  1. Im not happy with my stock headlight. Thinking about a xenon or a hid conversion kit costs around 125.00. Any other bulbs i should try before i spend the money on one of these kits?
  2. I have the Venture Line bumper lights on my 87 and i bought some mini wedge LED bulbs #2060-0006 from Drag Specialties $2.95 @. They project less light because of the angle they sit. So i bought new lens because of the color loss and that brighten things up some. LEDs are good if they are used in straight direction.
  3. any information about LED's that can be used to replace "peanut bulbs" for some of the aftermarket 1st gen lights. I dont know that I have ever seen anything like what I'm describing. I have to ease the power consumption that the bulbs take and I'm curious to know if there are direct replacements that will fit into the exsisting bulb receptacles.....Thanks for any guidance
  4. Several threads here got me thinking about LEDs and our bikes. After looking a the price of LED boards for the 2nd generation RSV, I was in shock, they are IMHO EXPENSIVE, but probably worth it. Not wanting to spend the dollars on lamps with unadvertised light output and being a reasonably frugal guy, I looked for an alternative. I did some research and found the following lamps are installed in our bikes from the factory. cp = Candle Power. Brake/Tail: 1157 with a Ba15d base: 32/3cp Rear Turn: 7507A with a PY21W base: 22.2cp Front Turn/Running: (Unknown bulb) with an unknown base (Still researching): 24/2.2 cp So a quick look in Sylvania Automotive Lamp Catalog I found the following bulbs with SIMILAR bases 2357LL with a Ba15d base: 40/3cp (the LL stands for Long Life. On close inspection it is actually a Krypton bulb.) 2357A with Ba15d base: 30/2.2cp (the A is for Amber coating on the bulb) So I put a 2357LL in my Brake/Tail lamp housing. It was a 25% improvement in light output on the brake light, from 32cp to 40cp!!!!! No improvement on the running light, 3cp to 3cp. BUT it is a longer life bulb. Rated life is 2,000 hours on the brake light and 10,000 hours on the running light. I then put 2357A bulbs in all of the turn signal housings, but I had to remove one of the indexing pins from them. IIRC the front and rear required different pin removal so CHECK it before you do it!!! I used a pair of small diagonal cutting pliers and cleaned it up with a file. If my math is correct I had a 35% increase in light output on the turn signals and a 36% increase in light output on the front running lights. Total cost: $9.40 (minus 10% as my local auto parts store gives a military discount) plus sales tax. WOOOOO HOOOOOO!!!!! this is for two packages of two 2357A bulbs and one package of two 2357 bulbs, so I have a spare brake/tail lamp. I will try to give it to one of my H-D riding friends. So the upgrade cost me less than $10 which is quite a few dollars less than even one LED board and as an added plus they available at all auto parts stores so I did not have to pay for shipping and wait for the brown truck to arrive. Almost instant gratification. I have not seen where the LED boards list the light output (if you know this, please point it out), so I cannot compare the output levels with my inexpensive bulbs until I park next to someone with the LEDs in their bike. The LEDs have a longer life span. The LEDs also have a sharper on and off curve, which should make you more visible when using your brakes or turn signals. The LEDs require you put in a load resistor so your turn signals flash at the normal rate (there goes the power savings), or you must find an electronic flasher unit, at an additional cost, which I have not yet found but they must be made by somebody. With the money I did not spend on the LED boards, I will put that to my first set of replacement tires.........or buy several tanks of gas. Your comments are requested. UPDATE #1: I found two other bulbs that will work as tail lights, but not in the turn signals without changing the lenses as they are not offered in amber. The first is the 3496. It offers 43 CP on high and 3 CP on low. On high it yields a 31.25% increase over stock 1157 at 32 CP verses a 25% increase for the 2357LL at 40 CP but at a cost... they only have a rated live of 600 hours on the bright filament and 5,000 hours on the low, verses the 2357LL with 2,000 on the bright filament and 10,000 on the