  1. Art708, I was all excited when I first seen these and jumped right into it. Boy what a big dissapointment when I took off the rear seat a like you seen all the "spot welded" brackets. Have a friend that has a RSTD and looked at his fender. If they came in the same colors I would consider getting another fender (RSTD) also. Just don't have the skill for painting. I have also considered fabing up some type of low profile cover that would bolt up to existing brackets and conseal all the wiring just incase I wanted to convert back. Dennis
  2. Everyone here is such and inspiration. I like reading post where someone has done something different or thought out side the box. With that I would like to show off my version of my "Star Glide". Basically I just took off the trunk, keeping the bracket/support and kept my CB (even though I don't really use it). Fabricated a dimond plate platform/cover for CB and stuff. Then found a small chrome rack. I like the way it looks, hope this helps someone else!!! Dennis
  3. flb_78, yes I read that and am awary that the CB will be lost or have to relocate. Love my RSV but since I got it I have never even used it. I even did the "Marshall Mod". Just like the look of the "Starglide". Something different!! Just curious how others that have done it delt with seat options, maybe a luggage rack inplace of passenger seat or fabed up some antenna brackets so they could keep the single or double antenna. Dennis
  4. Hello everyone, I searched as suggested and read the two or three post on removing the trunk on the RSV and converting to the "Starglide". When I searched I was hoping there would be lots more info. My question is does anyone have any more input or suggestions/tips on this converseion. The basics on the trunk removel is stright forward enough but what I was looking for is any input/problem solving on what was done to fill the void (seats, back rest or luggage racks) also suggestions or alternatives to the antennas (brackets, etc). I also read the post on converting the antennas form two to one. Just didn't find anything on remounting locations or brackets to do this. Has anyone done a more indepth write up on this to include some pictures? Dennis
  5. geep, I did consider those at first. Those are just like the ones I had on my Road Star. Those are the same ones that MAXAIR sells for there "Big air kit" for Yamaha. The porblem was that with the limited research I was able to do/find they would let too much air in. Like most that I found that have done air filter mods to the RSV if the filter is to large then to much air gets in and then everyone had to "re-jet and shim the needle valve or something". Just started getting to complicated. My goal was to simply dress up the air filter area, Not to gain great horse power or anything like that. Thats why I went with the "Pancake" type air filter. From what I could gather they would not let excessive amounts of air in and no re-jeting. Just good looks!! But if you followed along with my post I did go have my fuel air mixture checked and adjusted due to the fact that it had never been done and most commented that the RSV does run lean from the factory. I posted what the findings were and how they were corrected. Sence then my bike has run great without any problems. As for fuel mileage, well I confess I really have not crunched the numbers but I don't seem to have any problems with the bike getting low mileage. I think it has improved but again, just haven't needed to check!!! Dennis
  6. Thanks Carbon_One, Those are the exact ones I was talking about. Your links work great. (Got to learn how to do that better!!). The one that you have mounted in your trailer is the one I'm leaning towards (Less cost !!!) and plan on leaving it installed on trailer. Does it interfear in any way with the rotors on the front tire? I read on one post that it is just barley wide enough for our front tires and dosen't allow for the tire to seat all the way. Also the picture looks like the front disk rotor sets inside the rails (for that bike). I went out and looked at the RSV and the rotors stick out a little on each side!!
  7. V7Goose, Thanks for the reply. Don't know why the links did not work. I changed them to descriptions instead. I should have made myself more clear. I did not have any intension of just parking the bike in the stand and not securing it down. I have to agree that would be foolish. But you hit the nail on the head with your advice on these stands being able to hold the bike in position long enough to allow for tie down.
