  1. Nope, they just snapped right in and left no gaps.
  2. I gently popped out the lower vents on my '85 to see why the vents won't stay open. Well, no wonder, there's nothing there to keep'em open! So, I took plain ol' rubber bands (black is better) and hooked them around the snap-tabs and across the vents. Works better than new! Don't overdo it with the bands though. You wouldn't want to stress the plastic parts. Check out the pictures.
  3. Oops, no clips on this '85. However, I found a VERY simple fix that I'll post on the "Poor Man's Fix" thread with picture. Thanks anyway.
  4. BINGO! That's the answer I was looking for. Thanks!!
  5. I have the same problem and I know I'll have to resolder the connections when it's too cold to ride. However, to get me by until then, I just took a nylon tie and cinched it around the plug and the closest fairing component. Temporary fer sur, but it has worked ever since.
  6. Those 1st gen lower fairing vents tend to flop shut every chance they get. Anybody got an idea how to stiffen them up so they'll stay open? Thank you, but no super glue tips please.
  7. tquote=squidley;248022] 1000 rpm, I wouldn't go much lower than that as the oil pressure when it's hot isn't very good. The extra rpm keeps oil headed up top and will keep you that much more into the power range on takeoff. That makes sense. Actually, a closer look at the tach puts it closer to 900 rather than 800. I'm so used to older twin bangers that I forgot that engines like these are a totally different animal. I guess I'll kick'er up another 100. Thanks guys, you've come through again!
  8. What are you guys thinking the best idle speed is for the '85 VR. 800 just seems a bit high to me. How 'bout it?
  9. GULP! 144 BUCKS! Well, I guess THIS cheapskate has shown his true colors, and I DON'T mean GREEN. Oh well, maybe I'll check the "Poor Man Tip and Fixes" threads, or quit complaining and get used to the wiggle. Thanks though. Actually, I can machine one that's as good as the Superbrace. I was hoping there was one MUCH heavier out there somewhere.
  10. Yeah, tire is okay. You know how it is, wiggle the bars in a 2mph turn and it wants to keep wiggling. I really believe it's just a simple case of fork twist vs. several hundred pounds of hardware. I'm sure a heavy duty brace would help a little. A little would be better than what I have. My Goldwings all suffered the same symptoms.
  11. Boy! I worked out all the little issues with my '85 save one. That irritating, sloppy front end wiggle while making tight parking lot turns. I hate that! Is there a GOOD fork brace out there in wiggle land that will tighten things up a bit?
  12. This could be VERY much help. Thankyaveramu-u-uch!!!!!! E.P.
  13. Hey man, I'll pay a lot more than freight if you find it. I appreciate it very much!!!!
  14. Okay, I found an antenna connection problem. But now I would like to go with a hand held mic rather than the helmet mount. My bike has a single antenna system which I'm converting to a duel system. I'd like to seperate the CB from the rest of the system and plug directly into the CB with the new antenna and mic. The CB mic plug is a 5 pin and a hand mic that ai have is a 4 pin. Question, are 5 pin mics a special breed or would Radio Shack have any that would work?
  15. I'll give that a shot and see what happens.
  16. Well, here we go again with a stupid CB/AM-FM problem. I tried out the sound system on on my '85 for the first time since I bought the bike (replaced a broken antenna). Radio and CB lights up and all buttons and knobs operate as they should, tape player sounds great, but no CB action at all and reception is almost zero on the AM-FM (as though no antenna). The antenna coax has continuity, both pos. and ground. I'm wondering what component I should check first. Any ideas guys? Come on boys....restore my hearing for me.
  17. Just my opinion, but my experience with adjusting 4 bangers is having separate gauges (on a common manifold) for each carb is best. Because, you can adjust #1 and then after #2 is adjusted, #1 gives a different reading. Get #1 & #2 sinced, then after #3 is done, 1 & 2 are usually higher than what you originally had, and so on. Tach is fair, Vacuum is good, mercury is best. Hey! Just an opinion (and we ALL know what an opinion is like, right?)
  18. By the way, if you want more rumble, just bore holes around the tube. But, start out small because you can always make them bigger. You can also lower the volumn by plugging some of the holes with sheet metal screws. So there, you ol' rusty pipes out there!
  19. Well, here goes nothing. Not OEM, but not wasted either.
  20. OKAY, OKAY I GET IT!! Man, there must me a lot of rusty mufflers out there. I'll get some pics today. What was I thinking anyway...........
  21. My '85 muffler tips rusted out and since the rest was solid, I scored a major hit! Not knowing what I would find, I sawed off the rusted out tips up to a 3/8" from the seam at the widest point of the bell. To my surprise, I found a very thick, recessed end baffle (that has a nice look) with the exhaust tube comming through all the way to the end of the original tip. I cut the tube off even with the new opening and recessed it about 1/2" back into the mouth and painted the whole interior of the opening with a high temp black paint. You wouldn't believe how sharp it looks! Clean and racey. So, before you trash your mufflers, chop'em! What could you lose?
  22. Yep, that angle is a real bugger bear. I can deal with that though. I know that when I raced with high performance engines, the right amount of exhaust back pressure was essenitial to prevent burned exhaust valves and holes in pistons. I just don't know if straight through pipes could cause that problem with the Ventures. Thanks for your response! C.W.
  23. My '85 has a left muffler that's rusted out on it's tip and rather than run down another, I'd like to install a set of 1200 H-D mufflers that are straight-through with surrounding baffles. I'm wondering if not enough back pressure could be an issue. Anyone done any homework on aftermarket exhaust?
