91 vr electrical problems
bkuhr replied to painterman67's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Almost guarantee that the battery terminals are corroded under the battery clamps, creating partial high resistance connection. Disconnect terminals, clean(sand shiny with sandpaper), and reattach. -
Help identifying and finding a part

I am using the battery minder plus, and is specifically is rated to maintain multiple batteries, on the condition that they are the same type (AGM) and same state of charge (charged) when hooked up. Attached link to the users manual. I would expect battery tender to work with same conditions. http://www.batteryminders.com/content/manuals/plus_models.pdf

I had an XJ750 Seca. Pretty sure I still have the wiring diagram somewhere. Will have to look for it if you still want it

I do like to 'carpet look' you have on the red, but overall the red is just too bright from me, and I am on blue. Would not mind if you spiffed blue up a little, only if you have the gumption

Sparkplug caps
bkuhr replied to Patmac6075's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Pic is the caps I used, they actually fit a little better. I got them from a little private MC dealer in town, STAR Motorcycle. You might call around, or order on line. http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/130977705485?lpid=82 Cant remember assembly order, but I think there were 2 disks, one on each end of the resistor. I do know final spec to ohm out your caps is 10K ohm -
HELP help please... poppings backfires hesitation
bkuhr replied to biofractal's topic in Watering Hole
I also tried to clean my jets with a very small wire, but in "forcing(turning)" the wire thru the jets, I actually, unintentionally, enlarged the jets and caused issues with running performance. Ended up buying new jets to get every thing right. Just saying -
as for the ignition, most likely you have a defective tci, which may be repairable but replacing bad diodes, search for tci diode repair. Best option is to replace the old tci with new style programmable ignition unit. We have been using one from ingitech that works well. Member Dingy has been selling them. Another possibility is the spark plug boots have resistor inside them, and frequently get corroded. Unscrew from plug wire and ohm out. You could also have defective coils...

Running rich , poor spark r/f
bkuhr replied to madirishman13's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My first guess assuming good carbs and spark, is sync is out of adjustment. -
Don, So sorry for your loss. I also had to put my 2 dogs down last winter. Hardest thing to do. The vet did offer option to purchase a plaster paw print of your pet, which I have on my dresser and rub it every day. Recommend everyone see if their vets offer something similar, it sure helps the hurt.

If you pulled these entire 6 pin plug with the B/W wire at the TCI, then you also disconnected the ignition pickups. this plug needs to be connected. Sounds like a side stand switch issue. connect all 3 wires at the side stand together. If this fails connect the B/W wire at the TCI to ground to bypass the safety devices. do not leave like this!

sparks per revolution: RPM mystery
bkuhr replied to tz89's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
But the ignition pickups are crank driven, not cam driven to get the 1 spark per 2 rev. we do have 1 spark per crank rev, or 2 sparks per 4 cycle,-cycle -
Not sure if this is true or bogus, but I think better safe than sorry-and good reason to be packing. In summary: Don't flash headlight at on-coming car with lights off, as they may chase you down to kill you!

I would remove and clean the connections on the battery, then reconnect them. sound like corrosion under the connector

I am a little concerned of stated 2nd gear issue. To try to clear things up, the 83 had 2 separate issues 1. the engine would skip out of second under power due to worn/soft transmission parts, and would get so bad, rider would just skip 2nd -one or other engine may have already been upgraded for this issue-should be stamps near engine vin(punch parks)indicating repair 2. You are unable to shift up past a certain gear-could be 2nd, due to pins fall out of shift segment. -Easy fix to upgrade shift segment without transmission repair/replacement.

I set a setting in the phone to 'NEVER delete email from server'( email server settings on phone). Then I can pull up email on phone, and still have same email available on puter later. Not currently having issue with VR loading, but seems last time I did I ended up deleting browser history and cookies to clear issue.

Harbor Freight tool report
bkuhr replied to dna9656's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Pulling valve springs with head attached is taking a chance valve will fall thru and ruin your test for the second valve, as well as ability to rotate motor any more to test other cylinders. This would be ok if you first filled the cylinder with rope to hold the valves up, if just replacing springs/keepers, but would defeat the test you are trying. If just wanting to try to dislodge something, I might suggest, when air is blowing in cylinder, you hit on assembled valve stem with rubber hammer. Will not require very hard hits. This will cause the valve to open a little then slam shut again, releasing air burst thru the valve port-intake or exhaust. You will likely have air bleed around the piston rings into the pan, but you should also be able to determine if a valve will not completely close/seal. Ensure the cylinder being worked on has the piston at BTC, as it likely will be with air applied, pushing down, unless it was unable to rotate due to your issue, then rotate the other way so the piston is down before you hammer a valve into the piston and cause new damage.
