  1. My son-inlaw is a deputy sheriff here in TN. He went to a week long training session last year and several law officers who work the Dragon's Tail were in attendance. Their name for the dragon is "One A Day Highway" because they call an emergency vehicle/wrecker for a serious accident on average once a day during the long riding season. I don't know what the most dangerous part of riding it is, it could be the steep dropoffs on one side or the stone walls on the other or the Crotch Rockets coming up from behind. I intend on riding some of the Western routes next summer so I'll be able to compare then.
  2. I tried Water Wetter and it did improve the position of the needle a little. On a hot day I previously was almost to the red area traveling at high speeds for serveral miles. Now there is an 1/8" more green showing. I put about 3 ounces in and am considering adding more but think I'll first tear into the water pump and see if the impeller is worn, if it's plastic. I'm in the process of adding a Champion Sidecar and need a little relief. Ronnie
  3. I've think I've seen the part your describing on Ebay several times. You might do a search and save it to receive email notifications when one comes up for auction. Hope you find what your looking for! Ronnie 83 Venture w/Champion Sidecar:detective:
  4. According to Yamaha the 1st generations will run 136 mph! Never had my 83 there, but went to 95 and was no where near the red line.
  5. Thanks to all for the reponses, this gives me a place to start. I think I'll check the switch contacts first. I also have had the instrument cluster out while working on lubing the speedo. I unhooked the wiring at the center of the cluster and it may not be plugged in good. I'll keep everyone informed when progress is made.
  6. Hi everyone, I think this is my first post. I had my low beam go out on my 83 Venture. I replaced the bulb and noticed the next time I hit the low beams it was again not working. I bought another H4 60/55 and immediately check the low beam and it's still not working. I've adjusted the headlight lower so that the high beam doesn't blind oncoming drivers but this also restrict the range that is lit when driving at night. Has anyone had this problem or any ideas what may be causing this problem.
  7. I've had my 83 for two summers now and it will run right next the the red after several miles during very hot weather. The fan will come on when sitting in heavy traffic. I'm 5" 10" and the angle I look at the heat gage in my normal sitting position is a little deceiving. If I sit up real straight the needle is actually in the green area but when I sit in my normal position it sometimes appears to be in the red. I have a friend at work that had an 83 for 15 years and it did the same thing. If it gets into the red out on the road then I would then dig into it further. There is an additive that has been discussed and used by some of the members that is listed on earlier post's that you could add. Does anyone remember the name of the product? It's supposed to drop the temp 15-20 degs. f. Hope you enjoy your classic:080402gudl_prv:. Ronnie
  8. I've read several posts over the past year concerning the occasional squealing/roaring noise coming front the front area of the 1st generation Ventures. My noise would come and go so I removed the speedo cable and the problem disappeared. My repair dictated that I remove the instrument housing and unplug the center electrical connections. I then injected White Lube (white lithium grease) several times using the end of the speedo cable to push it into the bearing area. I then reinstalled the cable and this "fix" cured the problem. Hope this helps someone that may be having the same problem.
  9. I noticed one on oldbikebarn.com. They specialize in old bikes and were recommended by a friend. I think the price was around $35 or so. Hope this helps.
