Not a favorite, just a road report. Ride: July 2009, Weekday, Late AM Gas Available: Lowell, Kooskia. Direction: West Avg Speed: 55 Flora: Ponderosa Fauna Encounters: 0 Subjective Temp: Balmy to warm. [i live in Phoenix, AZ] Road Condition: Lolo to Kooskia: Mostly fair to good. After Lolo Pass, this mountain road parallels Lochsa River with well marked sweepers and tighter corners for the distance. Slightly choppy in some of the corners, thus the fair to good rating. Starting about 30 miles north of Kooskia, construction in progress at three points, down to dirt for 1/4 mile or so on each scrub. One way traffic in construction zones cause 10 to 20 minute waits. Intermittent gravel patches on the road before and after each dirt patch, but usually swept out of the tire tracks by preceding cagers. There was gas available at a turn off between Lolo Hot Springs and Lowell (closer to LHS). I wanted to gas up and have some fun, but the road was dirt and I had dropped my bike two days prior, in Monticello,UT, when I put my foot down on some gravel and it slid out. So I decided I didn't want any more of that for a while and kept my rpm's low to Kooskia. Cars Passing Same Direction: 0 Cars Passed Same Direction: a few maybe Cars Passed Opposite Direction: low drip Road Condition: Kooskia to Lewiston: Poor to fair. Poor when you pick up the Clearwater River. This river road, with sweepers everywhere, narrows in places with the shoulder substituted with a concrete barrier. Add longitudinal tire track depressions and I'll say this road is in poor condition. In other areas the road is fair, due to the road opening up a bit, losing the concrete barriers. Near Lewiston, the road becomes four lane expressway in very good condition. Cars Passing Same Direction: a few Cars Passed Same Direction: 0 Cars Passed Opposite Direction: intermittent clumps, maybe 10 - 20 per mile I fought a heavy headwind, the tire tracks and fully loaded bike: wife, dog, loaded bags, trunk and tank bag, for what seemed like hours. This part of the road really beat me up an I was not sorry to see it behind me. When I got to Lewiston, I had to lay down for 20 minutes to get some rest. After going from Salmon to Lewiston, I planned on taking more corners on Washington SR 14 to Portland the next day, but decided that I had had enough curves for a while, so I took I-84 all the way and was happy to do so. Perhaps I'll take this route again, on another day: solo on a standard liter bike or sport tourer, but never again loaded the way I was on this trip.

Not a favorite, just a road report. Ride: July 2009, Friday, PM Gas Available: Accross from the casino soon after picking up US 93 south. Direction: South Avg Speed: 75 Flora: Low desert Fauna Encounters: Bat(?) and knee meet. Knee 1, bat 0. Subjective Temp: Balmy. [i live in Phoenix, AZ] Road Condition: Very nice. Once out of the mountains, arrow straight. Well marked. Got to the dam around 9'ish. Went right on through. No backups, but steady traffic in both directions. After the dam, first 15 miles are under construction with no passing and a 55 limit. No dirt. Smokeys Seen: 0 Cars Passing Same Direction: 2 Cars Passed Same Direction: maybe a couple, but I think 0 Cars Passed Opposite Direction: trickle I lucked out on this road after crossing the dam. Once on my way, I was second in line behind a truck that was doing 35 mph going up the hills. After about 10 miles in the construction zone, I had to pass him. So the cars behind him were held in check and I had the road to pretty much to myself. Thankfully, none of the headlights behind me was a smokey. Would have been very costly had one been behind me that wanted to pursue. BTW, My brother-in-law did the dam in the early afternoon in a truck with a one hour wait.

