  1. Just got the new JP catalog today. Kuryakyn and Barons finally came out with Bar End Weights for those of us with Iso Grips. Barons are available now while Kurys come out in June. Its about time.....:mo money:

    Grips

Long story short. Had to ride home Sunday from just outside Winston Salem, NC to Atlanta in the snowstorm. Made it as far as Duncan, SC before the ice got too bad we decided to quit. Waited out the snow and the next morning we were warming up the bikes and we had started them and I turned on my grip heaters to get good and warm. As I came out of the room, I got bunches of smoke coming from under the tank!!!!!!!!!!!!!Smelled just like burnt wires. First instinct was to turn off grip heaters and then bike. Restarted the bike and it looks as if the grip heaters shorted, as I had no further problems. Now, the real question is, I'd like to replace the grips. I've really never been happy with the ones on there (I assume they're stock, bought bike used) but they had installed grip heaters. Now I'd like to find a pair of grips that are larger in diameter and maybe with built in heaters? Do they make such an animal for the RSV? I'm not into flash, so chrome ain't the big deal, but a larger pair of grips hopefully with some heat would really fit the bill. Anyoone here have any suggestions? Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!
  3. A guy at work was installing some Kuryakin Grips and broke the thingamajig that the throttle cable attaches to (no. 8 in the picture). I'm sure it wouldn't have to be from a V-Star, I think any that fits a 1" bar will work. Does anyone here have one?
  4. How many of you all have installed leather hand grips on your bikes. I am thinking of putting some on my bike, but am curious to hear back from people who have installed them. Any pics of your grips would be appreciated. I like the looks of the ones on Squidleys bike that is in the classifieds. Ken
  5. I really like the Kuryakyn iso grips, and I am wondering: Is there a set of grips that will work for the first gen venture? I notice some of them come with a throttle sleeve installed, which would be nice rather than fighting one on the old sleeve. TIA.
  6. 09 RSV.....I have a pair of Kuryakan grips ordered and want to make sure I understand how to install them. I've installed the Kuryakan grips on a different bike in the past and it was pretty easy. After reading some posts about installing them on an RSV, some folks refer to separating the throttle switch housing and removing the cables. I don't understand why this is necessary? Don't the new 6235 Kuryakan grips just slide on over the throttle's plastic sleeve? Thanks.....David
  7. Hey All: Any help here would be appreciated....Going to add some Chrome Grips and Levers to the 06 Venture.... How do the end weights come off?....Is there a "trick" to taking our grips off....I have read about using air pressure, etc... Going with one of the Pro-One Grips below...I have seen both on a V-Star and Road Star.....Probably going with the Ribbed ones?... George In Virginia
  8. I have just purchased #6180 Kuryakyn grips for my '88 VR.......any recommendations/suggestions for installation, orientation and positioning of these grips?? Thanks.
  9. I know what your thinking and I can hear the lectures coming. I don't as a practice ride with no hands. I was resting one the other day and being very, very diligent with the other. For a brief moment when switching over my grip on the bars was very light and I felt what seemed like a wobble from the front end. I was curious so I followed up by slowly lightening my hand pressure from the grips. Sure enough just when I am about to not be touching the grips anymore the front starts to wobble. I have not let it go long, but it seems that it would get very prononced. Is this normal? As I said I don't ride with no hands and I don't ever feel this when holding the grips. Even with one hand. Could this be an out of balance tire or is it something else? Bug
  10. I've installed my Baron's 1.5" risers and what a difference those make.. better riding position.. and now, time to do the hand grips. The stock grips are too small for my large hands.. I know how to take the bar end weights off but how do you get the left side stock handle off? I saw somewhere in another message how this was done when I first got here but for the life of me I can't find that article? I'd love to change them out this morning so hopefully someone is up early today =) Thanks in advance. Cheers!
