Winters knocking..what are your plans for the bike this winter?

Since winter will be upon most of us soon enough I was just wondering on your plans (if any)for the bike this winter.

 

In January, when winter really sets in here, I plan on pulling down the front end and polish the forks and trees. Thats something I have wanted to do for a while. The lower legs look like crap right now. While the fairing is off and if the money holds out I might go ahead and install the new gauge set-up from Ponch. I like the tach in there better then the three gauges originally offered. Also may rebuild my driving lights using LED bulbs instead of the incandescents and rewire the whole thing. Price is a concern though since the cost of each bulb is 112 bucks. Maybe by then I can find a cheaper set. Flanders G2 bars and extended SS throttle cables might make it into the mix this time too. That should just about wrap up the mods to the bike for a long time to come.

Ok the guy that lives in Florida is wondering what to do during the winter. That's funny. Ruffy we ride all year long up here, you guys in Florida are getting soft.

I plan on riding through the winter, like I did last year... unless this winter is like the one before last when snow stuck around for two months.

 

Fingers crossed that the snow behaves, and stays on the mountains!

First....I have to finish insulating and putting a heat source in the garage.(I'm NOT in the warm part!)

 

Then for the bikes.....

 

I plan on taking the best of the 2 bikes (the 83 VR "Blonde" and '84 Standard "Red")and putting those parts into my blonde...but make sure Red is stilll a decent bike for resale.

 

 

 

 

1. The clutch in Red is slipping. So I'm going to take good clutch out of blonde and put in Red. Then put Skydoc clutch upgrade into Blonde
   
2. put progressives in front forks of Blonde
   
3. Dingy's starter ground upgrade on both
   
4. install condor Brace on Blonde
   
5. put new tires from Red onto Blonde
   
6. take back rest from red and put on Blonde
   
7. figure out how to mount '86 arm rests on 83 Blonde
   
8. repair various plastic cracks, tabs etc
   
9. Paint for both
   
10. take upgraded stator out of Red and put into Blonde
    
11. stainless brake lines and possible delink for Blonde
    
12. solid motor mounts for Blonde
    
13. heavier battery cables for Blonde
    
14. move TCI to top of airbox on both
    
15. battery sensor/resistor mod on Blonde (already done on Red)
    
16. Replace/repair odometer on Red
    
17. repair small exhaust leak on Red
    
18. replace carb diaphrams on Blonde
    
19. re-cover or repair split at front seam of both seats
    
20. purchase needed cables & headsets to actually use driver/rider intercom
    
21. replace speakers in Blonde
    
22. R&R and lube rear end and driveshaft on both
    

Plus clean and polish everything I can!

 

 

Other than that...not much!

6) Making the touring pack removable so that I can go starglide.

7) Maybe a carb sync (never none this one before, shouldn't be to hard)

I plan on going to work / church / store and other places every day, just like at any other time of year. I cant stay at home just because it's cold,so I'll ride every day, as usual. I do plan to wear more layers of clothes.

Snow and die would be diffent. We get one or two days of that per year. In Jacksonville, Florida -- very unlikely.

I'm going to load the bike into the trailer and head south. Maybe even Florida but Texas for sure in Feb. I'll need to change the oil first though.

My plans for winter in order.

1. Ride till the snow is too deep to be able to get the bike out of the shed.

2. Build my receiver hitch.

3. Build accessories for new receiver.

4. Build trailer to pull.

5. Add 2nd bad boy horn.

6. Add more lights to bike.

 

If time and budget allow # 5 may turn into replacing bad boy air horn with real train horn.

 

I also like Kens #8 above, dechromeing. I hate chrome. (flame suit on)

If it is the standard "Jason" mod, it is a simple undo.

 

You will need 3 rubber plugs that fit over the sync ports on the carb boots. (3/16" I think)

 

Remove the 4 interconnected hoses between the carbs.

 

Plug the hose that goes up to vacuum sensor into #2 (Left Front) carb intake boot.

 

Plug three remaining ports on intake boots with rubber plugs.

I THINK Ken rides a second gen. It is a bit difference. I think he will need two of the vacuum caps and there is a hose on each side that would hook to the other port on each side. They go to the AIS system.

From what I can tell the PO removed the AIS system. He installed an air horn in it's place. I can see three or four hoses pluged off hanging off the bottom.

All RSVs have the 4 hoses hanging out the bottom. They are various drains and should not be plugged off. They have nothing to do with the AIS system. If the AIS truly has been removed, all you have to do is remove the tubes connecting the front and rear carb boots and replace them with 4 caps. Very simple.

well with help im going to try and get it into this storage place. pull the battery put more seafoam in the old girl.. maybe pull plastics off do some crack repair. sand prime paint. and i got a nice looking 1986 in sight..

I'm in the same area ... IMHO, it ain't all that warm and I sure don't like ridin in the rain...which we get a lot of around here as you know. Since weekends are the only time Nina & I can get out to ride, it don't happen all that often between now and next spring. My insurance has lapsed as of Oct 1st and I don't plan on re-insuring it again until mid april ... so, if/when we do get an opportunity to ride, it will be a day permit.

 

Now, as for what I'll be doing to the scoot over the winter...

 

Aside from doing the regular maintenance things...

Installing levelling links

Putting the stock size (150) tire back on the front

Putting stock mufflers back on (coz I forgot what it sounds like with them)

Installing a Clearview windshield

Adding more LED lighting

Replacing my sirius radio antenna ... it died I think

Power polishing the paint (I accidentally got a bit of clear overspray on the upper parts when I was repainting the roof of the truck a year ago) ... no biggie and unnoticeable...but I can feel it yanno... probably nobody else would.

Adding a few more "safety chrome" items (yet to be determined)

Possibly getting some pinstriping work done.

...and this list may grow as time passes LOL

Try going over the surfaces with a Mothers Clay Bar. I had enamel overspray on my RSV and car hood and it took it all off.

Speaking of de-chroming.... I'll be looking into getting the gas cap de-chromed. Don't like the idea of the leather cover and don't think paint would last.

Anyone powder coat their gas cap?

My riding season ends once they sand/salt the roads the first time. Riding season starts after a couple heavy rains in the spring.

Hmmmm..... if Gary N. has room on his trailer and wants riding company in February.... :-)

After Christmas ,I will be pulling the plastic off and doing some repairs to it and some paint,

 

While the plastic is off there are a few gaskets that I want to replace, a deep cleaning and some polish in places , the bike will be forsale in the spring. I have been picturing myself on a 2000 millenium edition and that's what I'm going to be riding next summer.
