and they may need some assistance with housing, since they are all from out of town and none of them are very well off financially (recent job losses and one who just had cancer surgery). If anyone is aware of some very inexpensive housing/hotel options in that area, please PM me and I'll pass it on to them. Please keep Al in your prayers. Here is the article I found about the accident: http://www.wbir.com/news/article/137882/2/One-dead-one-injured-after-Monroe-Co-motorcycle-accident Thanks.
14. Charlene is out of surgery and back in her room now, they will have her up and walking after lunch. The Dr. said her hip was really bad, and said she should have had this surgery years ago....The doctors here are the best, on top of all the latest techniques, in fact they pioneer much of it at Emory Univ, which this is part of................She is still a little groggy, and has her pump for the pain which I have to keep reminding her to use..........It is unbeleivable how small the incision is for this type of surgery, its only about 4 inches long, and its on the front side of her hip, new technique only done by a couple of surgeons, the recovery time is much shorter and far less restrictions as to what she can do. We will she how well she walks after lunch..................
15. Got an e-mail from Jean......Earl came through the surgery very well. He may be discharged from the hospital shortly!!
16. We have to get up extra early tomorrow, we have to be at the hospital at 5:30 in the morning. Charlene is going back in for a total hip replacement. Hopefully this will be the last surgery she will have, they say there is a fair chance her knee pain may lessen after this surgery, if so it will be the end to all of her problems, I dont know how she has put up with all the pain from her back, hip and knee. along with me the royal pain. She should be out of the hospital by Saturday if all goes well. Recovery will be much faster than her back surgery. She will be up and walking the afternoon of the surgery. Please keep her in your prayers.
17. Taters is having another round of surgery on the wrist she broke 2 months ago...please remember her in your prayers tonight....we're hoping all goes well and this will be the last time she will need to go through this.....She insists that all the hardware installed earlier be removed....no more loose screws for her.....
18. Monday evening I received a call from PastorPaul. He had just arrived home from the hospital following surgery the previous Tuesday, which I had reported earlier. He sounded pretty good, all in all, which was encouraging. He had hoped to be home last Friday, but there had been a few complications to cause the delay. About half an hour ago I got a call from Toni to let me know that Paul was being rushed into surgery tonight due to what appears to be a fairly serious infection that has resulted from the surgery. So, I ask, yet again, for your thoughts and prayers for our good friend Paul in his time of need... Thank You! TERRY
19. Well it appears my riding season will be starting a little later than I had hoped. My Arthiritis has cailmed another victiom. My right big toe joint is shot, making it extremely painful to walk and with my job I walk alot. So...March 16th I'm having surgery to have the joint replaired or replaced. I can go back to work in a week, but Doc thinks I should stay off the bike for about 4 weeks (but I bet don't) Anyway I am looking forward to walking with less pain, so that's a good thing. Now if I could just convince my other Dr to replace my shoulder I might be able to be relatively pain free for a few years. Sucks when your body checks out.
20. I wanted to let everyone know that Toni Knox called me about an hour and a half ago with news of Paul's surgery. He had just finished, after about 6 hours, and the doctors say that everything went well! Please post your prayers and well-wishes here in support of a full and speedy recovery. I know they will both appreciate it... Please also check out this thread and show your support if you can: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=45243 Thank You! TERRY
21. Hey all, B2Dad is having surgery Tuesday on his right hand. He has arthritis in his thumb and the doctor at Vanderbilt is inserting a tendon (from his arm) and putting it in the joint at the base of his thumb. He has been in awful pain for awhile now but finally decided to get this done. The surgery won't be too bad, outpatient, but the healing process will take awhile and doctor said it may be 8 weeks before he can ride. Will you please pray for me while he is "laid up" and can't ride? Then again, I could learn to drive the bike and take him for a ride, doncha think? As soon as the weather gets better of course... Patti
22. Here are a couple of pictures of Charlene, in the first pic is her new best friend, "The Happy Button" This picture was taken at 6:00 AM, the morning after her surgery!!!!!
23. Charlene is out of surgery, havent seen her yet, but talked to the surgeon and he said everything went well, she should be able to sit in a chair sometime tomorrow and may be able to walk some...:clap2:They sure have come a long way with this type of surgery.......
24. Charlene is back in her room now, surgery went well, they removed 3 discs and put in 3 cages to fuse the vertabrae, she is a little sore and using the pump to stay relatively pain free. Next surgery is on Thursday, when they insert the rods and screws to straighten her spine. Please keep the prayers coming. Thanks Lewis & Charlene
25. On Monday morning we head out to the hospital in Tucker, Ga., so Charlene can have her long awaited surgery on her spine, it has been a long and tough road for her, I don't know how she did it, I would have given up by now if it would of been me, but she is a trooper and has tolerated it, even though she was in great pain and could hardly walk, she isnt' nervous about it, in fact I think she is excited about getting better, but its making me very anxious. She will be having two seperate surgery's the first Monday and the second more intensive on Thursday, it should last anywhere from 6-8 hrs maybe longer. So if you would offer up a prayer to guide the surgeons hands to a successful surgery and easy recovery for Charlene it would be greatly appreciated. I will be on vacation for the next 2 weeks while she is in the hospital and helping her on her first days home after that her sister from Houston will be here taking care of her while I am at work.
