  1. I'm PUMPED !! My Wife and I just got back from riding the BRP from Cherokee to just North of Asheville. What a ride !! We just bought the 02 Midnight V a month ago and took the country roads all the way to Cherokee, then Tues took a ride on the BRP, and today came home. This was my wife's first long Motorcycle ride in her life. She was impressed with the Venture handling of the mountain roads. It might have been the driver (me) cautiously navigating and driving like a Grandpa, having white knuckles around the switchbacks and all that stuff. We enjoyed waving at all the other bikers and couldnt help being a little proud of our new toy. My wife stated "we need some biker clothes". Yeah, we don't look the part. We look like country come to town, but it was a blast even though. The Temp was in the upper 50's in the morning on the BRP and we wore jackets to keep warm. The MV I bought has Bub exhaust which sound pretty cool in the tunnels, especially when I laid into the gas. I saw two other Venture riders at a rest area but couldnt get their attention before they left. We had such a great time I had to tell the people here about the cool weather on the parkway. Thanks a bunch to Sleeperhawk and the Mech for helping me before my trip. Hopefully I will be able to meet others around the site and maybe go to Vogel. We'll see ya on the road...
  2. My 2 cents...Like said before, stay off I-95. It's horrible. HWY 17 North is jammed with traffic, expecially from Charleston up past Myrtle beach. Charleston is crowded and I wouldnt go downtown, However it would be better on a Sat. or Sun morning and it would be very cool to travel across the new Bridge (its huge). We do have some really nice country roads that have nice little towns along the way. Dont plan on making good time though. Its all about cruising and seeing the country sites for me anyway. I absolutely hate riding on intersates. In SC, I would stay away from the beach areas and head for the hills. I guess that doesnt help you complete the big trip. Sorry.
  3. I looked for the right bike for over a year, and last month just settled on a used 02 midnight . Not event the Yamaha dealers here in Columbia, sc keep Ventures on the showroom floor. I was looking for another helmet at the Honda shop and there sat a Venture. It was an 04 with 48K miles, silver in color. Not that much goodies, but they wanted $9,999. I'm sure they will come down some. I thought it too high of a price. Its just my luck though to see one just after I bought mine. I'll also look into this one if someone wants.
  4. WOW, I missed the fun.. I think there's a shutter bug in the Sleeperhawk family.
  5. Sounds like the night my wife came to your house and picked me up..
  6. Thanks for the info. I was planning on hitting the parkway at Cherokee and riding to Asheville next week. First road trip on the Venture. I wasnt even thinking about checking closures. I dont think it will affect me, but I'll double check. I was sad to miss the Asheville meeting. Next time...
  7. I guess I posted this in the wrong place. I'm new here and just found the restuarant reviews section. It does have some good roads going there.
  8. My Wife and I found a good place to eat in Batesburg Leesville, SC. I got a Burger, just to try it out. It's a 1/2 pound patty, loaded on a homemade bun with chips on the side. Set me back $5.79. The places is called Wiz's Eatery. All roads leading to Batesburg are good. No traffic, in the country, and acessible to people from GA. I'll meet you there.
  9. Thats too bad. Well, I went around last week and tried on several kinds. HJC, Vega. I think Vega might be on the bottom of the qualitiy heap. I wasnt happy with the fit of any of them. All the 1/2 helmets hit the tops of my ears. Then with my sun glasses on, it was terrible. Then, I ended up at a Yamaha shop, tried on a 1/2 Fulmer. It was great. Sold !!, to the man in the black hat. I was happy, buuut only because I tried on several helmts before I found the right one. I would never buy one off the internet. All of the brands fit differently. Only my opinion though.
  10. I hear the shoe is da bomb. I cant afford one at 500 buckaroos. My 3/4 helmet is so hot here in SC I bought a 1/2 helmet (Fulmer). It is very comfortable and light weight. It might not be so good for crashes you know. Full faced are the best for face plants. Any DOT kind will give you a pass with the Police. Well, Hope you find one soon. Mine cost a meer 50.00. Not bad concidering the heat this summer. I'll go back to my 3/4 in the fall.
  11. A big thanks to these experienced Venture riders. WOW, this is cool. I just bought this Midnight Venture and thought I would meet the Hawks and compare bikes. I figured I would get an educated opinion on the status of the new (2002) RSV and if it seemed to be in good shape. To my surprise Sleeperhawk offered to tune the carbs. Cool beans huh. After tuning, he took it out on my request and put it through the paces. It passed with flying colors. Next thing you know a bad thunderstorm blew in and it started raining. Bummer. Hawks Mechanic offered to puller her car out of the garage and put the Midnight V in the warm and dry slot. I then called my wife to come and get me. After wife arrived, we all talked a little on the porch and called it a night. Man, it sure was good to meet the Hawks tonight. I know my bike likes the nice dry garage too. Thanks again and I'm sure we'll all have a good time riding together.
  12. I'ma newby to the forum. Hated to read about this thread. I just bought a 2002 RSV w/ 22K miles 2 weeks ago. Havent read the whole manual, but think I made a goof. My wife and I went riding 150 miles. Had a great time. The next day, heard a groaning noise first time I sat on the bike. I figured it was the shock. This thread confirms it. Bad thing is, I didnt put any air pressure in the shocks. I wanted a smooth ride. Duhh. Yesterday, I put air in both shocks, which it does ride better. No oil leaking yet. I wonder how long it will last? Man those shocks are expensive. What a dummy. Self induced pain. What a drag....
  13. I was jogging down a road and saw a Venture pass me. That thing had a very load whine. So load...Sounded like George Jetson's space craft. A person would have a hard time getting used to that sound. However, I just bought an 02 Midnight and it whines a little at 55-60. Mine is certianly tolerable. I cant say I know what the chirp is though. I guess I'm lucky.
  14. I just bought the "DryDuck" suit from a rubber and gasket company in Wilmington, NC. for $20.00. I know thats not helping you much, but you might can call around locally and ask for Dryducks. They are thinner than FrogToggs, but I think they are made from the same Company. Price isnt too bad for what you get. Good Luck.
