  1. Just curious if anyone has one they would like to sell. Mine is seriously Kapoot. I keep checking ebay and can find em for 200 give or take but it's always for the whole dash... I don't need all that. Also, any ideas if other speedo's are compatible? Thanks guys and gals! Jay
  2. Thanks for the input thus far... Sounds like ill be going with the Bluetooth headsets. I was really wanting to stay with original equipment but i think the benefit of the Bluetooth headsets might outweigh the want to stay original. Thanks again and if anyone has any other brands of the Bluetooth sets they like, let me know. Thanks again!!
  3. Ok, so my intercom headsets have gone off to electronics heaven. I've looked at replacing them and the cost involved (dang the dealer is proud of these things) and have found them on places like ebay for not too bad a price but I'm starting to wonder if something like the Scala Rider blue tooth units would be a better way to go. I like the idea of having all original equipment but also hate to pay to get all new headsets and have another issue with with the audio system that puts me back to a non-functioning intercom. Seems like the Scala Rider may be the way to go but I've never used one and I'm still not sure about moving away from original equip as my 86 1st gen is beautiful and has otherwise all working equipment. Any thoughts? Ideas? Opinions? Thanks! Jay
  4. I've been readin LOTS and LOTS of posts on here about the tires.... shoooowheeee talk about varied opinions! HAHA.... Tires are such a personal choice that we all have our preferences... I'd personally love to put the Elite II on the bike but I'm on a budget... so I'm having to step back to a lesser tire and maybe a while down the road, I can get the Elite II's and pull the D404 off for a back up.... Sigh... Anyone got those winning lotto #'s I can borrow??????? Jay
  5. Well.... I've taken tomorrow off for a three day weekend. Tomorrow will be spent bringing my wheel and tire to the shop to have a new rear tire put on. The rest of the weekend will be spent riding. (I Hope). I think I've narrowed it down between the Dunlop D404 and The Shinko 777. Any thoughts on these or should I be looking at something different all together? I'm really leaning towards the Dunlop but just thought I'd pop in for a few varied opinions. Hope ya'll are doing great! Happy trails! Jay
  6. Thanks for the help guys, Makes way more sense now! I'll have all new rubber for spring!!
  7. I'm replacing rear tire on my 86 venture. That is going smoothly, however, I also want to replace the front tire as well and this is where I've run into a big fat... "HUH????". The front tire is a Bridgestone Spitfire touring and the only size I can see on it is listed as such: **** MR90-18 71H ***** again... HUH?????? what the heck is that? I've looked online and cant seem to find any such size. I'm Planning on going with the D404 Dunlop 140/90/16 on the rear from motorcycle superstore online as the $105 with free shipping seems to be the cheapest I can find. I'd like to put the matching Dubnlop on the front but am lost with this tire size issue. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Jay
  8. Ok, I just went and checked the oil.... ummmm yeah, it was a bit high... not all the way to top but close... oopps. So anyway, I drained it till it's right dead in the middle. when I drained it I also drained a bit into a cup to inspect the oil. The oil looks great and my coolant level as also perfect. I took her up and down my subdivision roads a few times to warm her up at the delight of all my neighbors I'm sure... Once nestled safely in the driveway, I let her sit for a bit. Still smoked once I reved it but it seemed to go away in a couple minutes where as before it would not go away until I got on and hit some higher speeds of actual ride time. I'm wondering if maybe with it being too full of oil, if it will just take some time now to get rid of the build up and will stop smoking all together? Maybe some seafoam in the tank and in crankcase and an oil change to get it gone completely? not exactly sure. Also, while inspecting all of this, I noticed somewhat of a knocking noise that was much more obvious on the right side of the bike. Not anything that made me say HOLY CRAP!!!! but was a bit more obvious when my head was down there looking at the sight glass and such. Is this more or less a normal noise? just curious. Thanks again! Jay PS, Skydoc, I'll send ya a PM. I'm definitely interested in your offer. Thanks so much for your help and input.
