  1. Don't trust the bottle for radiator liquid level. My 83 did same, and turns out the hose from the rad to the bottle was collaspsed internally. pressure from hot rad would open tube and allow coolant to flow to bottle under pressure, but would not let coolant back to rad from bottle as engine cooled. After all coolant spilled at bottle overflow, turns out radiator was low level and ran excessive hot.
  2. Does the horn work when you have instrument failure? If not, I would suspect power problem on brown wire from key switch. Possibly in the switch itself. If horn does work, then start chasing down all the ground connections in the front sub faring.
  3. well I noticed a differance when I enter thru the Home tab, as I usually do http://www.venturerider.org/modules/Jig/index.php then read a post, then Back then Refresh, the post does NOT mark as read. If I click on QuickLink/ Todays Post, then read a post, then Back, then Refresh, the post DOES mark as read. Not sure the difference, but I dont like the new way, having to click on Todays Post after already accessing the site, but if necessary I coud get use to it.
  4. Just found this thread, thought something was wrong with my browser. I like the old way. I am another one that just enters at the home page, and all the previous "read" posts forms a dividing line for what is new since last login. (typically just a few hours ago), now I went 4 pages back before I realized all this was not really new. PS.I typically use my browser 'back' and 'refresh' and a post i was just at shows read, not any longer. My reason for this edit is when I went back and refresh from this orginal post, it did not show read, even after I re-read it, then back and refresh again. No I do not like the new way I have also had issue with the more button, but not one to complain...(since Gary started it) PSS. this is second edit, I found edit details(this post was edited for..)did not show on the post when I left "reason"blank-no sign that the post was not orginal, the second try adding info the reason block
  5. WOW, please be aware that the 83 is known to crack/break the frame where the bottom of the rear shock support mounts to the side rails. With the amount of corrosion you have, you need to check this area very well before you ride. There is a writeup somewhere to add gussetts, but involves a tear down of the rear end.
  6. You likely have the splined washer installed wrong See post where I got it wrong and Rocket corrected me http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=48414
  7. no, not without serious modifications, as the current flasher on your 87 is built into the 41R relay unit, that controls other operations as well. LED's will cause a fast flash rate with your current flasher, unless you use load resistors, but this defeats current (amp)savings LED's provide.
  8. Here is some pics when Willie, son Lucas, and sister were in Bowling Green KY in Feburary. It was a great show.
  9. possible kick stand switch even though cmu seems to work. connect all 3 wires at the switch to each other.
  10. The warning indicators are controlled by magnetic reed switch/s in the middle of wire coil/s. The current thru the wire coils to the effected lamps creates enough magnetic field to activate the reed switch/s. The only practical way, IMO, to maintain the warning indicators would be to remove the reed switches, and in their place install another detector circuit that closes an output where the reed switches were. Here I modified my CMS for future remote control of the reed switch circuits. The plan is to install a photo light detector in front/ inside of the effected light, and the photo detector circuit would complete the original reed switch circuit. (Have not completed the photo detector circuit yet) http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=58292
  11. wineguard uses a decent program to find your area, list your channels, and help you choose the proper antenna(their models) http://www.winegard.com/kbase/antenna_selector.php You can start with zip, then move your pin exactly to your house
  12. Temporarly disconnect the side stand switch and connect all 3 wires together(bike side). Make very sure in neutral before attempting start. The switch has 2 contacts, one for the side stand indicator, and the other for the ignition interlock, which prevents operation if side stand down and in gear. Also possible the interlock relays are causing issues in the headlight area. wiring diagram rewrote my member http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42358 can also find other manuals in the first gen tech library http://www.venturerider.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=90
  13. The thermo flasher uses a bi-metallic strip, that is designed to use a specified current flow (specified # of bulbs) to achieve a normal flash rate. It works by heating up, due to current out to the lights, until it flexes, and breaks/opens the circuit, turning the lights off, then the strip cools, and flexes back, remaking, closing the circuit, turning the lights back on. At a lesser current flow, equivalent to failure of 1 light, the strip heated up enough to break, but was NOT hot enough to require a normal cooling cycle. After a shorter than normal cooling cycle, the strip closes, starting the cycle over and causing a fast flash rate. If you pay special attention, you will notice that the light on time is about the same, but the light off time is faster, when there is a bulb out. At very low current flow (such as 100% LEDs), the strip may not get hot enough to open, and the lights may remain on constant without flashing. At a higher than normal current flow, (more bulbs or add trailer), the strip will be hotter than normal, and require a longer cooling cycle, resulting in a slower flash rate. Thermo flasher typically rated for 4-6 incandescent bulbs (6 on auto and 2 on trailer). Don’t forget the dash indicator is also incandescent (unless replaced) and a normal turn involves 3 bulbs on vehicle or 4 if trailer attached. Changing the vehicle bulbs to LED will have effect, unless load equalizers (bypass resistors) are used (although this defeats any power savings gained from LEDs). Better to replace thermo flasher with solid state flasher, but then loose bulb out warning of fast flashing. likely due to function of converter
  14. http://images1.mcmaster.com/Contents/gfx/large/7845kp1l.png?ver=3940239 This type of conduit plug at mcmaster would work well if you can access the inside to tighten wingnut.
  15. :sign yeah that:consider that valve to be bent and to replace it. Then reshim
  16. You seem to have isolated to the correct area. So this begs the question, what changes when the RR is plug in? Possible damage to the RR connector allowing pins to bend/short to other pins? You also mention you are unable to find the stator connector. Lots of folks remove the connector due to overheating damage and solder the wires direct. Maybe overheat damage continued to the RR connector....
  17. Thanks Brian Please put me down for two, 7" patches

