  1. I've owned two goldwings, a 1500 and an 1800. The RSV is such an overwhelmingly better ride that I would never go back to a wing. The only better thing the wing has is more HP. Big deal. The RSV is more than adaquate. The only people who would look twice at a Goldwing is another goldwing owner. They are so ho-hum that they don't even deserve a second glance unless of course you are looking at the generic OEM teddy-bear that goes with the bike.
  2. I had my Master Card compromised last year when I was ordering a number of parts for my 04 from a number of sources across the US. It turns out somehow someway someone got a hold of everything including the 3 digit security code on the back. Everything was delivered to an address in Hanoi. I'm still fighting with the Bank of Montreal over it. So what we did was we got another card, a Visa card with a $500.00 limit on it and that is what we use exclusivley for ordering anything online and it is a chip card so it never leaves the house. I can't believe how stupid the banks are for dreaming up that idea. That should be a no brainer. RF chip = transmitter = detectable = stealable. Chris in RD AB
  3. I just completed my second three day trip into the Kootney Lake area of BC. Three days of absolutely perfect riding on Top rated Destination Highways in British Columbia's Kootney Lake area. I have to say that my 2004 Midnight Royal Star Venture ran flawlessly. I live in Red Deer, Alberta and the mountains are not that far away but I usually try to make this run around Kootney Lake at least twice a riding season. We were on highway 3, 3A and 6 and we pretty much had the roads pretty much to ourselves there was very little traffic. My friend rides a highly modified 2009 Yamaha Raider. My RSV handled awesome. I set up my suspension for riding in the twisties and we I had an unbelievable ride. Three back to back days of riding from about 8:00am to 6:00pm each day. We spent two nights in Creston, BC as our base and I realize that 1800kms isn't that huge a distance but boy did we have fun. At one point my friend commented that he was surprised that I could stay with him in the curves and while passing but when I told him that the RSV comes from the Vmax heritage he understood. I have had a 1500 Wing and an 1800 Wing but man do I love my RSV. I'm in no way bashing or bad mouthing my former wings, just that I far and away prefer my RSV. So totally comfortable and a lot of people were shocked at how she handled and moved through the twisties. I just had to comment again on what an awesome ride the RSV is. Chris in Red Deer, AB
  4. Just a comment since I started this thread last week. The lights were wired incorrectly by the dealer. I installed a relay under the seat exactly as shown in the above schematic. I tapped into the red wire with the yellow stripe and also installed a toggle switch So now I can have my driving lights on with either the low beam or the high beam as I wish. I don't turn them on until the bike has started and I'm ready to drive away. My driving lights are 50 watt halogen lights and they provide great night time light. I also have the Buckeye Performance high output stator. All in all it works great.
  5. Gary, that's awesome dude! That's exactly what I have done only I used a straight pin to test for +12vdc. Now I just have to finish the wiring, test it and slap it all back together again. I've parted the faring so many times now I can do it with my eyes closed. And you were right, taking the tank off was dirt easy even for a non mechanical guy like me. Chris
  6. Hi Ruffy, Yup. I forgot to mention that I'm running it through a toggle switch. Chris
  7. My understanding is if you use a relay, and I am, then it only draws about 100 milliamps.
  8. I have my bike all torn apart, gas tank removed, faring parted. But I can't find the red wire with a yellow stripe on it anywhere to save my life. Here is a picture of the wires that are outside the harness. The first picture shows no red wires. The second picture shows a neutral coloured connector with one red wire with a yellow stripe in it. This is the only red/yellow wire I can see anywhere. Could someone please confirm if this is the correct wire to tap into in order to have my driving lights on at all times? Thank you in advance Chris in Red Deer, Alberta
  9. Gary, Great explanation. Thank you. I will make a print of that and keep it with my growing binder of RSV notes. Chris in Red Deer, Alberta
  10. Hi Goose, My switch is just a simple push button on/off switch. It only has two spade connectors on it and there is no information on it at all. Chris
  11. Awesome information Bobby! Thank you! Now I just need to wait until my wife is home to identify the correct wire for me. I'm colour blind. Chris
  12. Hi all! I have a really dumb question and I know it touches on my post yesterday about relays and driving lights but at the same time it is separate. Forum monitor please forgive me. I bought a relay and all of the parts I need to put a relay in. I printed a couple of different posts that had schematics and instructions. I purchased a simply on off push button type switch that is more robust than the one that comes with the Yamaha light kit. I have a couple of questions; (1) what is the difference between a simple switch that has two connect points and one that has three? Also I want to hook my lights up so they are on all the time whether I am using low or high beam. The official Yamaha instructions says" On all the time: Splice red power lead to red w/Yellow stripe lead (in natural nylon multi connector) My assumption is that what they are referring to is what the instruction I have read call "Switched Power" and that one wire goes from here to one terminal on the switch and one wire goes from terminal 86 of the relay on the coil side to the other connect point on the switch. Sorry, schematics confuse me. My apologies for the dumb question. Any help is appreciated Chris in Red Deer