low.... also locally they are priced at $3.59 per bulb while the 2357LL are priced at $3.44 for two bulbs.... To me, the increased output of 3 CP over the 2357LL is not worth the shorter service life. The second bulb is the H1157 offered by Candlepower (Which is owned by Daniel Stern) (the H is for Halogen)and probably made by Narva. It has a 107 CP bright filament, and a 25 CP low filament!!!!!! But don't run off an buy them yet!!!!! Compared to the 1157 or 2357LL bulb the bright filament is 234% and 168% brighter respectively, but all that light comes at a cost. Only 400 hours service life and all the heat it produces MIGHT melt your tail light housing. Sorry, but I'm not going to test it on my bike!!!!!! OH and now for the bad news, they are priced at $10.35 plus shipping.... each.... The big draw back IMHO is the MUCH brighter running light. It puts out a whopping 25 CP which could be confused for a brake light by some drivers.... this running light is 733% brighter than all the other lamps!!!!!! Like I said, I will not be trying this lamp, but if you do, please provide some feedback!!!!! UPDATE #2: I have put the 3496 bulbs in the brake and turn signals on the rear and they are working fine!!!!!!!!! To bad the 3496 does not come in amber..... or I would use them in the front of this bike. UPDATE #3 I installed a 15" LED stop light under my trunk. I got it from Innovative Light in the factory seconds section HERE for under $8.... plus shipping. I got the slimline in red with retroreflective accents..... not in stock as of this posting but you can check them from time to time. UPDATE #4 This breaks the Poor mans tip but I replaced the stop/tail light with the Street Magic 100 LED Genesis II LED Tail Light from Custom Dynamics HERE and I am impressed!!!!! quick on and off time, wide viewing angle and it is BRIGHT, but it does break the bank........at $90 when I got it.....
  5. I found a part number for that weird rear turn signal bulb on the 2nd gen Venture, and, I suppose, the RSTD also. 7507 Also referred to as the BAU15s on this website: http://autolumination.com/1156_1157.htm You can see these bulbs down near the bottom of the page. They also have LED replacements, if you want to actually DO that. I got the impression during my searches that this bulb is used in some European cars, like the BMW and the Porsche. How it ended up in our bikes is anybodys guess, maybe the Japanese designers got a helluva deal on the bulbs and sockets. Someone somewhere has asked if there were any bulb numbers for this bike, and this was the only one I didnt have till now. Hope this is of some use.
  6. I hope this post isn't being beat to death but here goes anyway. Just installed a 15 inch LED light bar on the rear of my 88 VR and it works and looks great. I am intent on improving rear visibility both during the day and at night short of wearing a yellow reflective vest. I am just curious as to how much amp draw one can expect the taillight circuit to handle without ruining the computer. I was looking for replacements for the two 1157 dual filament bulbs that might draw a little less amp, but have not been able to locate a suitable substitute. I suppose there isn't such a bulb. Each 1157 bulb draws 2.1 amps, I think anyway, and maybe 2.7 amps (don't know for sure) when the brake light is activated. Double that for two bulbs and that is perhaps as much as 5.4 amps. No wonder the voltmeter drops so radically when the brake light is on. Has anyone modified their scoots like I have and would they have any advice on how to reduce the rear brake light circuit draw just a tad? I did purchase two led bulbs and installed them. Even with two led bulbs and the 15 inch led light bar, the computer warning light was on.
  7. OK -- I know I saw a thread on replacement bulbs for the passing lights on the RSV 2nd Gens. Darned if I can find it. I just need to know the best, most-liked, awesome bulbs that you guys have seen so I can replace mine. The bulb is not listed inthe parts catalog from Yamaha (at least that I could see). Thanks in advance for your assistance.
  8. Im going to order new passing light bulbs since im going to rewire the passing lights soon. I was also thinking about going to a led bulb. Since I am not disassembling it right now, I need to know what bulb size (type) is in there now so I can have it on hand. Thanks........
