  1. For north team planning; I can easily get MD and DC. We are planning a trip mid May and will be starting in MD, then VA, TN, AL, MS, LA, FL, GA, SC, NC, TN, VA and then back home to MD. Looking forward to playing. Think this will take a fair bit of logistics\organization to get'er done.
  2. The only mods I'm prepared to do is how big of a check to write the shop. This work is way beyond what I'm interested in taking on myself. Gonna have them replace neck bearings and do most everything else for major service including valve check\adjust at the same time.
  3. Thanks for posting a link to that old thread. Exactly the information I was looking for. One interesting thing from the other thread, Rick mentions that the correct spring rate for the RSV is 1.2kg/mm. The tech at my shop asked me about my riding style, weight etc and came up with 1.0kg/mm. 20% is a significant difference. I'll need to have a follow up chat with the tech to explain how he arrived at his number. I played with http://www.sonicsprings.com/catalog/calculate_spring_rate.php?osCsid=940b2e50ea2dc55658f4ae10fe4204d4 and according to my (and bike) weight it is 1.2. Wonder if the calculation is different for Race Tech springs?? I'll post an update after talking to my tech. In the meantime, others experience and opinions are welcome. Thanks, Dan
  4. To balance the teams, put me down for North. Looking forward to it.
  5. Hey all, Does anyone have either first hand knowledge or an opinion on http://racetech.com/html_files/venture.html? The new spring is fairly straight forward, but this cartridge emulator concept is new to me. http://www.racetech.com/images/FEGV2page6L.jpg I've been chatting with the main tech at my local independent bike shop about improving my bikes handling. In addition to leveling links (which I've got ready to go on), he recommends both springs and this emulator. The shop works on all types of bikes, but is most known for sport bike\track bike work. Any comments would be appreciated. What do y'all think? Cheers, Dan P.S. Not sure that I need my venture to every be "flic-able"
  6. I bought $5 worth of tickets for the first time in my life, haven't checked them yet... But sadly I got them close to my home in Montgomery County.
  7. With all the kids I've got to put through college, my retirement plan is to live long enough to be a burden on my children.
  8. I gotta agree with Joe, there just ain't no way I am in any of those pictures. Since this is an interesting target that everyone should have a decent chance to get, we should let it stand. Wouldn't be right me getting credit for an obvious misfire. Looking forward to seeing what others can make of this one... And don't think I'm not planning another run at it for myself. I have a few other viable options thanks to google, so if you want to get this for yourself you better hurry! Cheers and good luck.
  9. Sometimes I'm a bonehead. Sure am glad I don't need to hunt to put food on the table. We would go hungry on day's like today. It was in the low 40's here today. Perfect day to sneak out for a nice ride during lunch and bag the current target. I had a nice little route planned that would take me to the main entrance to the Smithsonian National Zoo, where there are two huge lion statues. The construction detours should have warned me it wasn't meant to be. By the time I got there I was running late and in a hurry to get back. So I parked where I wasn't supposed to (notice the no idling sign in one of the pictures) to snap a few real quick without checking closely to make sure I actually met the challenge. Here are the results. You will notice that I am not in any of them! I thought I was in the one with the mirror, but alas I am not. So this one is still up for grabs. Guess somedays you just come up empty. Cheers http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z351/danzoom/IMG_20120220_134204.jpghttp://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z351/danzoom/IMG_20120220_134153.jpghttp://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z351/danzoom/IMG_20120220_134251.jpg
  10. No idea, I was only at that speed for a minute. That was way outside my comfort zone. My guess is that it wouldn't be very good. Cruised most of the way at about 70 (65 is the limit).
  11. Tomorrow is the wife's B-day. It made it up to the high 40's today so it was a good day to head north 100 miles into PA to buy her present. I rode it home. It sure is a lot more fun to ride than I thought it would be. Purely for research purposes, I took up to 100 on the highway just to make sure everything was ok. Never imagined scooters with that much get up and go, and it is a very comfortable ride. Anyone else have experience with Honda Silver Wings? So far I'm very impressed. Cheers, Dan http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z351/danzoom/Scoot1.jpghttp://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z351/danzoom/scoot2.jpg http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z351/danzoom/scoot3.jpg
  12. Well done! Wet snow kept me off the bike all weekend. What is the next target?
  13. I found the video interesting and certainly understand his point of view. Although shooting the laptop might have been therapeutic for him, it isn't the way I would handle it. Forcing her to donate it along with her cell phone to a charity would have taught her even more. Turn her life lesson into a win for someone else less fortunate, maybe even teaching her another lesson in the process. My two cents...