  13. I just wanted to say thank you to all the people who responded and gave advice. I did this yesterday. When I split the faring the little plastic fuse holder with the glass fuse in it that Yamaha supplies had melted and burnt out. Since I already had a full tank of gas I cut and then soldered in an automotive blade fuse just above the headlight adjust so it is accessible if it blows on the road and I will put the relay in after I run my tank down and can remove the tank. Chris
  14. Thank you for the information and advice. I will give it a whirl tomorrow. kind regards all Chris
  15. I turned my bike on yesterday and the driving lights wouldn't come on at all. The dealer did the install back last December and they didn't put the switch in as per the Yamaha instructions. I'm almost certain that the fuse inside the faring is blown and that I have a pinched wire either in the centre of the bar mount or when the bike is swung all the way out in one direction. I did notice that on the right hand side when I swing it out to expose it, that a blue wire looked pinched. Today I purchase all of the necessary parts to install a relay and a switch. I have been reading lots of the posts on this subject and my one question at this point is do I have to take the gas tank off in order to do this? One post with pictures says that the gas tank has to be removed. Has anyone installed a relay and a switch without having to remove the gas tank? Thank you in advance Chris
  16. I notice that my left hand driving light is pointing considerably lower than my right one. Can anyone tell me if there is a way to adjust them and what the process is? Thank you in advance Chris
  17. Hi, I purchased a Battery Bug from Argus Analyzer and I wrote them an email yesterday with a question concerning my Battery Bug that I installed on my 04 RSV. Here is Jim's response. He responded within 24 hours of my initial question and the article he attached is that written by Stu Oltman, the editor of Wing World Magazine. I just had to share that with the good folks on the forum here. His timely response and the article he sent me answered all my questions and alleviated any of my worry or anxiety about the operation of the Bug. All in all I think they are great folks to deal with. I don't know how to attach a word doc or I would put it in here. I don't have a date for the month the evaluation was written up in Wing Word Magazine but I know Stu and he wrote an excellent review. Chris in Red Deer, Alberta Chris - Remember the ‘Bug is showing “Cranking Health” not the “Battery Life”. Think of Cranking Health as the battery’s ability to do its job of starting the engine. There are many factors affecting that ability. Chiefly - the SIZE of the battery. A tiny battery and a HUGE engine will give a low Cranking Health % even when the battery is new - because the battery will have a hard time cranking that engine. In addition – cold temperatures will affect cranking health in a negative way. Cold temps make it harder to crank the engine both because the battery is cold AND the engine oil is cold an sluggish. Remember also that the %-age on the display ONLY goes down. It is displaying the WORST start and therefore the number will never go up again. Expect the % cranking health displayed to steady itself after a few weeks, then slowly descend over time. Attached is an article that you might find interesting as well. Please let me know if you have more questions! Jim Argus Analyzers 401-965-4569
  18. Hi Ruffy, I went out for a ride this afternoon, about 100 kilometers. When I started the bike the bug showed 94% as opposed to yesterday when I started it and it said 97%. When I got home I did as you said, disconnected the bug for a minute and then hooked it back up and it is back up to 100%. I don't understand the electrical theory behind this. Why would it loose 3% for two days in a row that I started the bike and went for a ride, and then when I reset it it went back to 100% battery capacity? It is charging at 14.2+ volts all the time I am on the road riding. Is there a point at which it stabilizes and then will stay at a certain percentage for a period of time or can I expect to loose 3% every day that I start the bike and go for a ride? If I loose 3% each new day I start the bike then in 33 days my battery will be down to 0% capacity. Like I said, I don't understand what is happening with the battery and the bug monitoring the battery. Chris
  19. Thanks for the information guys. I haven't really taken the bike out for a long run yet since I installed the new battery last Friday but the short rides I did take the Bug tells me the battery is charging at 14.2 volts while I am driving and it is holding steady at 97%. So I think everything is just fine. Chris
  20. I installed a Battery Bug voltage meter along with a new Deka battery on Friday last week. When I installed it the Battery monitor told me it was at 100% capacity. I keep it on the Battery Tender all the time. This morning when I went out to the garage it was reading 99% and I took the bike for a short ride and now it is down to 97% but is reading 14.2 volts charging. I'm wondering if this is normal or if there is something wrong? I installed a new high output stator two weeks ago as well. Is this normal? Or should it say 100% for quite a length of time before it begins to tell me that the battery capacity is going down or could I have a charging problem? Thank you for your comments and help. Chris