  8. Out of the two MC Stand/Wheel Chocks that Harbor Freight sells, which one is the better for the 2nd Gen. RSV? I would be mounting it to a wood deck trailer. Do both of these when mounted to the floor or trailer deck support the bike for free standing? Does the lower cost one (96349-2vga) have any problems with the side rail/tubing hitting the bikes break rotor? Motorcycle Wheel Chock http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/gifs/clear.gif Chock moves up automatically, securing wheel in place. 9. wes0778, $255 for carb sync!!!! Here in OK my local dealer wanted $80 and I thought that was high just to sync the carbs. Then I found a dealer in Tulsa, OK that not only sync'd the carbs but put my bike on a gas analizer and corrected the factory fuel/air mixture to proper settings and adjusted the idel all for a whopping $55. That is there everyday price!!!!! Dennis
  10. Just have not gotten up the nerve to take my dash apart to give it a look see. Would like to only have to take it apart once!! Just thought I'd ask to see if anyone has done this before. Dennis
  11. Hey everyone, I have a question about XM radios. If you buy a small XM radio unit can you use it in/on both bike and in car/truck? Would you have to buy two antennas to make this happen? I have an 06 Chevy that has Built in XM that I do not use and was wondering if the antenna could be unpluged from the trucks radio and used on the radio that will be used on the bike? Sorry if this sounds crazy, just would like to be able to use one XM radio for both bike and truck. Dennis
  12. Has anyone tried to adapt something like this to Carbon_one's free standing kit? I like the idea of being able to move and turn on a dime!! I have Carbon_one's free standing lift adapter and a sears motorcycle/atv jack but would like more freedom in moving the bike around. Seems the sears jack/lift is limited in movement/turning!! Dennis
  13. If anyone is looking for a simple trunk rack that will bolt up to a RSTD take a look at the "Wompus" rack. Here is there site: http://www.wompusracks.com/ They make a rack for the "Royal Star Deluxe", it's for the RSTD. Scroll to the bottom of the page and you will see the rack called "Yamaha Royal Star Deluxe". Then you can find just about any trunk and mount it to the rack!! A good site to go to to ask questions on putting fairings, saddlebags or trunks on anything is: http://forums.delphiforums.com/ultrastar/start These guys have all the answers and sources. Also you can visit one of there links: www.scootworks.com . They sell trunks and racks for the RSTD. Dennis
  14. Thanks for all the replies. Sorry SilvrT, I didn't look to see where you were from. I typed in "Sears Canada" and like you said there were none of this type!! Our Sears here in the U.S. has a sale on them tommrow and I just didn't know if one was more reliable than the other. Like I mentioned in my previous post, I had the red lift several years ago for my Silverado and it was good and had no problems. Today as I was looking at the two I noticed that the red lift had bad reviews compaired to the yellow lift. Dennis
  15. SilvrT, Here is the web site for sears. When looking for the jacks you have to type in "Motorcycle/ATV Lifts" in the search box. I too typed in jacks and got nothing at first. This link takes you directly to the page that has all three that Sears sells. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/search_10153_12605?keyword=motorcycle%2Fatv+lifts Hope this helps!! Dennis
  16. Hey all, Just ordered a Carbon_one free standing lift adapter and was intrested in knowing which Sears jack best works with the adapter. I had the red lift several years ago and it seemd to work well for the short time I had it. Have been reading the reviews lately on Sears web site and the red lift dosen't seem to be very popular in ratings. Just wanted to know how others feel about this and out of the two is the red or yellow lift better with Carbon_one lift adapter and supporting our heavy bikes? Thanks, Dennis
  17. hkd51, I gave K&N as one source for filters as well as a few others. I noted that I did not go with K&N due to the fact that they had only rubber bases and chrome topes. I went with one of the other sourse (they all had chrome base and tops and rubber flanges). With K&N as well as with all other sources (of the 4.5" dia x 1.5" thick filters) the flang only comes in 1.75" (44mm) I.D. opening. When you look at K&N filters (round stright) there list showes all deminsion as well as flang off set (one problem) and flang angle (another problem). I wanted to go with one of the 4.5" x 7" x 1.5" (oval) but the flang off set is 0.5" and that would make them set funny (one would set forward the other would set back) You could correct this by flipping the filters but they have the "K&N" logo deeply embosed into there chrome tops!!!! I am still considering going with the 4.5" x 7" x 2" (oval). They are have center flanges and no angle. Just don't know if that might be to much filter and then will have a "too lean" problem. They are $44 each. Kind of costly to make a mistake with. Forgot to add the flange on the bike is approx 2.25" (57mm) that is why the adapter is needed. Here are a few pictures of the adapter and the bracket I made. The bracket was just riveted to the filter to make one unit. Dennis
  18. I would like to give everyone an update on how the air filters are holding up. A good friend suggested that I should take the bike in and have my system checked out. He has a RSTD and like most have posted these bikes have come from the factory running a little lean. His has no modification and was in fact running lean. My local dealer wanted to charge me $80+ to have the mixture checked. So my friend new of a Yamaha dealership that is the oldest Yamaha shop in Oklahoma and did his Sync and EGA checked for $45. That was a special deal for him but they only charged me $55 for the same service. For that price compaired to what my local wanted I thought that was a bargan!! The bike has been running well and I have not had any problems. After they did my work (Sync/EGA) the bike ran so much better. Very responsive and crisp throttel. My idel was also a little high (from factory, and not corrected at 600mi service). My inital readings were as follow: #1 Cyl was 4.0%Co, #2 Cyl was .20%Co, #3 Cyl was 