  9. How many VR members does it take to change a lightbulb? 1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed. 14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently. 7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs. 27 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing light bulbs. 53 to flame the spell checkers. 41 to correct spelling/grammar flames. 6 to argue over whether it's "lightbulb" or "light bulb".. 2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is "lamp". 15 know-it-alls who claim *they* were in the industry, and that "light bulb" is perfectly correct. 156 to email the participant's ISPs complaining that they are in violation of their "acceptable use policy". 109 to post that this group is not about light bulbs and to please take this discussion to a lightbulb group 203 to demand that cross posting to hardware forum, off-topic forum, and lightbulb group about changing light bulbs be stopped. 111 to defend the posting to this group saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts *are* relevant to this group. 306 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique, and what brands are faulty. 27 to post URL's where one can see examples of different light bulbs. 14 to post that the URL's were posted incorrectly and then post the corrected URL's. 3 to post about links they found from the URL's that are relevant to this group which makes light bulbs relevant to this group. 12 to post to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy. 4 to suggest that posters request the light bulb FAQ. 44 to ask what is a "FAQ". 4 to say "didn't we go through this already a short time ago?" 143 to say "do a Google search on light bulbs before posting questions about light bulbs". 1 forum lurker to respond to the original post 6 months from now and start it all over again.... :rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf:
  10. Enough's been said about repairing the computer module on this board, but i think there's one thing that's not being mentioned when the dash is out and exposed to the elements.... :-) Replace all the illumination bulbs with new ones, and save yourself the trouble of replacing a burnt out bulb later on down the road.. Why put a repaired dash that's 20+ years old back in without replacing all the bulbs which are pro'bly 20 years old as well? They're the same #158 bulbs used in auto dashes, and can be found at any local auto parts store. They run about $1.50 each and there's about 7 of them. Do it and save yourself some work.....
  11. I'm going to update the front lighting on my RSV. The bike is currently equipped with the stock headlamp, Yamaha light bar with standard lights, and a set of PIAA aux lights mounted on the bottom of the forks. The PIAA lights were installed with a fabricated mount which has proved to be inadequate, as the lights cannot be properly adjusted/ hold adjustment. I'm considering several options: 1. Replace the aux lights with moto-lights http://secure.electronicart.com/www_motolight_com or these: http://www.shopatron.com/product/product_id=PIA74238/353.0 2. Swap out the existing bulbs for brighter after-market bulbs (PIAA, Silverstone, etc.); if I do this, any suggestions for specific makes and models of bulbs? What fits the Yamaha aux lights (H3?)? 3. Install an H.I.D. light and drop the aux lights altogether. What bulb replaces our headlight? Does the high-beam/low-beam H4 work in our bikes/any bikes. Any suggestions as to make and model? I'm looking at these: http://www.xtralights.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1349 Any thoughts? Would appreciate comments from those of you who have looked to or installled any of these options, or examinged these questions?
  12. Has anybody in here ever replaced their bulbs with LED bulbs? The tail lights are simple to find replacement bulbs but the turn signal bulbs would have to be made at a right angle to point to the front or rear of the bike. I have seen the blade type for the instrument panel and marker lights. The marker light again would have to be made with a right angle. Any suggestions? I know the VR's are lacking in the power output department and figure I could save some wattage for my trailer and other accessories if I can swap in LED bulbs. In the mean time I'm talking to a guy who says he can rebuild the rectifier and upgrade the stator for more output. Just have to find a couple used specimens to take him so he can get started.
  13. Ok, have 2 problems. Bike is a '93 VR. First problem:Radio channel display flashed rapidly and lost sound. Now no channel display or sound. The little red light that shows power on is lit, but nothing coming out of unit. Have had problems with radio losing sound with channel display remaining lit showing station that I was listening to, then will come back on and scare the you know what out of me. It will remain "off" for a few minutes, or it might be 2 or 3 days before it comes back on, or anywhere in between. Just a "wild a-- guess", did the radio give up the ghost or what??? Second problem: The bike has the wrap around rear lights. The lights are in a 2 bulb assembly and 1 of the assemblies keeps burning both bulbs out in less than an hour after replacing the bulbs, which btw is a pain in the you know what. A side note, if you have the same set-up, you need to buy at least twice the amount of bulbs needed because you will end up breaking probably 2 or 3 of them. I want to be able to keep these lights lit because it gives the bike an unbalanced look, and I am unbalanced enough already! :bang head: Any ideas?? Thanks Don H.
  14. Has anybody found a cheap source for bulk LED Wedge Bulbs that fit into #161 or #168 sockets? Should look something like this: http://www.customdynamics.com/Images/4802-honda.jpg I am think about converting all my additional lighting to LED's to free up some capacity for the trailer lighting. Generally these seem to run around $5 to $9 a piece, but I think that must be a tremendous mark-up, especially when you are looking for 20-25 bulbs in amber and red. Thanks in advance, Klaus
