  2. I'm almost sure that you want the one with the H4 base. I got a two-pack at the local auto parts store (Advanced Automotive, I think, but most will carry it).   4. FWIW, my dealer put them on with the low beams, no relay. I rewired them this summer so that they are on all the time, high or low beam. I use the running lights to energize the relay. Most of our roads are busy enough that on-coming traffic forces me to use low beams. Just because I am on low beams doesn't mean deer aren't there. I find the passing lamps particularly useful on low beam. Also, in town, I want that triangle of light, and I need to be on low beam all the time. Also, my Silverstar Ultra headlight (rumboogy, this is a worthy upgrade--just a bulb swap out) is bright enough that oncoming cars will often "flip me off". I can pop the highbeams (burning their corneas) to demonstrate that I was on low beams and still have my passing lamps. I don't know much about filaments these days, but it seems most lights burn out when they turn on. Toggling them on and off is inviting a filament death, I think. Dave
  5. 1) Definitely yes. However, they resist might since it's not the way the instruction manual specifies. 2) Mine came with a switch on the lamp housing. That's fine for me since I run them lit all the time. The only time I turn them off is when I get my bike's state inspection. I have thought about these switches. Can you show pictures? How did you route the wires down the handlebars? Does the switch replace the cover, or does it cover the entire thing? The instructions imply that it replaces the cover, but it also looks like it slips over the reservoir? Dave
  6. Yeah, I had to put in the contacts yesterday so I could wear the sunglasses while riding. Christmas shopping on the motorcycle felt wrong, but I got used to it soon enough.
  7. Usually I turn up my left highway peg and sit the helmet on that. That keeps the helmet low and generally out of sight. If it is raining, I put the helmet on the seat to keep the seat a bit dry. On my RSTD, you have to use a cable to reach the lock behind the seat. PITA. Dave

  11. First of all, I didn't need an explanation. IBA is staffed by volunteers, and I have done enough volunteering to understand what that means. I think it was a very stand up thing for Mr. Kneebone to offer an explanation, and I understand it completely. If I could pick the "low hanging fruit", I would. It just makes sense.   13. Is the "count up" mechanism the same though? If no one else steps up to give an idea of how much it can run on reserve, I will. I have fuel cans I can take with me so that I am not stranded. Plus, it is still riding weather. My testing regime could be: * Turn off reserve (I run with it on reserve full time) and drive until I run out. Note how many miles on the count-up/flashing F. * Turn on reserve and ride until dead. I'll try sloshing to see if that adds anything. Ride until there is nothing left. Note mileage on count-up/flashing F. See if there is an idiot light. Will that suffice? Will I need to do anything heroic to restart it, besides adding fuel? Dave
  14. I haven't read all of it, but I did read this: Is this a difference between RSTDs and RSVs? I don't have a low fuel light (that I know of), but my odometer will count up when it says I am on low fuel. I can go about 14 miles indicated before I need to be on reserve. Actual reserve mileage is at least 35 miles indicated, or about 50 miles on the count-up. I haven't actually run completely out of gas. If this is a difference between RSTDs and RSVs, a word of caution might be in order. I like the idea though. Just curious, is there a maximum article length? Dave
  15. I submitted my documentation a couple weeks before you and haven't heard squat. They haven't cashed my check, so it isn't pending either. Maybe since you did an organized ride, they bought your documentation cheaper? Anyways, congrats! That's a great early Christmas present. Dave
  16. Does the comparatively blunt transition of the RSTD windscreen explain why our MPG is so often much worse than the RSV? Dave

  18. On an RSTD, the bolts that hold the tank trim also will work. I had mine come off exactly as described, finding out when I went to downshift from the freeway and found the shifter on the floorboard. Dave
