OK , lets get things going again. This is Roller Rink and my 86 Aspencade SEI, I finally got painted and put back together. Bought it as a skeleton bike with the Tupperware all in boxes ( Not labeled). I believe that was the last target. For the next target lets do You, your bike, and a painted statue of some type of animal like horse, cow or bulldog. Extra points if it's painted patriotic.

Deka ETX-18L purchased from YTX18L-BS Battery Worked very well for several years now and delivered in just a couple days to the door charged and ready to install. I installed the resistor in the probe line and everything works great. Bike always turned over slowly but started then installed 4 brush starter, Man what a defference. Highly recommend this upgrade better than upgrading the cables.

On bleeding your clutch. If you look on the left side of the bike on top on the middle gear cover is a small rubber square with a bump in the center. pry it up and you will find the clutch slave cylinder bleeder just under that rubber cover. Bleed it just like you would a brake system. Most likely you should start by cleaning out the clutch master cylinder and then add new fluid to the resiviour then open the bleeder on the slave cylinder hopefully with a tube into a glass jar and bleed till the fluid runs clearer like what your adding the system. Good Luck

You might need to replace the O rings under the intake boots. Helped mine out.

How to instal a tire with zip ties I would have never thought of this.
van avery replied to tufftom4's topic in Watering Hole
I used a 8" Jorgensen wood screw clamp to break the bead on the last tire I changed. Did not know about Zip tie method to remove off the rim. will need to try on the next tire replacement. -
Glad to have a chance to pay back all you have done for others and me over the years. Like has been said cast your bread on the water and see how much comes back in other ways. Believe me you have sure spread enough (?????) over the years. Thank you both for what you do. Marry Christmas and Happy New year

I agree with the idea to change to just a horse and Buggy. Things haven't moved for a month.

Getting harder to start
van avery replied to dna9656's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Is your battery real good. If not I'd try that first. If the voltage is a bit low these beasts will turn over but not start. Try a set of jumpers from the car ( do not run the engine on the car) and see if it doesn't start better. -
See section 3-11 in the manual. I supported the bike from above then "tilted the bike to the right (Sittting on bike.) THat way I did not have to replace the oil. IF i remember correctly when I replaced stator I took off both the middle gear cover and the stator cover and replaced both gaskets for those covers. THe foot gear shifter needs to be removed so mark the shaft and the lever such that you know what position to reinstall it later. The bolts will need to be removed on the front and back ( middle gears cover). I find it good to have a cardboard piece that I draw the outline of the cover and then punch the bolts thorugh it to make sure they get returned to the correct place. Note the is a brass washer on the bottom bolt on the middle gear cover that need to be returned to the correct place and may need to be replaced. The other end of the shifter shaft ( inside the side cover) will also need the lever arm removed if you are replacing the cover. Once you remove the stator cover make sure you keep the starter gears in the correct place... If you are removing and/ or replacing the stator you will need to remove the screws holding things inplace ( a hammer inpact is very usefull here) these are hard to remove. When you reinstall the cover make sure to use some gasket "goop" materials on the stator wires were they pass through the rubber seals on the rear wall of the stator cover and also on the wires were they pass throuth the rubber gaskets, this is a normal leak spot later. Reinstall guts and new gaskets and bolt up and torque per manual. Reinstall the shifter arms as they were. Hope that helps,

83 VR only getting 100 miles out of full tank.
van avery replied to gspullen's topic in Watering Hole
First thing I would do before you take the carb off is spray starting fluid around the intake manifolds and the YICS systems with the bike running. There are Orings below the intake manifolds that can and do go bad and you will have a vacuum leak. When you spray the starting fluid around the carbs and intakes if you have an increase in RPMs then you need to look for a leak in that area. The little plastic washers were avaliable for Skydoc_17 . -
Anybody want to post what they paid for their used bikes?
van avery replied to pbjman's topic in Watering Hole
About two years ago picked up this 87 Royale for $450 from a dealer. The PO had them "fix" and electrical problem and then they looked at the other things that need fixed and he just turned over the title. THe Carbs were off the bike in a box and one tore down. The plastic in several different places in the shop. Cleaned carbs, set valves upgraded spring on the clutch, found electrical problem they had "fixed", progressive springs, fixed air ride system, repaired plastic and repainted about half the bike, new tires and fluids and it's great bike now. Here some before and after pic's. -
Here is a previous post about the subject with some pictures of my bikes. The second two bikes in the pictures shift backward. Toee up to 1st and down to 2 nd , 3rd, 4th and 5th. On the last bike my 87 I tried to re arrage the arm on the shift shaft through the left cover and i could not get enough "Throw" to effectively change gears so I put it back to the original position. This is a pretty good thief deterent but if you have MBD (multipal bike disorder) you need to remember what bike your on. Word of caution the installation of a heal toe shifter on a 1st gen has been known to break the side case where the shift shaft goes through it. Don't jump on it too hard when shifting. As for adjustments you will just have to adjust it till it works correctly. BTW the lever on the side case on mine is up. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?p=753984#post753984 Good luck

Carb issue.... a little insight needed..
van avery replied to KIC's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I remember the little hole was to be at the 6 O'clock position ( towards the engine) I did find the following note that said it does not make any difference. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/archive/index.php/t-37273.html -
I believe my nephew in Michigan has one he is using in Michigan. He has a different attachment ( Snow Blower) and still works pretty good.

You might think about coming over to Squidley's Maintenance day this Saturday in Cleveland TX, a little NE of Houston. Should be nice weekend for a ride. Here is a link to the invite. Also look at the calendar for this weekend and sign up. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/sh...ad.php?t=88322 If you plan to pull and clean the carbs you might think about going over Friday evening so you have all day Saturday. If nothing else put about a half can of Seafoam per tank and run the beast over to Cleveland for a nice ride, weathers should be great. Bring some new spark plugs too, some times the junk coming out of the carbs deposits on the plugs. THis is a great way to meet other venture and bike riders and get alittle help and a great amount of Knowledge. The lunch fix'n is good to. Hope to see you there.

Compression test question
van avery replied to Patmac6075's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
When unscrewing and reinstalling the spark plugs a short piece of gas hose over the top of the plug will make it eaiser to screw in and out and helps make sure you don't cross thread them when reinstalling. -
Good job, that works. Now to find a historic bell.
