  1. Thanks Meach. I had some points in Colorado picked to see, such as Pikes peak and the Royal Gorge. I didn't know anything about Leadville or the John Denver museum. I'll throw them on the list for the group to consider. I had heard the touristy traffic could be a drag in Yellowstone if you went at the wrong time, I just don't know what the right time is (probably prime riding time).
  2. So this weather thing is driving me nuts.....No rain, sleet, snow, etc. By looking out the window here in NW Oklahoma, it looks like it should be 75 Degrees. The ground color and leafless trees aren't even a giveaway, because in this drought everything is the same dull brown color year round anyway. However, the real temp is about 35-65 Degrees with a knife sharp breeze it feels like about 15, but with the occasional day thrown when it really is nice enough to go for a ride on the bike. I guess the point of all this is that we, and a small group of friends are planning a ride through the Tetons and Yellowstone sometime around June. We're not sure what the loop is going to look like, but we might hit KS, NB, SD, WY, ID, UT, CO and NM (did I get those right?)all in the same trip. Besides the usual well known things like the badlands, devils tower, Mt Rushmore.... I'm looking for things of interest that maybe you couldn't find with a google search of "attractions in ______". It seems the more planning I do for this trip, the longer Winter is taking...... All thoughts appreciated as always. Creloe
  3. Ahhhhhhh, Thanks M61A1Mech.......
  4. Thanks for all the info guys. In answer to an above post. The gauge no longer flashed when I got going on the road.......what's "the dreaded ignition switch failure"? The book doesn't say anything about the entire gauge flashing....not that I can find anyway. I have had the tank off last summer to do something under there. Can't remember what it was at the moment, suppose it might be worth a look at the connection. Maybe I'll diagnose the sending unit while I've got it off, been wanting to fix the "low almost out of gas, pull over and fill me up idiot light / F odometer counter thingy" anyway.
  5. Maybe it's a combination of things. I do believe there's a problem with the fuel sender (or the low fuel light) Neither of those indicators work, I just know when it's time to fill up and always leave the reserve just in case. Didn't worry about it because the fuel gauge worked and this bike goes sooooo much further on a tank of fuel than my last one....seems like forever. My Harley friends got nuthin on me now....'cept a biger payment.....LOL. I've only had this bike since last February. The PO told me the battery was bad, however I've not experienced any real symptoms of that while it was ridden regularly (His wife wouldn't let him ride it, so it sat most of the year he owned it). Now it's sat most of Nov. Dec. in my garage due to cold weather and we had one spring (perfect) day in January last week and I rode it to work.......snowed the next day, go figure Oklahoma weather.... It was slow cranking after sitting, maybe I should put the charger on it before the next ride and see if it happens again.
  6. No, UFO....LOL. Yes Full Tank of gas, maybe only down one bar. My first thought was that I bumped the kill switch on the throtle (done that a few times by accident), however not the case in this incident. Second thought was I didn't get the ignition clicked in the "run" position good and a bump in the road made it disconnect. Still not sure because the only thing I did, was: stop, turn the ignition off, turn it to on, start it up and went on home. I couldn't find anything in the Clymer's manual about the entire gauge flashing only the bars on either end. Maybe it's just a one time thing and that's all. Thanks for the thoughts though
  7. Has anyone ever seen the entire fuel gauge flash on and off, like two flashes- pause, then flash again? My bike died the other day while riding home about a mile from work with the gauge flashing. It was like someone turned the key off. No sputtering or anything, just died, with all the electrical components still on. I pulled over, turned the key off, back on, fired it up and came on home without any incident. Any thoughts? Thanks, Creole
  8. EUSA1 Thanks for the information. I was afraid something like that would be the case or the chrome would be so scarred up it would be impossible to polish for a seal that would last and make the entire project not worth the time. This might be exactly why nobody's trying to fix them. This just happens to be my first experience with them and I really didn't want to try and fix mine until I had it replaced in case it wasn't successful. Creole
  9. Well, So far....... the only thing I've discovered is the salvage yard didn't get my description / specification right and they sent me a shock from a Royal star tour deluxe. Meaning.....I have to send it back and I still have to find the one I need. Creole