  9. I always use Yamalube for wet clutch so I dont think that would be the case... or maybe it could be??? I'll have to use some vacation days to search the threads here on oil use... HAHA! anyways, Thanks for the tip! I'm not a professional mechanic but I do almost all my own work and have done so for a long time so here's hoping that when it comes time to do the job that it will go as smoothly for me as it did you! lol. Thanks again! Jay
  10. Smoke coming from the exhaust out the back, not from any other strange place. the temp Gage actually reads just fine... not even really high at all. it's cooler now and the fan kicks on fine so the temp always stays nice and centered in the middle... if it gets a bit high, the fan comes on and you can watch it cool back down a bit. Let me say also that while it's cold it seems to idle fine without the build up of smoke. Once it's warmed up is when it seems to build up the smoke while idling. It doesn't have that coolant odor to it that smoke normally has when it's a coolant issue nor am I making oil (my oil level is not rising) and also the oil smells normal. Once she's warmed up and idles she starts to smoke... just a TINY TINY bit at idle but kicks out quite the cloud when you get up and go and the RPMS get higher. If you put it in neutral and just rev it, you can make smoke signals with it if you had a good blanket on hand. Once you ride out on the open road, a smoke trail will follow for about 1/2 mile then dissipates and all is well again. If I never get stuck in traffic or have to wait longer than a standard traffic light, it will not smoke at all the whole day. it's just when I have to sit that this phenomena occurs. (things that make you go hmmmmm) Anyways, thanks again! Jay
  11. smoke seems to be white/grey if memory serves from the other weekend I'll have to check and see where I'm at on the sight glass... if its a bit high, I'll drain some and see what happens... should I be looking at doing a valve adjustment anyway? 45,000 miles and not sure if its ever been done. Only had it up and running for this summer. Bought it about a year ago or so but been doing carbs etc etc to get her on the road.

  13. OK, so I rode up to Helen, GA the other day as I live about 30 min south for Oktoberfest. First time Ive ever had traffic to sit in up in the mountains which is pretty much all I ride. as I sit still at an idle, she starts to smoke. as I begin to move the smoke continues but as I ride out it goes away. Out of curiosity, I've repeated this process and sure enough, it happens just the same. I thought about rings maybe but as I'm reading through, I'm wondering about valve adjustment. I would think if it were rings, it may smoke all the time???? not sure. She's got 45,000 miles on her and if I were to guess, she's not been adjusted. Found a great write up on second gen valve adjustments but no luck finding on here about the 1st gen. sounds like a heck of a job but given my service manuals, you guys and my total disregard for digging into something I've never done before..... well I just don't see why we cant make this just work like a stinking charm! lol Anywho, any thoughts? any links to posts I've not found yet or anything else that could be helpful would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys and gals! Jay
  14. Earl, Thanks for the links! As soon as $$ alows, I'll be placing my order with ya. Have a few other projects that may need attention sooner... Thanks for the vote of confidence... I bought this bike from my brother and it holds some special sentimental value, so I'm gonna keep on plugging away at her till I get it all right. The forks werent too bad with the exception of I didn't have the oil seal replacement tool but I found that a 2" PVC "T" with the long side cut in half to be able to go around the forks did the trick. HAHAHA! I've made some strange things work in my day but that was one of the strangest backwoods tool/part I've ever made... HAHAHA! oh, Ive read on here that you (earl) sell a clutchg kit too. what all does that come with? I've been told the plates dont wear out, just the springs. I'll need to do that soon. She's ok for the moment but If I hammer down, she'll slip just a bit. Thanks again, sure am glad I found ya'll. I'm in Flowery Branch, GA. hope to meet some nearby members one day. Jay
  15. Well, It took some doing but I got the new fork seals installed. The job wasnt too terribly bad thanks to many posts on here but a particular thanks to Freebirds post on Fork Seal Replacement. Couldn't have done it without you especially since this was my first venture (no pun intended) in the great wide world of fork seal replacments! lol. Got everything back together and the Class wouldnt work. Thanks again to Freebirds post on Class E4 error repair, I was able to solder all the broken connections and the class system again works as a charm! YAHOO!!!!! One quick question... When I apply the front brake and push down on the handlebars, I seem to be able to bottom out the forks a bit too easily. I'm wondering if the springs inside the forks wear out and would need to be replaced. The fork oil is new, the air pressure is working but like I said, seems to be able to bottom out too easy. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks! Jay
  16. Thanks guys for the tips. I've never tackled any fork projects before. I keep getting mixed signals on forks... Some say replace everything.... Springs, seals, slides, dust covers etc... some say replace oil and seals only. How do I know what all needs to be replaced?#
  17. I've got a leaky seal on my front forks. Due to financial constraints, they will have to wait to get fixed this winter. As of now, they don't have much pressure of any kind to them and riding a low rider without much suspension is not my cup of tea.... Lol. The class system flashes E1 which I'm assuming from what I've read is due to the lack of pressure or ability to create pressure. Anywho? Any easy ways to refil these with fluid and/or air so I can have a few more good rides this season before she gets overhauled this winter? Thanks guys!
