  1. I have an '89 Venture Royale..... working to put it on the road again. The main fuse box (near the battery) needs a cover (I will try to attached a picture of what I have). Are there any ready sources out there and/or does anybody have one? Thanks
  2. There are two master cylinders on the bike. The one on the handlebar works one of the front calipers. The rear master works the other front caliper and the rear caliper (as you mentioned). The rear master is the one I am having problems getting new fluid into.
  3. I have an 89 Venture Royale that I need to get going, or, stopping. I did many repairs on it a few years ago before we moved and I ran out of time. Winter is now coming and it is time to look at getting serious again... so, here goes.. Previously, I rebuilt the rear caliper and drained the brake fluid out of the rear master. Sadly, I was unable to get any more fluid in the rear master to get to enable a brake bleeding and thus to get it stopping correctly. For some reason, it would not accept anything into the rear master.. Is there a trick to this? Am I missing something obvious? Thanks
  4. I am working to try to get a 1990 Venture back on the road. I have it running and have rebuilt the calipers. Front brake is good and working. Rear/front split... not so much.... I tried to bleed the lines with no luck. I then emptied the fluid reserve by disconnecting the hose from the reservoir to the master and let the old fluid drain out (been about 8 years since the bike has been on the road). I then tried to refill the reserve through the 13mm bolt on the top although have been unable to get much fluid in the reservoir... and I am now not showing much fluid being pumped from the master through the lines. Have I gone horribly wrong somewhere? Why can't I get much fluid in the reservoir? Thanks
  5. I had not thought about taking it out that way... now... how to get that darned plug out of there. I am guessing that using a self taping screw will damage it. I have a new seat and filter and am not worries about hurting the one in there now... maybe I do just shove it out of there...
  6. Making some progress with this set of carbs although have not found that one of them is barely flowing fuel... am thinking that the little screen attached to the needle seat is clogged. Problem: how do I get the seat out of there - it appears to be jammed in there pretty good. Am I missing an obvious set screw??? I am afraid of pulling too hard and bending the little metal shaft which holds up the float. Help and guidance is appreciated.
  7. I did check the diaphragms and did not see anything wrong with them. Will fire it up and look down the barrels to make sure that they are all bouncing..
  8. yes... in the spirit of brevity I did not go into my status/repairs thus far with it. To date I have... a) replaced the starter b) Verified/set the valve clearance (turns out it was right on) c) verified compression and spark d) replaced the plugs.. setting correct gap e) tonight when it was running so badly I did pull both plugs that seem to be missing and verified that they are firing.. yessireee... they have fire f) rebuilt the carbs including new slow jets; reset float height and replaced the two lower rubber plugs in the bottom of the throttle bodies. Also replaced needles and seats. So.. looks like I need to sync the carbs... will do that and see what I get... will keep you all up to day
  9. I have a 1989 Venture Royale I am trying to resurrect. At this point it turns over and cranks up although runs very badly at idle and when revved. Seems to be missing on two cylinders. I have rebuilt the carbs and set everything correctly although have not synced the carbs yet.. From my days of working on Goldwings, I know that those carbs are real sensitive to be being synced up correctly. If not done right - those bikes will run badly.. much like the VR is doing for me now... So, how sensitive are these carbs? I don't want to run it long enough to get it hot if they are not that sensitive... if they are, I will warm it up property and get them synced... Thanks.
  10. I am working on the carbs of my 89 venture royale and have run into a little carb problem. Specifically one of them was leaking gas out of the little black nipple on the bottom of the carb. When I tested it to see if it was loose... the nipple broke off... as you can tell by the photo. Not sure what this does but my guess is that it is some sort of pressure valve that is broken or stuck open on this carb. Can I replace it (since the nipple is now broken) or am I screwed? Advice is welcome.. thanks
  11. I am working to try to get this Venture back on the road. While I have the carbs apart is there a simple way to measure float height - like relative to an internal part of the carb? Part of me hates to try to "jam a clear piece of tubing into the drain plug" approach although will do that if I need to. Advice and/or pictures are welcome. Thanks
  12. I have an 88 1300 that I am working on. I had to remove the radiator and would like to replace the water hoses when I put it back together although do not see any listed on ebay (okay, I am a slave to ebay). Are they a standard size (aka can I just go to the autoparts store and pick up some straight hoses or do I have to pay the price for yamaha ones? Thanks
  13. okay, just so I have my facts straight... the 2nd gen bikes were produced between 96-01 and are called the Royal Stars, correct? If I put the money down for a starter want to make sure it is the right one. Thanks...
  14. how do I know which one it is? Also, if I buy a new one (like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ricks-Motorsport-Electric-Starter-61-412-/301781990886?hash=item46439bbde6:g:kjgAAOSwl9BWMXzF&vxp=mtr) how do I know it is a two or a four brusher??
  15. I have a Yamaha manual for my 89 Venture and find it mostly useless (guess I am too used to Clymer books which give you step by step instructions). Is there a better manual out there for these bikes? Also, looks like I need to either replace or rebuild the starter. Looks like I need to remove the radiator; remove the two bolts on the starter and pull it free - and then figure out how to rebuild it. Are there some obvious tricks I am missing on it?
