  1. Just picked up another project. A 2002 Midnight venture. Been sitting in shed for about 6 years. Can not remove the gas cap. I only received one key for the bike and it does work the ignition switch but not the gas cap or the bag locks either. It does go into the gas cap and only turns about 1/8 or less to the right. I have tried wiggling the key and the gas cap but have had no luck. I believe the latch mechanism is rusted. I removed the petcock ( completely plugged) and removed the remaining gas and got about a 1/2 cup of black residue. I have sprayed the key opening with BT blaster and I have currently turned the tank over and poured in about 3/4 quart of ATF to try to break it free. It has been soaking about 36 hours and no affect except some AFT coming through the cap. Looking for other suggestions? Does the ignition key also open the cap or is it normally another key?
  2. Sorry I've been gone moving son and family back from Florida to Texas. Yes the Rapid fix is sandable.
  3. I use stuff called rapid fix. https://www.amazon.com/RapidFix-RFX7121100-Dual-Adhesive-System/dp/B0021UMTZQ Stuff is amazing one tube is liquid "like super glue" second tube is a power and when the two come together it hardens immediately, and is hard. I have even used it to bond a wood dowel shaped to one of the studs to hold the side covers on about 4 years ago and it is still holding fine. The first time I used it was on a Goldwing saddlebag cover that was cracked about 1/2 way across and could not get it to stay together until I used the rapid fix. I do not recommend the new UV stuff.
  4. On a 1st gen it is the breather for the crankcase. It goes up to the bottom of the air box / air filter area.
  5. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?66468-Float-levels Haven't been on for a couple of days Looks like the earlier link I sent did not work. My puter has been having some issues lately. The above link should work???
  6. Not sure why the fuel pump is running after you turn off the bike it should not have any power ? Before you remove the carbs to check the level put the bike on center stand and buy some clear tygon tubing that will fit tightly over the drain hoses. Open the drain screw and you can check the level in the bike. See the following post if you set them at 1" per the following you will be pretty close. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/sh...8-Float-levels Good luck
  7. Before you remove it check that the carb bowl vent is open. I had a vent hose plugged and caused problems on an '85 I'm working on.
  8. Problem I just had with the 85 I'm working on is that the vent hose on #1 carb was plugged and the gas would shoot out the top of the air hole for the main jet. Since the air compressed in the top of the carb it would not fill the carb bowl leaving the float open and pressure up the system. Creating a spring out the top. If you take the air box off then blow on the carb vent lines you should get a gas "spring" out the top of the carb that you are blowing on ( at the air vent hole ) Don't know if that will help or not.
  9. Make sure you have a good battery and the connections are good. I have had a bad sound because of a bad battery before. If you jump start it to test it from a car or truck don't turn the car or truck on could overpower the bikes systems. IF the battery is not it, see above.
  10. Don't know if this will help but there is a project bike in Houston for sale with a hitch on it. You might contact the guy and buy the hitch or buy the whole bike and get many spare parts or even a repairable bike. https://houston.craigslist.org/mcy/6100925474.html
  11. That is a drain nipple. You use it to set the float levels . If you still have the piece you broke off you can repair it with Rapid fix. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Rapidfix-6121705-Dual-Adhesive-System-1-2oz/49773019?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=1235&adid=22222222227037263569&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=58991389058&wl4=pla-92126138258&wl5=1026879&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=112354589&wl11=online&wl12=49773019&wl13=&veh=sem See the following post if you set them at 1" per the following you will be pretty close. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?66468-Float-levels If you can find a good one they can be carefully removed and replaced.
  12. I had a 86 Goldwing with a bad fuse like that. Had 12 volt downstream of the fuse using a VOM to check. Friend told me to use a headlight to check and found that the fuse would not carry the load of the headlight. Replaced fuse and everything was OK. Good luck
  13. Just a thought. There is a brass hex plug on the back side of the float chambers item 27 O-RING 22U-14561-00-00 See http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/1987/XVZ13DT/CARBURETOR/parts.html If they are missing or in bad order the bowl will drain.
  14. Believe I'm going to give up on the class system. Currently I've slowed the leaks down, I pulled the solenoids cleaned and stretched the springs and re-soldered the controller several times. The system will work for a short time then give me a E1 or E4 it even gave me a E6 this evening. I have checked/ cleaned the connecters, run parallel wires, pulled the controller from My 87 ) and still it will not work consistently. I pulled the Schrader connections from my 83 parts bike, and I think several days working on it are enough. Had to install a spacer in the compressor ring ( worked great by the way) and system will pump up fine ( when it wants to). I begin to wonder if the pressure sensor has an internal problem. I have checked the voltage at several places per the manual and they seem to be right. Thanks
  15. Thanks, the gasket on the valve cover has a rolled area in the ubend area but I did not see any large leak from there. I'll get her fixed. Thanks again.
  16. Got to put a few miles on the 85 Royale I'm renovating. Have an oil leak that shows up after it warmed up. It is under the retanglaur cover on the side of the engine that covers the plug for the water jacket to the cylinders. Don't believe it's suppose to leak here. It the front right cylinder. Was warmed up and checking the carb sync and noticed the oil leaking from here. Don't believe that right any ideas? Pulled the cover off the right rear cylinder and did not have the same problem.
  17. I’m rejuvenation a 85 Venture Royale and having problems keeping the air pressure in the class systems. Both front and back shocks will lose about ½ of the pressure overnight. Finally tracked it down to the solenoids in the compressor manifold has slow/small leaks in all of the solenoids. I have already used the steel wool on the dowel rod to clean the small nipples and still have leaks. The bike was dormant for about 9 years. I already did the piston ring spacer and that worked great for the lack of compressor pressure. Looking at the little black rubber tips on the solenoids there is a small round indentation that I think is causing the leaks. I don’t see where you can buy replacement rubber tips for these. Does anyone have a source for them or a good way to refurbish? I heated one of them up carefully with a heat gun and tried sanding with 1000 grit sand paper and slightly stretching the spring and it seemed to help.
  18. I left them a short time ago. Tell them you are leaving and they will give you better deal for about a year. We have gotten calls and Emails wanting us to come back but I already switched to new Wave for internet and tv, from Direct and Windstream. Saving about $30/mo and went to 100 MBPS from 6 MBPS.
  19. I did not see that you sprayed starter fluid etc around the carb and intake boots to check for vacuum leaks. There are orings under the bottom carb boots that caused problems on my 87.
  20. Would be good to post picture if you can. Look on the right side of the bike below the brake pedal on the tube frame there should be a white tag with the vin number and the date of manufacture. 83 -85 are generation 1 mark 1's and then they are generation 1 Mark II's. Welcome to the site.
  21. If your battery is weak and not putting out enough voltage she will turn over but won't fire. Make sure the run switch is on the right handlebar. You might jump from a car battery. Do not start the car just hook up the cables. If the TCI is not getting enough voltage the bike won't fire.
  22. Good thing it was cold and you were bundled up. Could have been much worse. If you need any parts I still have the 83 parts bike in the shed if you need anything let me know. Jerry
  23. Heather, very sorry to hear about it. Prayers for a easy surgery and fast recovery. Glad it wasn’t any worse. Be careful making your way home.
  24. Pretty much stock 87. Added highway pegs, progressive shocks. fuse box and cup holder. Still using the original TCI.
