Probably they are scorched from the type of riding you describe. Were the metal bands silver or brown looking? Did you replace the clutch disc with the Heavy Duty one??
No Carb kits available but you might check with MiCarl or Skydoc_17 to see what they have. Same with rebuild kits or try ebay. If you rebuild them try to hone out the cylinders as one of the main problems is the bores will have corrosion and uneven areas. Honing the cylinders fixes that.
Just a quick comment on the age of the bike, it IS 16 years old! Rubber parts can go bad. Time has come for all of us to start thinking about 2nd gens as old...
