  1. I have an Avon Venom on the front and an E3 on the rear of my '89. This combination works fine for me. Purchased the Avon first and would have put one on the rear but some of the people on this forum have had sidewall cracking with them and indeed the one I have now has some minor cracking, not enough to be concerned but I need to watch. Considered Shinkos and Kendas but people who had them had wildly different views on them. Just felt the risk was not worth the difference in price. Bought my E3 from Jake Wilson mounted it myself and used dyna beads to balance. Happy with the result. The fact that an E3 was less money than an Avon did not hurt either. Got about 17,000 mi on the E2 it replaced will be happy if it does that well. Just my opinion and experience. Jeff
  2. What is the facination with texting? I don't even have a cell phone. Guess I'm too old to get it.
  3. Always wear full face, I do not feel safe without one. Going without one is not worth the risk to me. That said I do NOT want the state telling me or anyone else they must wear one. Jeff
  4. I work as a mechanic at a John Deere dealer. I have seen wear like this before, I do not consider this galling as I consider galling involving metal transfer, to me this is pitting. In my experience pitting like this comes from Improper adjustment, high loads, poor/old oil, and/or large amount of use. The wear on the ring and pinion is not centered indicating improper adjustment but I really don't believe that this much wear should occur in 16,000 mi even if it was not adjusted correctly. In my experience this kind of pitting precedes a tooth breaking, it's hard to predict how long before this would happen. My advice would be to find another final drive or replace the ring and pinion. Good luck. Jeff
  5. Per Rick at Buckeye Performance I used 10w30 synthetic motor oil with my Progressive springs. He told me that this choice has better lubricating qualities than fork oil and being synthetic it should hold up well. The springs and oil along with a heavy duty fork brace transformed the handling of my '89.
  6. I ride daily to work weather permitting, use it for trips to the store if what I'm buying will fit. I alwys wear a helmet (do not feel right without one) and jeans, jacket depends on the weather. I suppose I should have better riding armor but I don't. When it is cold I wear insulated coveralls, I look hoaky but at least I am reasonably warm. I do not ride if it is colder than 32 degrees F. I hope global warming kicks in pretty quick so that the riding season in Minnesota could be extended for a couple months.
  7. For me watching this made me feel a little guilty, I have pulled things equally stupid while driving. It is only by God's grace that I have avoided a wreck. Watching this is a reminder to pay full attention while riding my Venture or driving a vehicle. Thanks for posting it. Jeff:Venture:
  8. I put Progressive Springs in the forks of my '89 VR. That with heavy fork brace and oil change to 10w30 synthetic oil made a world of difference in handling. Bonus- since air is not recommened with Progressive Springs CLASS does not have to work in front. Best fix for the money IMHO. Jeff
  9. Jared- First a disclaimer, my A/C experience is in the agriculitural field (John Deere specificly) not automotive. I know enough about auto A/C to keep my own going but do not consider myself an expert on automotive A/C. That said I assume you are asking my method for finding leaks in an A/C system. I have pulled a vac on systems and left it sit generally if the system holds a vacume it will hold a charge of refrigerant. The only problem I have found is that at times systems that hold a vacume will not hold pressure. My preferred method is to pressureize the system and use soapy water (dish soap) and spray lines paying special attention to hose crimps and other joints, steel return lines that are insulated are another common leak source. Also look for oil on parts of system. As for what I pressureize with I use just compressed air, I'm sure nitrogen is better but compressed air is cheap and readily available especially in field. I always evacuate system after finding and repairing leak and replace the reciever drier. This is how I found the leak on my Ford, because of the age and milage (212,000) of the car I did not replace the accumulator. I think that is where the dessicant is. If the system fails due to moisture contamination I am willing to live without A/C. The car is not worth spending too much money on. I hope this answers your questions and the answer isn't too wordy. Jeff
  10. My '94 has needed about 1 lb a year for the last few years to keep the A/C working. This year I put 2 lb in and it leaked out almost immediatly. Found pressure line between compressor and condensor had rusted through where there is insulation over it. (Cannot figure any good reason to insulate line between compressor and condensor) Removed line, because it looks horribly expensive I brazed the rusted areas installed line, pulled a vacume on system then recharged system. So far so good. I am a technician by trade so I have access to the equipment needed to do this. If you have this sort of problem I recommend you have a set of gauges and a vacume pump minimum to do this sort of repair. Good luck!
  11. First you never add refrigerant to high side unless you are charging an evacuated system with an A/C recovery/charging machine. What year is your Ford? If it is 1994 or later it should be R134A. Low side couplers for 134 should be blue and all the same reguardless of manufactuer. I assume you are charging with 12 oz cans. If you can get the coupler to fit properly you should be able to add enough refrigerant to close the low pressure switch to get the compressor to engage. If the compressor will not engage the you need to find out why. When charging with cans it is useful to put can in hot water to help the refrigerant to boil off faster. If your taurus is the same as mine it holds 2lb of refrigerant total.
  12. I took the rear end off my '89 VR to lube the splines where the universal joint connects to the drive shaft. Found that the pinion shaft had broken just below the nut that retains the bearing and drive collar. Can't say I noticed any noises related to this failure. I went to purchase one locally from someone who was parting out an '87 and his had same problem mine had. Did aquire one off ebay. Have spoken with Rick at Buckeye performance and he said if the final drive has a failure this is ususlly it. Just a possibility. Jeff
  13. Calling a spade a spade does not make one a hate monger, politcly incorrect maybe but not a hate monger. I think most everyone knows MJ was a pedofile. His money allowed him to get away with it. If I would do what he did I would be in jail and rightfully so. Awsome talent, personal life a mess. Calling truth hate or hate speech is how the left tries to shut down those who dare say it.
  14. Listening to the news onthe way to work Farah wasn't even mentioned. Just the freak. Sad. MJ's life just shows that all the money in the world won't buy happiness.