Not a favorite, just a road report. On the map, this is the road from Overton to the dam that is nearest the lake. Ride: July 2009, Friday, PM Gas Available: Accross from the casino soon after picking up US 93 south Direction: West Avg Speed: 55 Flora: Low desert Fauna Encounters: 0 Subjective Temp: Warm. [i live in Phoenix, AZ] Road Condition: Poor, Fair, then Good with intermitent sweepers and a few tighter corners. Top one third, out of Overton, there are three places down to dirt. Each one maybe 1/2 mile long on average. Next one third, the road becomes fair with older center reflectors. About two thirds of the way to the dam, the road becomes good with new center reflectors all the way. Good signage for direction to the dam. Got to the dam around 9'ish. Went right on through. No backups, but steady traffic in both directions. Smokeys Seen: 0 Cars Passing Same Direction: 2 Cars Passed Same Direction: 0 Cars Passed Opposite Direction: few BTW, Overton is a hole. Move on. I have taken my trailer on the "Summer 09 Tour" and I am proud to say it has been a success so far. The trailer, "Rosemary", has tacked the Blue Ridge Parkway, Skyline Drive, Pennsylvania rural area, winds of Lake Erie, the rough roads of Buffalo, and she is negotiating New England over these next couple days! Her proudest moment was reaching elevation 6578, at the top at Mt. Mitchell in North Carolina. Her locomotive, "Rachel (05 RSTD), has had no problems pulling her averaging anywhere from 38mpg to 43mpg depending on the terrain, speed, and wind conditions. She does not know she pulling anything unless we hit a bump! The setup gets a lot of comments and picture taking from people we meet! I have pointed everyone in the direction of "VentureRider.org" telling them this is the place where I brainstormed, researched, and got sound advice on the while renovating her and overcoming the initial design flaws. Later this week we will be adventuring in Nova Scotia, Northern Maine, and the Canada. After that I thought we would head west and try out some more mountains!! Thanks all!!

First, I have to say that the car tire discussions on here lately have been some of the most civil I have ever been involved in on any forum. Good job, guys! Anyway, I haven't noticed any discussion on another aspect of the Darkside. Rear M/C tires on the front. One of the reasons we run c/t's is for the long wear life. To compliment the rear c/t, some have taken rear m/c tires and mounted them in reverse on the front wheel because rear tires are built heavier since the majority of the weight and acceleration forces are on the rear. But why in reverse? This is from the Metzler website: "Rear tires can be mounted at front wheels? When producing tires, the top cap is heated with an angle bump on the carcass. To prevent the detachment of the assembled edges the tire has to be mounted (concerning the main stress: acceleration force at the rear wheel or brake force at the front wheel) corresponding to the respective declaration. Therefore the declaration of the driving direction at the tires sidewall is a very important safety regard and has to be noticed absolute. It is not allowed to mount front tires at rear wheels. In case you intend to mount a rear tire on a front wheel it has to be assembled contrary to the driving direction declaration (direction of the arrow at the tires sidewall). Please observe the standards in your country. In any doubts we kindly ask you to consult your dealer." Just look at a normal bike. The tread direction is opposite on the front from the rear. One tire is oriented for acceleration and one for braking. Just some more info for those considering the Darkside.

A couple of weeks ago I bought a set of new Avon tires and changed them myself paying close attention to the directional arrows after a week of riding I checked the air pressure and while checking the front tire I noticed that the front rim had a direction arrow which of course is mounted the wrong direction. I had no idea that the rim was directional or why it is, can anyone tell me the reason for this?

Taking old grips off and adding the Kuryakin grips are pretty easy. The guys gave a pretty good description of how to get the old grips off. Here are some pictures I took to kinda help out a little. I already have mine on but it gives a idea and the direction you will need to turn the weight. (my finger pointing) I wished you where closer we could of did it together and taken pictures to post here for the next person. When I took my old grips off I did not take the end piece off with a screwdriver. I used a rubber oil filter remover and strapped it on the weight and twisted toward the fairing and it started spinning off. The 3rd pic is of the threaded end that the weight goes into. If you would like to ad the weights to the end of your handle bars, That is a little more involved, but can be done................Ron 1. Direction of twist on end weight finger points in direction. 2. twisting weight off 3. look at threads on end of handle bar 4 to 8. twisting grip of L to R while pulling 9 & 10 sliding new grip on
