Wrecked my 1993 Royale tonight - have some questions?
syscrusher replied to syscrusher's topic in Watering Hole
Dave, Thanks, I may not need the whole radiator. I added some anti-freeze to it and it didn't take very much to bring the level up. The plastic faceplate was cracked up and the fluid level was down so I thought it might be leaking. It still could be or that little tube on the right front of the motor could be more damaged than it had been. If I wanted to restore appearances I'd be looking for that plastic faceplate though....... I'm a little more optimistic that it might go back together alright with just a few parts. I want to buy some of the plates Skydoc had to seal the anti-dive but he doesn't have an ad up for them. I could just replace the anti-dive unit if I can find one but I can't do much with the front end yet with it leaking fork oil all over. I can't ride it to see what else might be wrong with it this way either. -

Well, I'm having trouble believing it but things seem to be going the way you indicated. I finally got to speak with a claims rep from my insurance company and all they care about is whether they might have to pay. She told me it is the law that with liability only that is all that they can do. You know it really is a matter of what kind of world do you want to live in, one where cagers have a license to kill or one where they have a responsibility to ensure they don't kill you or cause you to wreck. I'm still talking to people here about it. I wonder if I shouldn't have invested in one of the biker legal fund memberships? -

Thanks, I appreciate it. I just didn't want to anyone to think I had rear-ended the car. Maybe some pictures will help? I'll try again to put them up here. My leg is looking pretty purple now. -

You got it! My big swelled up leg. The way vehicles ended up after impact. A couple tries for photo of the hole in the door. Last two are some of the front of the bike. The real functional damage is worse than this looks. My leg looks more pitiful every day. I appreciate the good thoughts and a very nice offer. I'm not ready to make a move yet and I'm afraid that if the frame is badly bent I probably won't go as far as trying to swap motors, but I may ask you about that radiator later on if you've seen it. -

If you are right then everyone needs to slam on their brakes as soon as they detect that someone may try to merge into their lane. That can't be how the law works. If it is I need to work on changing that. If he's telling the truth he should be able to pass a polygraph. If he can't pass there's more reason to believe my side of it. If he refuses that should be good reason to suspect he's lying. If the insurance companies won't pay for polygraphs then they're just playing games with my premiums. -

I didn't rear-end him, my anti-dive unit tore a hole in his driver side door after a virtually broadside impact. I realize that he was actually trying to do a U-turn in front of me and he did it really fast. He had to have punched the gas to move to where he was in the time I approached him. Before that he may have been slowly crawling along at the curb, I'm not sure of whether there was "some" movement out of him but he started from the curb and I was in the lane itself. -
I don't know you but you sent me one of those rubber straps that hold side covers on when i first came to the forums. I thought that was pretty cool so I hope you get past this wild ride you've been having and can manage to stay on firm ground. Take care, take it easy, hang around awhile.

I was thinking that it could work in my favor that he's lied now. I may challenge him to polygraph but I also think it speaks for itself. Experienced motorcycle riders DON'T pass cars on left that have their left turn signals on if the car is moving. I tried that once when I was sixteen but not again. No, I passed him because I thought he was trying to merge into the lane and would certainly wait till things were clear, looking in the mirrors to make sure. He was at the curb, not in the lane. I did see him signal and said so but I couldn't have stopped by then anyway. He gunned it when he went into his turn, the officer asked him if he was turning into the driveway across the street and he said he was but I think he was trying to do a quick U-turn. I couldn't get the official report, it wasn't ready yet. Will try again tomorrow and going to doctor to look at my big bruise and discuss some other aches and pains. I knocked on one of the neighbors door who could have seen it all but was told no one did. Thanks folks, I'll update if anything happens here. I've got other motorcycles I can ride so that's good but I was really trying to get ready for some touring on the Venture and now I'm further from it. I'll also have to wait to see what the terms end up being, I don't want to put in more time on a motorcycle that gets totaled and the sell-back price too high, etc. This sucks. -

Well I got a message from my insurance people saying that they had opened a claim and that he's saying I was passing him in the left lane when he was making his left turn from the right lane proper. I hate liars, especially when their lies cause me trouble. My agent says that they have to back me up if it goes to court but this is looking difficult now. I'm going to go pick up the police report and see what he wrote........ -

Do you know what the blue colors on an '89 were? They look similar anyway. -

Michael, I hadn't had a drink or anything else. I'll give you a call in about half an hour. I had told the kid's dad that he could contact me until then if he wanted to make me an offer to pay and I want to see if that's the way it goes. I do wonder if the laws in Canada would be substantially different, but I am interested in what you have to say. The only mitigating factor is that I fear the kid's dad is going to try whatever it takes to weasel out of the responsibility for this. I've been trying my agent this morning but calls not answered. I can generally discuss the big picture with him without fear of incrimination until I tell him to file a formal claim. -

