1. Page 6-16 in the Yamaha service manual. It is the job of the two air cut-off valves to shut off air flow in the ais system during deceleration. This is to prevent popping in the exhaust. They are controlled by two vacuum hoses. One at the base of a left and one at the base of a right carburetor. Make sure those vacuum hoses are good. If you are getting popping either one of the cut-off valves is not working properly or air is coming in somewhere else. If the engine is stock this sounds like a warranty issue to me. If the exhaust has been modified start checking there. Mike
2. Hunting is not allowed in State Parks here either. Wild game are present everywhere from rural to urban environments. So state firearm preemption applies to state parks. Different places different rules. Mike
3. Although frowned upon I believe it would have been legal in Washington State Parks. So long as it stayed in the scabbard. You might check with OpenCarry.org to see what is legal in your area. Mike

5. Ok. To be serious for a second. There were no serious issues with the 2008 Venture. If if if it needed the cylinder head bolts re-torqued that would have been done a long time ago or it would be leaking coolant all over the place. Check the brake pads. They do sometimes wear out. Depending on miles sometimes heavier clutch springs are in order. Both minor fixes. These bikes are a great ride. Enjoy it. Mike
6. Pre trip jitters. Mike
7. Yea. Wouldn't want to void the warranty on a 99 Venture. Mike
8. It was a dark and stormy night....... Mike
9. If you want to mount it on your 2nd gen put it under the fairing. Instead of using the headlight use an on-off switch. A startled dear usually looks for the fastest, clearest, easiest escape route. Often that is the open space on and across the roadway. They really have no concept of vehicle speed. Although they may see you, get curious and stop for a look. Personally I use a loud radio. Hopefully they will hear me approaching and not be so startled. Mike
10. Yes the recall was for bikes manufactured in 07 which included some early 08 units. Ask me how I know. Go ahead ask. Mike

Vapor locked

Try this. Disconnect the vent hose from the tube on the tank. (Not a full tank) Take the bike for a ride and see if the problem is still present. If it is gone the issue is somewhere in the hose etc. If the problem is still there then the tank portion is plugged. Mike

The fuel tank uses a separate venting system. There is a breather hose that connects to the tank under the ignition switch / tank top cover. To the right of the filler neck. If this vacuum hose becomes blocked you will get vacuum build up in the tank. Make sure the hose is not soft and collapsing and that it flows freely. Mike
16. These bikes are oil type sensitive. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a common denominator. Some are happy with synthetics some like mine hate it. So for me it is Yamalube. Mike
17. Well all I can say is at least our friends up north don't have to worry about crooked insurance companies. Their's is regulated by the government. Mike
18. I have to say the people on this forum are pretty good with their advice. When I first got my bike I heard things like 'better mileage in fourth than fifth' 'keep the revs up' etc. I Pooh poohed all of this because everyone knows you want to keep the revs down for better mileage. That's what overdrive is all about after all. Well they were right. I was wronnnn. Not right So I set about discovering why. Here is what I found. Running at low rpm actually is lugging this engine (whether you feel it or not) and fuel economy suffers. Keeping the engine rpm up in the power band improves responsiveness and fuel economy. So in many cases fourth will provide better economy than fifth. If climbing hills or accelerating a higher rpm helps the engine provide more torque to the whee quickerl. And since you have to crank the throttle less better fuel economy. Is there a limit. Yes of course. Find it and you will get the most out of your bike. Mike
19. I have the V-max gearing and stock ignition module in my bike. I still hit 90 mph in third gear. The sound of the engine rpm is different for every bike. It is just a matter of what you get used to. For me I had a real disconnect between my Venture's sound and what I was used to until I opened up the muffler a little bit. Then all was well in the sound department. So long as your clutch is not slipping or some other mechanical problem. You will get used to the sound. Just apply time. Mike
20. Welcome BRandx51. You will enjoy your Venture. And you will also find a ton of information on this forum. Mike
21. The rev limiter replaces the tachometer. Mike
22. Letting it go is not a good idea. This is a part you need to locate. Mirrors magnets bore scope. If it is somehow in the engine the damage will be significant. Mike
23. Congrats Larry. You will enjoy the bike immensely. Mike
24. I went the other way. I converted the trailer to work with the Japanese style lights on the bike. I made the brake / turn lights brake only and added turn signals as a separate light. So I now have tail and brake original red and turn signal amber add on. Mike
