1. I am thinking of buying a 1st gen on the other side of the country. Forgetting all the things that could go wrong with a new old bike, I am more concerned with all that could go wrong with the old old me. My question is: Is it reasonable to think that I could get on a bike there and enjoy the ride back. I'm a working stiff so I can enjoy the mountains but once on the plains and midwest I gotta keep at it. So am I dreaming or is that really possible? We're talking 2500 miles. I ride a Vstrom now. Have riden one 1st gen for a short ride one time and thought that it was a very comfortable well controlled ride. Its sporty for a cruiser. I have owned other dual sports and a Yam Vstar. The Vstrom has the knees bent too much for too long and no good hwy peg option. I do enjoy flicking it through the N Ga Mtns but it wouldn't hurt to handicap myself with a little more weight (on the bike, not me) and a little less agressive seating posture; maybe something a little more comfy with a backrest option. I envision that I would like to maybe swoop a little more ( at speed a lttle faster than criuse, rather than attack at something a little less than reckless) hence the 1st Gen for sportier cruising/touring. If you have some first hand relevance to offer; I've got my hearing aids turned up.
2. First off thanks to randy and laura for meeting us for supper in bristol on Good Friday. We had a nice evening with friends.Ramona and I meet with a log home mfg and viewed our dream retirement home.We were very impressed with the quality and hand hewn work.I called one of my banks up and was surprised that they financed new construction building with land. Now the hard part. I have thought all week while on vacation about all the reasons I should not do this (recession, job security, and being 50 years old with a mortgage starting). On the other hand (interest rates are low,we want to move, and besides our property is a good investment and a new home will grow in value).I don't know of any more prime real estate being mfg.People are building on the hillsides now and where ever they can find land.I thought about saving enough money to put a shell up under roof then finishing it little by little with cash but that would take about 10 years. I would have less time to enjoy it and my 10 year old son wouldn't get a chance to grow up there and enjoy fishing, swimming, the ball field, and all the other things lake front property has to offer.I have a meeting with several contractors to put together a turn key job and we will look at those numbers.I'm sure we will be shocked at the bottom line but 20 years from now those same numbers will be like small change.I may have to sell a few assets like a first gen or two.

4. As I mentioned before, I have been been laid off from my regular job since December. Now, don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed the time off and have gotten a bunch of motorcycle related projects completed on both my 86'Vr and 87'VRs as well as worked on quite a few other bikes. After more than 38 years as a Machinist I am happy to say that I still enjoy doing machine work, and especially enjoy it when I get to do the Engineering side of the coin as well. About a week ago I was approached to do some Engineering/ Machine work on a gas powered four wheel drive car. The bumpers and skid plates on this car were made of cheap plastic and were destroyed pretty quickly. I was given Cart Blanche to design some components that would be more durable and help protect the engine and drive train components. I used high grade Delrin and Stainless Steel and attached everything with S.S. hardware. I had no idea that these cars were so expensive ($400.00 to $1100.00 for a single car!) and I also didn't know that there would be a market for replacement parts. Since completing this project, I have had two more orders for parts, Boy, I sure would like to do this for a living! Earl
5. These pics are pretty good, I had to put them in a zip file as they were to large, but I think you may enjoy them. Ian

16. Thought I would post some of the activities going on around Athens on the weekend of Oct 18th. The Zip Line location does give a discount for groups. If there are enough interested I will contact them for the group rates. The Edom Festival of Arts will be something I think the ladies will really enjoy. For those who enjoy Cutting Horses there is a great show at the Fair Grounds. There is a mystery dinner theater performance that is always entertaining. If anyone needs additional information on any of these events let me know. The attachment is a pdf document and if you need a pdf reader to view it you can download one free from the web. Mavrick
17. Hi all, My wife and I are heading to the Poconos Mountains at the end of the month. We will be in Shawnee on Delaware for a week and I am wondering if anyone knows anythuing about the area fior things to see/do while we're there. We won't be riding the bikes out since my wife doesn't enjoy "long rides" anymore. Besides, riding together in the car gives us some time to enjoy each others company and talk. I considered trailering her Vulcan out, but figure it's not worth the hassle. There is a Harley dealer about an hour away that rents bikes, so we may do that for a day or two once we get there, but that all depends. I'm mainly just looking for options of what to see or do since this is our first trip up this way. We traded our Virginia Beach timeshere for a mountain retreat this year and are looking forward to it. She has asked about running into New York City for a day. Is there somewhere in between to catch a train or something into the city/ Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks, and ride safe.

20. The sheffield mine in Franklin was our last great hope for fame and fortune. A new cabin and early retirement hung in the balance. The girls would get mad every time we ask ARE WE RICH YET? We did enjoy a little hill climbing on the first gens. No one got rich on this deal but Yammer Dan walked away seeing dollar signs. Something about opening up The Clay County Mine??
21. I bought me an 86 VR (38,200miles) a few weeks ago on ebay. We took the truck up to Weastern PA to get the bike. I rode the bike back to NC and it was a somewhat uncomfortable ride (compared to the 08 RSV) but as is any ride I enjoyed it. Now that I've had time to explore the bike I have some questions/ issues I need some assistance with. 1. I noticed both tires (Continental on the front Dunlop on the rear) are scalloped which was causing a bouncy feel to the front end. I am going to replace the tires but what causes the scalloped condition? 2. The starter has a lot of hesitation when it starts especially when it's hot. It will turn, pause, turn, pause, turn, then start. Someone at work had mentioned the brushes may be worn. Any other ideas? The owner replaced the stock battery with an 'Odyssey' battery about a year ago. 3. When adjusting the air in the rear shock it doesn't maintain the pressure. The ride back from PA was a bit annoying due to the squeaking and vibration of the console, the front end 'bounce', and monkey butt! I replaced the rubber grommets and the squeaky noise and vibration is gone. For the most part the bike runs well. It will definitely move when you roll on the throttle. In fact in 1st and 2d gear it feels like the front end leaves the ground. I've been reading the forums but there is so much to read. If anyone can point me to specific threads that cover some of the things I've listed or other items of interest it would be greatly appreciated. I've always thought the 1st Gen was a 'FUGLY' bike but the more I see them up close the better they look. I had to have one to play with. The more I tinker with the bike the more I enjoy it. I also enjoy reading the info here. Anywho, thanks and ride safe! Semper Fi, Jerry
