If the glass is still flat and just cracked. I believe Autozone or O'riley's sells a material that can be cut to shape and then glues to the exist mirror. Poor mans fix.

carb adjustments
van avery replied to ltl's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Have you sprayed starting fluid around the carbs and intakes and see if idle increases? You might have a bad vacuum leak. There are Orings under the intake boots that can go bad mine ran better after being replaced. Make sure the carbs are all the way down in the intake boots. Have you removed the YICS system and installed plugs and are the vacuum plugs in good shape ( all 4) ? The center two are hard to get to but if they are off it makes a big difference. You said you soaked the carbs in cleaner. Did you blow thorough all the passages to make sure they are open? Are the carb diaphrams in good shape and sliders moving smoothly. If you can get it running without the air filter look down and see if the sliders are moving about the same. Have you sync'ed the carbs? Should be seeing around 9 to 9 1/2 inches of vacuum. Have you replace the plugs and maybe cut off about 1/4" of the spark plug cables at the coil ends they can get corroded. Hope some of this helps. Good luck:thumbsup: -
I'm reworking a 1986 Aspencade SEi now and it does ride smoother than the Venture. This was the second year fuel injection. 1st year was the 85 LTD model. Alot of the body work on the SEi is different than the carb models ( '86 Aspencade and interstate). I second the motion on the SEi having more wiring than a space shuttle. The center of gravity and seat seeem much lower that the venture. The left side cover on these tend to fall off so if you buy the bike replace the rubber grommets because a left side cover ( used) is over $100. The plastic on the goldwing is better ( thicker) than the venture. I tend to hit my shins on the motor when stopping at corners ( haven't ridden it very much the bike is not licenced). Good luck

83 venture royale new to me
van avery replied to Walnutz's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Welcome to the site. THis will be the best $12 you will spend. The temp on an 83 seems to always show hotter than I liked but from what I read it seems to be more that the temperature indicator on 83's seem to show high normally (close to the red). It did on the two I had. Try a little "wetter water" in the cooling system It helped a little. Need to do testing to find out weather its the regulator/ rectifier or the stator thats bad. Maybe either or both. Check pages 7-9 thru 7-11 in the service manual. http://labs.trunkful.com/vrmanuals/index.cfm Make sure the connections from the stator to the R/R are good. Others have installed a manual switch to turn on the fan earlier. There was a post a couple years ago about a lower temp fan switch but I could not find it available anywhere ( believe it was out of production). Good luck with your new ride. -

I have been working on a 86 goldwing and the desicant looked just like yours. Put it on aluminum foil lined pan a baked it at 350 F for 5 minutes and it turned a nice light blue. The thread I was working from in the goldwing docs also said that Harbor Frieght carries the desicant for around 5 bucks if you want to replace. BTW the inlet filter (foam rubber) had degraded badly and some had traveled through the compressor so make sure to check it out too. -
If its like my Samsung with the freezer on the bottom the drain line in the back inside of the refridgerator has frozen up. Need to empty the refrig, pull the shelves and remove the back wall and defrost the drain line . I had ice buildup in the bottom of the refridgerator compartment where the water would collect. When the defrost timer defrosted the coils the water could not drain out correctly. It took quite awhile to defrost the line. Make sure you have plenty of ice chests to store your food.

carb float hight
van avery replied to gscbertrand's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Here is a good thread about setting the floats. I've used it a couple times and the 1 " works very well. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=66468 -
You might have a major vacuum leak. Spray around the intake boots and all the YISC vacuum tubes with starting fluid or WD40 and see if your idle increases. If the YICS system has been removed check the four vacuum port plugs. These are not where your sync tubes hook up in the intake tubes but they are bigger ports in the head itself , the front left and rear right cylinders are on the inboard side. The other thing may be the O-rings under the intake boots. Good luck

Here in Brazoria Texas we have the Brazoria County Cavalry. We ride out to honor Military and First responders almost every weekend. We also do funerals honorings and escorts for when requested. Does your heart good to honor and personally thank these ladies and gentelmen for what they give up and do to protect our freedoms and safety. And show them there is support at home. In the last 6 years we have honored over 800. Here is a link to our site. http://brazoriacountycavalry.org/main/

Surging, low speed miss
van avery replied to Bob Myers's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You might try a seafoam soak on the carbs. Drain the gas from each bowl then with a spray can of Seafoam put the little red tube into the drain line of each ( use a rag to keep down the back spray). Use about 1/4 can in each carb and close the drain valve and let it sit a couple days. Might save pulling the carbs and cleaning. Be ready to change the plugs again. I also run a couple of tanks of preminum gas after the soak and it helped. Also, check the ends of the plug wires. Screw the spark plug cap off and check the connection. I had a corrosion problem in one. Good luck. -
I got some graphics from http://winnerscyclegraphics.com/standard_kits.html for my wing about two years ago and they still look good and went on easy.

Have you sprayed starting fluid around the carbs and intakes to see if you have a vacuum leak? Don't forget the orings between the intake boots and the cylinders. -
Welcome to the site and good luck with the new to you old bike. You might want to clean the "block" ground from the battery it located in the right front of the engine. The 83 I worked over after setting about 3 years needed cleaning. Also , if it turns over slowly you might want to invest in a starter motor off a 2 nd gen with 4 brushes, makes a big difference in starting. Make sure you have good battery. If the voltage is low it will crank alot but won't fire up. You may want to pull the small round cover on the left side (sitting on the bike), and use a wrench to turn the engine over by hand just to make sure its free. There is a great group of knowlegable people here that are willing to give great advice. If you have a problem ask. Good luck and post pictures.

A lil trouble !!!
van avery replied to bikercouple's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Is it turning over quickly or slowly? Make sure the battery is up and in good condition. These bike are very picky about the voltage/power from the battery. The main cables were undersized. The 83 I worked over after setting several years fought starting up without a good battery. If you are jumping from a car or truck make sure you don't start the car or truck up just jump it. Good luck -

Here in Texas. I was using Progressive until this year. Had my agent check and Dairyland was alittle cheaper. They handled both companies so I got a heads up compairision, and I only carry liability on my older bikes. Also, I had them check and recieved a discount for being part on the Ventureriders.com, " An established riders group". I believe alot of motorcycle shops sell Dairyland insurance.

Hesitation
van avery replied to phoenix rider's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Have you sprayed WD40 or starting spray around the carbs bases. If you find an area that the rpms jump up slightly you have a leak. Mine was not running right untill I found a vacuum leak in the Orings under the intake boots. Replaced them and the bike ran right after that. Good luck -