Thanks for all of the responses, I really appreciate it! I took a look at it and I can't tell if the forks are bent or not. The radiator may be leaking. The cowling seems to be tougher than I thought, it's got a scuffed edge that's barely noticeable. I had the rotor covers with the lights on them and the light is gone from the right side. The top of the anti-dive valve was ripped off of the right fork. It's spewing oil and sucking air. There was a hole in the door of the car I'm assuming was made by the lower part of the anti-dive. There's tire marks on the front of the right side exhaust pipes from the front wheel. The front fender was broken from it's mounts so I tore it off so I could ride it the dozen or so blocks home. It pulled right badly when doing that. Sitting in the garage on the kickstand it's leaning far to the left like the forks elongated or something else is bent. Maybe the forks are pushed rearward which would change the rake angle. Hey Cowpuc, you mentioned whether the frame could be bent at the neck, how easy is it to do that? In Nebraska if damages total over $1000 a report must be filed with State Patrol so if I settle with them it kind of needs to be below that or the kid's insurance will go up anyway. -
A young kid working as a Jimmy John's driver was at the curb and really not moving as I traveled 3/4 block at 25mph. Just as I reached him he hit his left turn signal and then turned in front of me, headed to a driveway to turn around, as I was driving by. He started lying about things and if it goes to court he'll probably claim I was illegally passing him on a residential street by then. Little by little he's changed his story so far. My view, he negligently failed to check his side view to ascertain that it was safe to pull into lane much less to cross traffic to driveway on opposite side of street. I had the police come out but officer said he is supposed to write a ticket if he can but he didn't see it and didn't feel able to write a ticket. He didn't even record our respective views on the accident at the time. So much for professional witness. He might still be useful if there is a court appearance, but it would be nice if it didn't come to that I suppose. It seems that police here don't write tickets to protect motorcyclists from disregard of car drivers. The kid's dad says he wants to possibly try to save the kid's insurance by paying me on the side for damages. I may have bent forks, anti-dive busted off, bits of signal plastic and other stuff all about. I haven't had a good daylight look at it yet but it rolled all the way over onto the left side cowling so I expect bad things. I had removed side plastics but also engine guards while I'm working on some stuff. 1. Should I have this painful, firm, tuna can sized lump on my thigh checked out? 2. Should I try to deal with this guy or just go to my agent? Got Liability only. 3. Please give me a ballpark estimate of costs if you're able, sorry the description is so vague but I need orders of magnitude. 4. I have the blue color for 1993, what other years had this same color and what is it called? 5. What am I not even thinking of that I should be concerned over? The car insulated the young kid from the accident while I took it on physically with my motorcycle and myself.

I'll assume that it's alright to keep it around for several weeks since I'd need to order whichever shims were used before returning the kit, or is there another method for replacing the ones needed? BTW, A mechanic here claimed that the adjustment only really needs to be done this one time around 30,000mi. Is that accepted to be true or what do others experience?

With the HID and ballast setup I have I could just flip to the high beam and then back to restart the HID. I find that it really is a matter of breakover voltage which the ballast will supply on activating the HID. If the HID is already hot it will re-engage with just the 12v supply. My H4 headlight HID has a dimmer 55W halogen for high and the brighter HID is actually the low beam. I highly recommend one like that. IMHO it's too complicated to use for the ditch lights, however. Buy some high output LEDs (800+ lumen) for those and enjoy.

Does anyone know which caps to buy for the ignition cables and/or the resistance value? -

syscrusher replied to flyday58's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
It looks like the wires and caps were awful expensive when they were available. Was there anything special about them, or do you have any suggestions for an off-the-shelf replacement? -

I have one cylinder that seems weak when the bike getting warmed up but I haven't looked into it much. On the 93 the TCI isn't supposed to be prone to failure, I think. I'm interested to hear about the difference when you get the COP setup. -

Boats.net It'll add about $115 for two dust seals and two each of both kinds of bushings. -

Just replace both bushings on both forks and forget about it. You won't be able to tell by looking at them. Replace the dust seals too. If you do the work and it turns out those other parts are worn you lose your time and your investment in the seals and fork oil. I did mine four times but finally got smart on the last time. Be smart sooner than I was. My seal replacing experiences: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=81910 My nifty seal driver: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=81110 -
The theory on Concealed Carry is that a criminal has no idea whether anyone is packing or not and so it discourages crime (since everyone might be packing). Open carry shows criminals who has a piece for certain, and where they might be able to get a gun if they need one. For everyone's safety it's better to let thugs try to guess who has the gun. If your state requires a permit to carry or to carry concealed then it may be a felony to carry or carry concealed without a permit. Or it may be a felony in the state you're traveling through. In my state if you get yourself convicted of a gun-related crime which includes carrying concealed without a permit or carrying concealed somewhere that you're not allowed to then you can be banned from ever receiving a permit. It's in the list of disqualifying factors. Don't jeopardize your ability to legally carry. Not trusting the government will not be an effective defense against criminal proceedings for disregarding firearms laws even if you're protecting someone.
