  8. If you follow Goose's suggestion remember you do not have to be exact on the degrees as there is several degrees in the rotation where there is no lift from the cam so as long as you are as accurate as possible with the wrench position you should be OK. You can prove this by measuring, then move the wrench a little then remeasure. Go both ways and all three readings should be the same...
  9. OK I'll pipe in here as well. I was a senior electrohydraulic technician in the Aircraft division of Moog, Inc. (Inventors of the EHSV) before I retired but regardless of that, my '09 fluid is still clear as can be after 5 years. I'm finally going to replace it this spring only because of it's age. I took a sample by using a vacuum pump from the slave cylinder. Therefore I too am saying your condition is quite abnormal for these bikes...

  14. We are here to offer advice whenever you need it! As for the carbs, there is an excellent video out on how to rebuild and set up the carbs properly. It is for VMax carbs but ours are the same thing just jetted a little different and the choke linkage is different. It can be found on ebay occasionally... I have a copy of this video. Get that bike running for this summer and come on out and meet some of the WNY members and come to the big regional rally this August!
  15. Hmmm, a pinhole or two on the diaphragms comes to mind. You might try a can of seafoam in the gas and ride it like you stole it, but that will only help to clean the carbs out but won't fix bad diaphragms...
  16. Yup!! From a maintenance standpoint it is easier to replace the cable from the bottom end rather than from the dashboard end. Unfortunately it means that you can loose the cable the way you did...

  19. Yes, for a 1st gen the way to go is clearview with a vent. For blacking out on the bottom, I suggest masking the windshield and spraying the bottom where you want it masked out with black paint or grey tint. As suggested, check their website out and pick up one of their "blems." It saves money and the blemishes are sometimes almost impossible to detect. As far as scratches, all it takes is one ride in the dessert with wind to literally sandblast the shield! Use furniture polish to clean your shield and most of the scratches will disappear...
  20. Actually, I am now a fan of F4 windshields! With the tall shield, expect to loose a MPG or 2 to wind resistance, but I never had any issues with buffeting. The wife appreciated the larger shield as well, less wind...
  21. I can't think of a single mechanical thing that would cause that! Perhaps you are assuming everybody plays with a full deck...