1.14%Co and #4 Cyl was .20%Co. They adjusted all to be 3.0% and Synced the Carbs and adjusted the idel. The mechanic said the bike is running fine and he seen no problems running this set up. As for the concern with H2O intering the filters, he also confermed what my thoughts were. With these small filters behind the lower faring along with being oil charged there would be very little if any H2O entering the system. But just to add another level of percaution I have ordered K&N drycharger covers. If there is any signe of rain while riding, just stop as I would to put on rain suit and the drycharger covers. Or they could be left on with no adverse effect on performance. Note: they do not make drycharger covers for the size filters I got (4.5" dia x 1.5" thick)but what I did (or will do when they come in) is to take the covers (for 5" dia x 7" thick) and cut them in half and have wife resew some eleastic or draw string into the cut end. If anyone would like pictures, when I finish I can provide them along with the part number. Sure hope this helps and sparks intrest for others to try this out. Dennis
  19. Just tried this product. I think it is a wast of money. Made me sick to think I wasted over $115 that I could of spent on some other accessory. The black base coat was great and the Lightning clear coat over the black was great also. When it came to the chrome part, I watched the video several times trying to pickup on all tips I could see. I did notice after that the chrome part he dusts is already chromed!!!! In all the other videos you will see him using HVLP equipment. They said there cans have a special nozzel and spray pattern. My chrome can did not have the special nozzel and even after shakeing the can it kept spewing out clear liquid and splatters. Had to keep cleaning and wiping off can an nozzel. So I change the nozzel with one of the other cans nozzel and it did the same thing. Never got chrome shiney. Thought that it would get better after the wash and it did only a fraction. Then the video instructions tell you to apply another coat of clear. Well that took all the chrome away and made it look like regular wal mart silver paint. Total waste of time and money. The kit does not come with instructions. You have to log on there web site, read the instructions there and watch the short video. I called them and they said all the products have a shelf life and it could also have been my technique. I told him that may be ture but everything worked except the chrome part and I was very attentive to the technique and did not use it like a regular spray paint. The cans are not as full as regular paint cans so your project needs to be small. They made no offer to reemburse or replace what I feel was a defective product. Dennis
  20. I will be using it for more than just hauling the bike home. Have a full size chevy and will use the trailer to also haul things like lawn mower. I looks like the size should be a 5x10 to hold the bike. With all the info so far I think also a wood floor would be best. The expanded metal (mesh) just does not give me a good feeling for strength!!! Just didn't know if the ones a Lowes were of good build and quality. Dennis
  21. Will be taking a trip this May. This will be my first long haul trip on my Venture. Will be traveling from OK to GA, then from GA to FL (all solo). After that distance I will be meeting my family and would like to trailer my bike back. My question is are the type of trailers that Lowes have any good for carring large bikes like the Venture? They have both the open mesh floor type and the open wood floor type. What size would be needed for the Venture and which would be prefered (open mesh or wood floor)? I also will plan on getting a wheel chock for the front tire. The trailer will be pulled by a V6 Dodge Van (automatic). As you can see by my map, I need to color in some states!!!!!!! Dennis
  22. Thanks, Don't know enough about the VMax. Thought that type of bike would be low to the ground. Dennis
  23. For the life of me I thought I seen a post somewhere where someone asked if a VMax center stand would fit on a RSTD or RSV. I can't find the post anywhere so I would like to ask this question once again. Would it? Dennis
  24. I did worry about warrenty work, thats why I did not modify any thing. I can quickly put the stock air boxes/filter back on. I also thought about putting shields on top portion of filter if I could find some chrome strips of metal that would do the job. Does anyone think that the size of filter that were used could creat a problem of having the bike run lean or rich. I'm not a mechanic or anything like that so I have no way of testing or knowing. I have read that a bike that runs lean (to little fuel and to much air) would cause loss in performance (studdering, hesitation, loss of throttel response). I don't have any of these signs but what I worry is with the size of the filter and filter area/cfm (127) what would I look for in a rich running condition (to much fuel and not enough air intake)? Hope I got those right!!! With my simple mind I just can't seem to think that with the stock filter size and box with the 1.5" hole drawing in air I shouldn't have any problems. My yamaha mech. looked at it (seems to be supportive) and said it sounded good but without paying him thats all he would do. Said he could put it on a "EGA" or something but would be some work and would cost$$$ (per hour labor). Dennis
  25. Kbay, I read somewhere where someone had a kit on there bike with larger filters (Big Air Kit) on bikes like Harleys, Yamaha and Honda and They did not have any trouble. When they parked there bikes outside for any length of time they would use "Shower caps" to cover the filters. Most oil charged filters repell water anyway. I found out when I was oiling these I put to much oil on them and when I went to start over and wash them out that the water did not get inside the filter and when I put water inside the filter they held water like a bowl. So that made them somewhat water repelent. Plus being behind the lower faring is an added bonus and safety factor. If you go with some of the oval type filters, K&N makes PreChargers for dusty contitions and DryChargers for wet conditions. Here is some info on them: http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=22-2000PL Dennis