  14. Here is the video. Not very good publicity and a little over dramatic in my opinion. [ame= ] [/ame]

    first aid CPR

Very timely post.. I just re-certified basic first aid, CPR and use of AED machine today. Amazing how what they teach has changed over the years. Hope to never have to need it. As bikers that ride with others, we should all be as prepared as we can be.
  16. In my opinion, doing a few laps on the Dragon is a must do for every biker. It definitely is as others have said, very technical and can get crowed during summer weekends. As a passenger, my wife thought it was rather boring though. A small group of us rented a very nice house\cabin just outside of Robbinsonville NC for 3 nights last May as part of a 5 day, 1730 mile trip. We spent one day doing the Dragon Cherohala, and the rest of the time exploring many other great rides. There are so many outstanding routes and interesting places that are at least as good and in many cases better than the Dragon in that area. If you focus exclusively on the Dragon, you will miss out on so much more that the area has to offer. A few must dos in the area: - Bridal Veil Falls - Cherohala Skyway - Fontana Damn - All or part of http://www.moonshiner28.com/ The wife has a blog where she writes about many of her adventures from the back seat.. Here are a links to her notes for some of the days of our last trip out that way... http://backseatview.wordpress.com/2011/06/07/060711-nc-road-trip-day-2/ http://backseatview.wordpress.com/2011/06/08/060911-nc-road-trip-day-3/ http://backseatview.wordpress.com/2011/06/26/062611-nc-road-trip-day-4/ http://backseatview.wordpress.com/2011/06/26/062711-nc-road-trip-day-5/ http://backseatview.wordpress.com/2011/06/27/062811-nc-road-trip-behind-the-scenes/
  17. Agree. I've found interesting places that are practically in my own backyard that I never would have known existed if it weren't for this game. Glad to have another participant. Good luck!
  18. Active or not, doesn't matter to me. An old inactive one would probably be a more interesting building.
  19. Occasionally I do get to take a lunch break.. Working where I do on the northwest border of DC and MD, it is only a 5 minute ride to some interesting roads. Stealing away for a 45 minute ride is a great way to break up the day and help clears my head to face the afternoon. I am lucky.
  20. The next target is; you, your bike and a court house. (getting arrested is not required) Happy hunting.
  21. Was a great day so I ducked out of work for a quick spin during lunch and took these pictures. This is from an overlook on the George Washington Parkway, overlooking the Potomac river from VA with DC on the other side. Not as beautiful as normal this time of year due to very low water level and all the trees are bare. It is fairly high up. Have a look and let me know if this qualifies. Cheers, Dan http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z351/danzoom/IMG_20120207_123820.jpg http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z351/danzoom/IMG_20120207_123836.jpg
  22. Thanks for all the great ideas and helpful info. We are very much looking forward to this trip. I'll be sure to post an update of our plan as we get closer to the date and finalize things. I'll also definitely share pictures. One of the reasons the wife prefers to be a passenger than riding a bike of her own is so that she is free to take all the pics she wants from back there. Cheers, Dan.
  23. I've never heard of this road before. Just checked it out online. From what little I've read so far, it looks like a great motorcycle route and running it from south to north end could easily fit into our return trip. Thanks for the suggestion. This will most likely be added to our itinerary.
  24. The wife and I are planning a 10 or 11 day ride from the Washington DC area to New Orleans and back the end of May and could use some advice\suggestions on routes and things to do while there. We've never been down that way before. All we have decided so far is to head from home to the north end of the Blue Ridge Pkwy, taking approximately 2 days to ride to the southern end. We will then either take a quick lap on the Dragon (been there done that, as a passenger the wife finds it boring) or the Cherohala. From here we haven't decided anything. Suggestions on an interesting route from the Dragon\Cherohala area on down to New Orleans would be most appreciated. Also, suggestions on things to see and do while there along with best places to stay would be great. Thanks very much in advance for your thoughts. Cheers, Dan