  11. Hey all, I got a set of Kuryakyn ISO grips that I want to put on my '03 RSMV. I'm sure I'm not the first to have done this mod, so any tips for removing the old grips and placing the new ones on? I'm do-it-yourself challenged (I even have problems changing light bulbs!) so any help would be welcomed. Do the weights unscrew? If so, what's the best way to get them off? I can't seem to find a wrench that would fit and I'd be worried about damaging the finish!
  12. Yesterday I went to the Dealer and purchased some Kuyakyn Iso-grips for the Star. You'ld think that scince I've installed the same grips on my '01 Roadstar and my wife's '06 Mean Streak a a few other bike that this would be easy. Not so. The left grip went on with out any problems. But, when it came to the throttle grip. that was another story. It seems that the good folks at Yamaha H.Q. have dicided that too many of you people were messing around with "Thier" fine motorcycles. So in an effort to curtail this they have installed accessory proof screws on their bikes. It works like this... One of you ingrates goes in to the dealer and "buys" a Yamaha motocycle. You go home with your new bike. You decide that "your" new bike needs a personal touch ( i.e. grips ). You buy some grips. You go home with your new grips. You observe that the throttle housing assembly is fasened together with "Phillips head screws". You find the appropriate "Phillips head" screw-driver in your tool box. You place the srewdriver tightly on the screw. You turn the srewdriver in a counter-clock wise motion. It strips. That sound you heard yesterday at 5:30 Pm Central daylight time, "@#&*% YAMAHA!!!", was just the wind.
  13. Was wondering if anyone was looking for stock grips ? Want to get aftermarket ones but if someone was looking for stock for their aftermarket grips I would trade them. Thanks for your time. Jon
  14. I'm in the process of changing to the Flanders bars. Last night I took the faring, windshield, seat and gas tank off. I plan on taking everything off the old bars tonight. I have new grips and cables. I have never replaced the grips, bars or cables on a bike before and am looking for advice inspiration and insight. There is a good procedure on another site, but it talks about drilling holes in the flanders bars, and I keep thinking what holes. Any advise or help is appreciated.
  15. I just bought a set of Kuryakyn ISO grips to install on my new RSTD. But after reading some old threads here, I am a bit hesitant about losing my bar end weights. There are some members who have machined them to accept the weights, but I do not have the knowledge, nor access to the equipment to accomplish such a feat. Are there any local (Hamilton area) members, who have done the grip installation and would be willing to meet a new member? Or anyone who has successfully mounted the bar weights to the new grips, that could give me some help? My last bike I had for 5 years, and the only accessory I had was saddlebags. I did all my own maintainence, (oil changes, chain tightening etc) but I wanted to dress up my new bike and grips is my first addition. Any and all help is most appreciated. Sonny

    Grips

What size Grips (Kuryakan) go on the 2005 RSV ? Is it 7/8" or 1" ?