    Ooma VOIP

YEP, been using it for 2 years now. Buy the machine once then just pay federal fees about $3.60/month. Must pay per credit card account. Works great. Recommend to anyone with broadband internet connection. wired up to existing phone jack in the house, and makes all the rest of the phone jacks active to work with all your normal corded or cordless phones. I love the ability to look on line at entire call history, made or received, change caller id info of friends/reletives so instead of numbers, the name you entered shows up on caller id, and if you buy into a preminum package you can even program a blacklist, that blocks unwanted calls from getting thru. Only issue is could not get old style fax machine to work, even after tech support. Have not tried a newer fax yet.

  21. Do the pin shadows mean anything? Seems some are darker than others, and Hillrider's with pin in Iowa but location in Georgia is black.
  22. Welcome to the site As for your CDI, actually TCI on ’83 (transistor controlled ignition), the ONLY year that worked on the ’83 is the ’83. Best option rather than putting in a suspect 30 year old part, is an aftermarket ignition until many of us have been using. Here is a link to current group buy http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?threadid=76731 As for manuals, there is some links for free on line access. They are in tech library> first gen tech library>guides, parts diagrams http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&key=e24a6de127caafe43f772df085fb6605&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.venturerider.org%2Fforum%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D3384&v=1&libid=1365949479651&out=http%3A%2F%2Flabs.trunkful.com%2Fvrmanuals%2Findex.cfm&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.venturerider.org%2Fforum%2Fforumdisplay.php%3Ff%3D90&title=First%20Gen%20Service%20Manuals%20-%20VentureRider.Org&txt=http%3A%2F%2Flabs.trunkful.com%2Fvrmanuals%2Findex.cfm&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_13659494818672 This is already worth the $12 membership
  23. I got these a couple years back at Star Motorcycle (independent shop) Bowling Green Ky. Looks like they have moved to a new location from where they were, here is their facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Star-Motorbike-ATV-Bowling-GreenKY-42101/101839959856301 I believe that all these resistor plugs can be opened, and attempts made to clean resistor corrosion with pencil eraser, many small parts and springs, found it easier to just replace them. Spring typically seems to be sprung from overheat/ corrosion I did pre-emtively open my new caps, and coated the spring with dielectric grease to prevent corrosion. Have worked great since.
  24. Only when in a forum or in a thread. If just on home page, it is not there
