  1. I just did the dremel trick of cutting the inner pipe to swing it out of the way and I gotta say the sound is great, not too loud or obnoxious but a nice throaty sound. It took about 25 cutting discs. What I didn't gather from the other post is that there is an inner sleeve in the outlet pipe and that you actually cut through 2 pipes. Used a screwdriver to move the loose pipe up and out of the way and now it sounds great. Thanks to all for the mod suggestion.
  2. I had the same problem with my '99 RSV trunk. Yamaha did put out a mod which consisted of mounting brackets and rubber mounts, I don't remember the Yam part # but a dealer should be able to get it for you, it was reasonably priced too. In addition to installing the new mounts, I had an old '87 trunk (also ABS plastic) and cut out a couple of approx 2" by 3" squares and used standard ABS glue used for plumbing and glued the pieces over the rear mounting holes for additional support. So far everything looks good and that's with slightly less than 14000 miles in the last 2 riding seasons, so there's a fair amount of shaking going on back there. So much so, that I've had screws come loose on one trunk hinge and one bag hinge.
  3. Saw a guy with an RSV who had a Tom-Tom GPS. The nice thing about it was that it is motorcycle specific. Some of the features I remember about it was that it was water resistant (not waterproof), came with handlebar mounts and had m/c specific menu selections - the one that I remember was 'Avoid Freeways' or something like that. I don't remember the model but I don't imagine it would take much surfing to locate it. Sorry that I'm not supplying more info but hopefully this helps. Doug
  4. I had the same problem on my previous '87. I ended up having to take the compressor controller apart and resolder the connections to the connector, pretty easy to do if you've got a soldering iron. On mine, if you looked closely, you could see hairline cracks on the solder joints, fairly common actually. Since then, at least while I had the bike, no problems.
  5. I just bought a IR temperature gauge from Harbour Freight (inexpensive, $28 incl shipping) that reads remote temperature and is guided with a laser beam. I haven't tried it on my RSV as I just got it and haven't had the opportunity. But, that was the main reason I bought it was to check temp's on the bike, I've tried it by just pointing it at things and it seems to work. Anyhow, this may be an excellent way of trouble shooting the exhaust temp without burning your little pinkies! I will try it out soon and post a reply if there is interest.
  6. I mounted the antenna on the trunk rack and ran the cable down under the backrest under the seats to the front of the bike. I think that's the best place with the least amount of interference. Doug
  7. I had the same happen to my '99 (new to me). When I went to remove the fuel hose from the tank valve and the brass tube came off with it. I used a bit of JB Weld around the brass tube and tapped it back in. I don't know how long it'll last but after approx 1600km it's holding just fine. Doug
  8. Geez, I thought is the fix that simple, the pouch simply lifts off? But no, I just checked mine, it's stitched in 4 places, 2 top and 2 bottom. This presents the fix to my dillema though, I will just cut the stitching and remove the pouch, problem solved. Thanks for your replies, I will have to withdraw the offer though. Keep the rubber on the road. Doug
  9. Hi all, I've got a Hopnel tank bra/cover with pocket in very good condition on my '99 RSV. I'd like to trade it, straight across, for a similar condition tank bra/cover without a pocket. Reason for doing this is that I'd like to add a small tank bag to my bike but the pocket takes up too much space. Anyone interested? Doug
  10. Thanks Bartley, did a search for synthetic and got lots of returns. Lots of opinions but they all help. I don't know why my original search didn't seem to turn up what I wanted. Yep, beautiful riding here, great roads and scenery and relatively little traffic. Went over 2 mountain passes yesterday, roads pretty clear, a bit chilly up top but still rideable. Doug
  11. Hello all, I couldn't find any specific info on this question, so I'll try a post. I've just purchased a '99 RSV, the manual says I should be using 20W-40 oil. I'm going to switch to synthetic but I've not been able to find 20W-40 (it also seems scarce in non-synth). I noticed on one of the threads that someone was using Mobil 1 15W-50. So, my question is, what type and weight of synthetic do you use? Lots of interesting stuff here, thanks to all you xspurts for the info. Doug