  10. If I discover anything useful, I will certainly let everyone know.
  11. Ok well, I did come up with one for $150 today and no core charge. The plan at his point is to put the "new used" one on the bike. I plan on taking the old one to work and tearing it down to see what options there are for replacement parts. We rebuild our own rams and hydraulic / pneumatic tools regularly. I cant see this being all that complicated but might require fabricating a piece ot two on the lathe. Normally I wouldn't give a "shock absorber" a second thought because they're generally inexpensively made and supposed to be a throw away part. The absence of options for replacements at a reasonable cost, is worth looking into I suppose. Creole
  12. Ok, I see this conversation pretty much is a sore spot with most folks about the rear shock failure rate, limited replacement options, and the outrageous cost from the dealers. I only am jumping in because.... mine went out last week, when we made our trip to Kentucky. Didn't think it would be a big deal, bounced on home and started digging up information. Don't really like the options thus far, and I think ive read about every post on the subject. However, here's my question ( as if there weren't enough already) I did find a used factory shock today, they wanted a $75 core for my old one, which makes me want to ask if someone out there is rebuilding them? If not why a core charge, especially 75 bucks. So has anyone ever tried to repair one? Is someone already doing this? I had considered using my old one as a test subject until the steep core price came into play. Creole
  13. Wrench. Don't worry about it. We rode the trace yesterday and knocked around taking in the local sights in that area.. Spent a good chunk of our day around Dover, checking out the history there. Had a great day and really enjoyed Kentucky, most definately will come back and get further East. Anyway, the weather spooked us a bit. We really need to keep moving, so we dropped south and ended up In Jackson TN. Rain chances were lower and the days high looked a bit better to start shaking our way west. AS dry as our state has been..... we cant believe we're running from rain! LOL Enjoy that new job! Creole
  14. Had a long day of riding yesterday and made some good miles. They got much better once we got out of the Oklahoma wind. Arkansas weather is great right now and much better than we had hoped for. Hopefully, the weather in Kentucky will be as nice. We should make Paducah sometime this afternoon and slow down to take in some of the local sights! All suggestions welcome! Have a great day All!
  15. Wrench, I'll try to keep you posted, Our friends are doing most of the planning, I'm just gathering information to feed them. Would be nice to meet you too. djh3, So you know the red dirt huh? We have lived with it our whole lives although I'm originally from "Just south of Enid" , we had trees, red dirt and sand. Then moved on west to the woodward area and the trees and sand seemed to disappear. We like it though.....Kind of wish there were more trees and water though.
  16. Sure appreciate all the information! We probably wont be disappointed in the foilage even though the area has been dry. Western Oklahoma has been really dry the last two years, even the sage bruzsh is starting to wilt....thinking about selling the boat because the lakes almost don't have enough water to reach the boat ramps.... anyway, we will check into the routs suggested and see where the road takes us. This forum is great and obviously has great members. THANKS ALL Creole
  17. djh3, Thanks for the information. That sounds kind of cool to us too!, but we plan on having to bundle up a bit. Hope it's warmer than 28 in the mornings, but we'll make do. We're really looking forward to seeing the country out there, we mostly go west, have not been east of home much. Always wanted to just haven't had the opportunity. Now the opportunity is here and I'm sure the scenery will not disappoint even if a bit frosty. Thanks also for the weather channel tip, I'll check it out! Ky. Rider, Also a big thanks for the tips, we had planned on riding through the land between the lakes although we didn't really know what it was, and the information on the other routs, we will surely look up. It's nice to have a local's opinions and not get in a bind somewhere away from home! Nice of you to offer help when we're in your neck of the woods, never know when the unexpected will blind side you. As I said above, we are really excited to come out and see Kentucky. My wife has been doing some genealogy on our families the past couple of years and unbeknown to us, a good part of her family comes from the Kentucky area with some interesting history. We surely will not have time to follow the family tree this trip. I doubt our friends in toe will not find as much interest in it, but it will mean another trip out that way, hopefully in the near future! I'll have some motel time this week and the routs you mentioned will give me some research to do. Thank You for the input! Creole
  18. Friends are wanting to take a bike trip from Northwestern Oklahoma to about Mammoth Cave park in Kentucky in Late October this year. Sounds like a good time to us, should be nice colors in the trees and one last chance for a trip before the cold weather really sets in. We don't get that direction much and wondered if anyone had any advice to what the Kentucky weather typically is around the last of October. Also wondered if Local folks in that area had advice on things we should see / experience while in the area. Thanks much, Creole
  19. I didn't do it to mine but the po did. I think he got it right, nice rumble and still can hear the radio on the highway. Tried to attach a pic from iPhone can't get it ..... I'll keep trying....
  20. Just may have answered my own question. We went on a 700 mile knock around trip this weekend and when we were about 70 miles from home on our return trip, our fuel filter plugged off. We pulled over and the only thing we could do was pull it out and splice the fuel line back together with an ink pen barrel. After that on the way in the cruise maintained speed on the hills much better with 2 up and loaded for our weekend trip. I'm wondering now if the fuel supply was limited enough and lugging up the hills in OD such that the c.c. couldn't maintain speed and just kicked out. I've only had the bike a few months and didn't really have any way to judge the way it was acting, not to mention the C.C. didn't work when I bought it.
  21. The cruise on my 99 RSV kicks out on hills and more easily riding 2 up. It did not work when I bought the bike and I have been through all the switches and diagnostics and found a carb cable out of adjustment a long way. My real feeling now is that I still have an adjustment issue and wondered if anyone felt that I have things too tight or not tight enough on adjustment tolerances. It seems that the cc can't respond fast enough and kicks out because of not holding speed up or down hills. On flats it's fine riding solo is fine also even in some small hills. Thanks for your thoughts.
  22. Thanks for all the input. Pretty much what I expected, but didn't think it would hurt to ask!
  23. Quick question. We have a 99 venture and have talked with friends about a ride in the mountains of Colorado. Friends with fuel injected bikes have concerns about ours not being fuel injected. Surely it's not a big enough issue to be concerned with, but thought I'd ask if anybody had experience with this. Thanks for the input, Creole.
  24. Is it still possible to get a set of these armrests? If so how do I place an order? Thanks! Creole
