  1. Can be a couple of things. Have you re-adjusted your idle screw to increase the idle? Having the carbs apart from each other they may have been put back together not quite squarely so that the idle screw is no longer in it's original position. # 2 would be if it's not just idling to slowly to idle but is actually to lean, then your idle screws are to tight or the idle air jet or the passages are clogged so as not to be pulling in the correct air fuel mixture. By the way, you do have the air cleaner in place don't you as these bikes won't run without it in place. Dick
  2. To answer one of your questions - no, your extensions will not fit. There are three different styles of Macs, straight cut, side baloney cut and downturn. They all are a consistent size all the way back though, approximately the same size as the thickest part of a stock muffler. I've had them for seven or eight years now and am very happy with them. Dick
  3. On the idle screws they are 2 to 2.25 turns out from a lightly closed position. There really is no starting place for the sync screws while the carbs are on the bike but you could probably remove the air cleaner and hold open the slides to be able to see the butterfly. You could then turn the adjusting screw for that carb until the butterfly just closes. Then you could use the main idle adjustment to get the bike to idle good enough to sync. Dick
  4. I believe the frame and all of those parts will work except the rear sub frame. That is the part the luggage racks are connected to and are different between 83-85 and 86-93. You would just need to reuse your own sub-frame from your present bike. Dick
  5. I didn't see this until to late. Those usually go for quite a bit more (225.00 - 325.00). I won't pay those kind of prices but I would go 200.00. Chances are the winner's proxy price was much hire anyway. Dick
  6. Hydrocarbons are unburned gas. It's running way rich. Close your idle screws down to around 1 1/2 turns out and that will surely pass your idle tests. I don't know what RPM's that they check your off idle at but lean that area by dropping your needle a notch and going to a lower main if needed. The easiest way to pass though is to change the address on your title to someplace outside of the city. Dick
  7. Man, I don't understand this. In the first year, or maybe even two on a newly designed vehicle, or any piece of machinery, bugs will crop up that need to be dealt with for future models. This bike has had this issue since the bikes inception and still hasn't been dealt with by Yamaha's engineering dept. I've had 2 XS11's and now a 1st gen. and I've loved all 3 but there is no way I would ever consider buying a 2nd gen. Yamaha knowing that it still has this issue. To many other, better designed, bikes around. Dick
  8. There's been air in my rear/front linked system for some time now. Mine is an 83 and doesn't have a bleeder in the neck area as newer bikes have. I bled the rear brake normally last week but the pedal had to really travel for it to work as there is still air in the front brake. I couldn't bleed the front as I can't push the rear brake peddle and bleed the front wheel at the same time. I ordered some Speed Bleeders and installed one on the front wheel Friday and tried bleeding according to instructions and I could get very little air out. The directions said to pump the pedal very slowly but that left air in the neck area of the bike I suppose. Anyhow, I pumped the pedal very quickly about 10 or 12 times and then closed the Speed Bleeder and then just one more pump and I now have a full pedal and the bike stops scary quick. Those Speed Bleeders do make bleeding the system a piece of cake. Dick
  9. Same here. mine arrived in today's mail also. Thanks so much. I got these as spares in case any break off in the future. One of my covers has one missing but I thought I had an extra set of covers put back that I bought a couple of years ago. They look almost new and I got them for a good price. I got them out today and instead of being a set they are both left side covers so it looks like I'm going to be using one of those studs real soon. Thanks again Russ. Dick
  10. Turn signals and emergency flashers are on different circuits and have different flashers. On my 83 Royale the turn signals would come on but not flash. I screwed with them for some time replacing both the flasher and the self cancelling unit to no avail. I finally just left the self cancelling unit unplugged and now the signals work but they must be manually turned off after making your turn. Inconvenient but better than trying to turn the signals on and off to make them flash while sitting at a light while holding in the clutch with the same hand. Dick
  11. Stock Venture grips are longer than most other bike's grips. Although I never used Kuryakyns, I changed to new grips and they, of coarse, came up short as they are for normal bikes. I made a spacer on each side to clean up the area. I must say though that the new grips that I installed, although being shorter in length than stock, they still fit the bars snugly. If the grips are to loose you could always clean the bars real good and then put on some plastic electrical tape that would increase the bars diameter a little making the grips tighter. The grips should go on very snugly so as to not have any movement once in place. A trick I have used to get the grips on a little easier and then still be snug enough to not move is to spray hair spray liberally on both the bar and the inside the grip and then sliding the grip into place. The hair spray acts like a lubricant until dry and then it becomes a light glue that prevents movement. Dick
  12. If I was going to replace my starter I would use a starter from a 95 up V-Max as it looks and fits the same but is a stronger starter. It utilizes 4 commuter brushes instead of 2. I can't remember their name but there is a big motorcycle parts place in Atlanta who was discounting these starters, and all parts for that matter to the Venturers.Org club. They were selling the better starters to members for 155.00. Dick