  17. Anybody have Kuryakan grips on their Venture and how do you like them ? Any vibration with the weights removed ?Or do the grips compensate for this ?I'am thinking on putting them on the Beast.Let me know please if you can help .Thanks in advance. Bucky Thompson
  18. OK guys , I want to replace the stock grips on my 86 ,Any suggestions on comfort or easiest to install , will be appriciated....Fred
  19. Can someone tell be how to take off the grips that come on the 2007 Venture. I want to put the Kuryakin grips on and the local stealer wants $80.00 to install them and I believe I can do it as long as I don't mess anything up getting them off. Thanks, Eddie
  20. I have looked around and have not seen a specific write-up for the install of heated grips for the RSTD. So I thought that I would take a crack at writing something up based on my recent experience. The first thing that I did in preparation for this install was wire up a relay and terminal strip that I could use for power. I wanted power not just for this install but for future electrical accessories (lights, GPS, and communication system). I found great set of instructions for this at the Canyon Chasers site. Attached is a picture of how I installed mine under the seat (Relay.pdf). I tapped into an unused accessory plug that I assume is a leftover from the Venture wire harness. I tried to find something smaller than the terminal strip I used for distribution but it was inexpensive and it works. I have been unable to find the jumpers to energize the next terminal so I just made my own. I decided to retain the stock grips and install heaters from Dualstar. The price was a bargain (29.95 plus shipping) when comparing different heated grip systems. I struggled for a long time with where to install a switch. I didn’t want to spend much money on anything fancy, I didn’t want any bulky box or pod for switches and the RSTD doesn’t provide too many spaces to stick anything. I wanted something that was inconspicuous and settled on placing it in the plastic cover that conceals the frame and wiring that runs to the forks (Switch.pdf). I may regret this location because it isn’t easy to reach but I think the grips will be something I will not need to be flipping on and off frequently. If I am wrong with this location it will be easy enough to conceal and move on to something better when it comes to mind. The next challenge was getting the grips off. I took the counter weights off without a problem and used a small screwdriver and popsicle stick to pry loose the glue from the grips and worked them off. The next big surprise was the ridges on the throttle tube. I wasn’t expecting this and you must apply the heater to a smooth surface. With a lot of patience, a utility knife and a dremel I removed them and installed the heater element. The clutch side heater is about as simple as putting on a piece of tape and routing the wire down the bars. I did use the dremel to rework the chrome colar that goes with the grip to get a snug fit around the wires. I tested everything at this point and it was then that I ran into a snag. I had a short in the system. I called Dualstar. They helped me diagnose that the problem was on the clutch side and they sent a new one right away. They said they test every unit before it ships but I couldn’t see where I could have crimped or nicked anything thing to caused the problem. Regardless they took care of me. Moving on to terminating the wiring and powering things up… I had ran my power and ground from my terminal strip up under the tank to the switch and into the area under the chrome cowling that covers the speedometer display unit. Special Note: Removing that chrome cowling was a royal pain. It was held in place by three Philips screws that were installed with loctite and one head completely stripped out. Thanks heaven it was one on the out side, they are almost accessible. Had the center screw striped out I would still be standing in the garage swearing to myself wondering how to get it out. Needless to say I replaced the screws with Allen head bolts(Cowling.pdf). I soldered all my connections and put them in shrink-wrap tubing to keep things protected from vibration and the elements. The bundle of wires tucked up under the cowling neatly. I put things back they way they were and now I am waiting for the snow to melt and I can actually go for a ride. The heaters work great in the garage but I guess the big test will be in a few weeks when I can get out and go for a ride and see if they overcome the wind chill that my hands feel sticking outside the protection offered by the windscreen. Hope this helps any of you considering the install.
  21. NEWTrk wants to replace the stock grips with some new ones that are a little bigger in diameter. If you have replaced your grips he is looking for some reviews of what you replaced your stock grips with, and if you the replacements them or not. BTW - We're in Oklahoma so he is not looking at heated grips. Thanks in advance....
  22. Taking old grips off and adding the Kuryakin grips are pretty easy. The guys gave a pretty good description of how to get the old grips off. Here are some pictures I took to kinda help out a little. I already have mine on but it gives a idea and the direction you will need to turn the weight. (my finger pointing) I wished you where closer we could of did it together and taken pictures to post here for the next person. When I took my old grips off I did not take the end piece off with a screwdriver. I used a rubber oil filter remover and strapped it on the weight and twisted toward the fairing and it started spinning off. The 3rd pic is of the threaded end that the weight goes into. If you would like to ad the weights to the end of your handle bars, That is a little more involved, but can be done................Ron 1. Direction of twist on end weight finger points in direction. 2. twisting weight off 3. look at threads on end of handle bar 4 to 8. twisting grip of L to R while pulling 9 & 10 sliding new grip on
  23. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/images/smilies/225.gif any advice on heated grips for a 83 venture?
  24. I replaced my handle bar grips with a pair of Kuryakyn grips ...and now I noticed that my handle bar is shaking more, then before when I take my hands from the handle bar .. Is that because I removed the handle bar weights?
