  3. Hi, I am going to order a set of these lights right away. I have one question just to double check. I have an 04 RSV with the Yamaha driving light bar and lights. Will these lights be a simple swap out of the Yamaha lights or is there more to it than that? Thanks and sorry if this is already covered. Chris
  4. Thanks for all the comments and information. I had a Tulsa Tall on my 2001 RSV and liked it as did my wife. It gave her better protection. Has anyone here ever used a Tulsa and or have any comments? I prefer to be able to look through my windshield, not over it. I'm 5' 10". I've had some pretty bad experiences in the rain as a consequence so that is why I am trying to get some information before I purchase a shield for my 2004 RSV. I think the previous owner of the bike either cut the stock one way down or purchased a short Yamaha shield because I get a lot of wind buffeting on my helmet which I don't want. I don't wear a full face helmet. My wife and I wear 3/4 helmets. I am thinking of the Clear View XX tall that is 1" taller than stock. Comments questions would be most welcome. Chris
  5. I was wondering how tall the stock shield is? The former owner of my new to me 2004 Midnight Royal Star Venture cut the stock shield down and I get a lot of helmet air when I am riding. Yamaha Canada wants an outrageous price for one of theirs. I did look at a Tulsa screen and it looks like a good replacement. It is taller and wider, something I think my wife will appreciate.   7. Hi I have read several posts about the K&N air filters. I am assuming the only advantage to going to a K&N type filter is that it is reusable and thus in the long run cheaper than replacing the stock filter over the life of the bike. Is there any other advantage? Besides all the hubris and claims, does the K&N actually have an impact on HP all by itself? I find that quite hard to believe so if anyone has any actual hard, factual information they would like to share I would be happy to hear it. Thanks in advance Chris
  8. I was wondering what you cruise at on the highway when you are touring? All state and provincial speed limits aside; what do you normally cruise at or what is the RSV capable of cruising at for sustained periods of time? I like to cruise between 130 and 140 kph on the superslab and about 120 130 on the secondary roads. Is the RSV capable of 160 kph+? That would be 100mph+ or is that really pushing it's limits? I guess my second question is passing. Do you have to down shift in order to pass comfortably and if so does she have enough grunt to get around traffic with ease?   9. Seaking, I agree 100 percent with you on that. It is to be noted that the GWRRA is the only organization I know that has such a developed rider training program. I think that any bike in the hands of a skilled rider will make the bike look like magic and also make other bikes that are no less competent look poorly. My point is that a lot of people who buy and ride Wings are intimidated by it and often are fearful of pushing the Wing and using it's unique abilities. I know two local Wing riders who refuse to ride their bikes in the mountains or on any twisty roads. I also know a Wing rider who was involved in a serious accident on a certain Alberta highway that could have been avoided if he had the least little bit of an idea of how to counter-steer. I will also acknowledge that can also be said of a lot of people who ride other brands of motorcycles as well. I have a great book that is dog eared and marked from using to practice, practice, practice my riding. It is called Total Control by Lee Parks. I also had the privilege of taking a number of advanced rider courses sponsored by the GWRRA and the honor of being coached and taught how to run curves by a gentleman who was 76 years old at the time and once rode for the Honda Goldwing Phoenix Precision team. I swapped bikes one day with a buddy who rides an 1800 Wing and when we stopped to get back on our own bikes his comment was, "Wow. I'm really surprised at how your RSV handles and the power it has.   10. Well, With no ill will intended. At one point I had my 1800 Wing and 2001 RSV sharing parking space in my garage. I ran a little test of my own, entirely subjective of course but still my .02 cents for what's it worth minus the pejorative finger waving. The only thing the Wing was better at was speed. No argument there. It never out performed my RSV. Never. The Wing weighs more, got pushed around more in the wind and following a semi and was much more difficult to maneuver in parking lots. One place I always laughed at the Wing riders were tight turns. The folks I rode with either dropped their Wing attempting the turn, or went past the tight turn until they could find a place to turn around and approach the entrance I am referring to from the south. (The access turn into the Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort on Kootney Lake, BC.) if approaching from the north. Too funny. lol... Everyone makes riding choices. If you prefer the Wing awesome. I respect your choice. Chris

  12. Hi, I have a set of new tires to put on my bike but of course the roads are snow and ice covered but I would like to get this done before the spring time rush. How difficult a job is it to remove the wheels for a mechanically challenged person to perform? thank you in advance Chris
  13. Lately I have read a number of posts about individuals regretting switching from the 1st Gen Venture to the 2nd Gen Venture. I owned 4 1st Gen Ventures. An 84, an 87, an 84 straight Venture then another 84 Venture Royale. I loved the bike. My wife and I road from Windsor, Ontario to BC on it and other long distance trips as well. Now I am on my second, 2nd generation bike. I came back to it because I enjoy/ed the ride so much. Yes it is a bit top heavy but other than that I can't think of any reason why I would go back to a 1st Gen Venture. I am curious to ask how many people here have come from a 1st Gen and have no regrets? Quite simply, I love my RSV. Chris in Red Deer, AB
  14. Thanks for the interesting comments. My wife's 2002 Pontiac Grande Am is dead on as was my 2008 Honda Ridgeline. My 2011 VW Jetta is also out by about 10 percent. Chris
  15. My 2001 speedometer was out by about 10 kilometers per hour. Now that I have a 2004 RSV I checked it with my GPS and it is also out by 10 per cent as well. It is 10 percent below what is indicated on the gauge. Has Yamaha not addressed this or is there a fix for this other than just accepting it and adjusting accordingly? My 1800 Wing was always dead on with the GPS. Thanks for any comments or advice. Chris
  16. OK, thanks everyone for the information. Here is my take so far combing what I have read searching under "headlight replacement" and the information from you guys. First, my hands are way to small and my older grandson wants waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much money to attempt to do it for me. My younger grandson is willing to do it; but on the way to the bulb housing he would no doubt get distracted and end up disconnecting several critical components along the way, pulling out a handful of spaghetti like wiring and saying, "Papa, did I do it righ?" to which I would reply, yes, yes that's good, now please come out and let Papa try again. To which he would reply, "Papa, why are you crying?":crying: But I digress... When I go in from the left side, I can only just get my fingers on the bulb housing but I can't apply any force. I notice that there is a rubber seal/something?? all around the bulb itself. Does this have to be removed first? BrakePad in your picture what does image one represent? My understanding is it is the back of the bulb with the three wires coming off or out of it. In your instructions you state, "Review the plug wiring and then go in with your right hand and pull it out? Pull what out? Is this the rubber gasket that is around the bulb that has to be pulled out? In image two you are applying the prongs of the bent coat hanger to the edges of the headlight clamp and then I assume you turn it CCW 90 degrees but you state to press inward with the coat hanger and then pull back. Again, I still don't see what you do with the rubber gasket/ring/whatever. Do you first have to remove the rubber moulding and how do you remove it? Here is my understanding 1) Pull off rubber gasket/seal/moulding/whatever Does it come straight off or do you have to turn it in a specific direction? 2)Use coat hanger prongs to press inward then pull back. This releases the bulb and it's housing. 3) carefully pull back and expose bulb. 4) remove existing bulb replace with new bulb. 5) put back in. 6) use coat hanger prongs to press spring back in place. Do you have to twist it at all? I have read in manual and from several posts that something (I asume this spring clip needs to be rotated CCW 90 degrees to remove and then rotated 90 degrees CW to replace? Boy this sounds like quite the process just to replace a simple headlight bulb. Thank you for your help and additional comments.
  17. I'm trying to take out my headlight bulb to replace it but I can't figure how to reach it. I've read the manual, read some of the posts and am still confused. Do you reach it from the front side or the back side? The front headlight assembly has one screw at the bottom. If you remove this does it allow you to slide out the headlight assembly and access to the bulb or do you try to reach in from the back amidst the maize of wires and try to access it from there? Thank you for your help in advance. Chris

  19. Hi SilvrT, No at least not so far. I have only had one ride on the bike and I had no popping or backfiring. From what I read it sounded like the mod did a number of things. Quicker throttle response at all RPMs, especially down low More pull at small throttle openings allowing higher gear usage around town Better gas mileage But I think I won't do it, I will just leave it as it is. I enjoyed my 01 without any mods so think I will leave it. Chris
  20. Hi everyone, As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I purchased a new to me 2004 Royal Star Venture from a person in Calgary, Alberta. He is the second owner and when I asked him who he bought the bike from, he couldn't remember. I have an idea, but I'm not sure. I am just wondering on the off chance that someone in Calgary might know and be able to pass the information to me in a private email. All I want to know is if the bike ever had the valves and brake/clutch/ fuel filter changed. The bike has 52, 500 kilometers on it and I would like to know so I can get that scheduled to be done. The fluids all look clean so I am wondering. I realize it might be like looking for a needle in the haystack but I thought I would try. Thanks for your help. Chris in Red Deer, Alberta

Hello, I have searched and read a number of threads and articles on horsepower and was wondering what opinions are on the easiest way to maybe gain a few HP that are easy and don't involve a lot of expense or time.   24. Could anyone please tell me what size of dowel or plug is required to block off the AIS systems? I have read the articles but not sure what size plug is required. Thank you in advance Chris
