Turn Signal "Short" cut Solution?
igya replied to igya's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The flasher I used is the 550. So, are you saying one of these prongs is for an indicator light? Which one would that be? I might try a 2 prong just to be safe. Thanks man! And don't forget, "Smoke by day and light by night." Been there, done that. -
Turn Signal "Short" cut Solution?
igya replied to igya's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Man, you guys came through again! I failed to mention the fuse, but I always use them. I'm using 4 bulbs and a 550 flasher. I guess the prongs were wired wrong (hot vs. ground maybe). I'll try it again with all these great tips in mind. Thanks again guys (and gals?)! -
Hey folks, help me out here. You guys seem to be of a very savvy generation who might know how to revert back to the "good ol' days" with your technical know-how. I want to take a severe shortcut to set up turn signals on a very old Yammy that is devoid of any modern electrical components. I'd really like to put the required turn signals on it by simply going from the battery, through the handlebar switch, to the blinker can, and straight to the bulbs. Why wouldn't that work? I did it using motorcycle and auto 3-prong blinker cans and all I get is a buzz and too much heat in the heavy duty wires. However, the proper lights will shine when the turn signal switch is moved left or right, but no blink. Just the buzz and heat. What do you think gives here other than me being a complete idiot who does not deserve my sweet little '85 VR?

How Hot Is Too Hot?
igya replied to igya's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hey guys, thanks for the "cool" (sic) answers. That Fayette rally was my first serious ride on the '85 and I see why ya'll (I'm a grit eater) like these 1st gens so much. Talk about smooth power! As long as I keep my propping-up foot off pea gravel when I stop, these babies can't be beat. Three times, in as many months, I've had to petition every ounce of grunt I had left to pick this simi up off its side. The last time it only went down at about a 45 degree angle (thanks to one of my car fenders and hood, and turn signal, and etc)! Oh well, what a blast it was, though!! -
I went to the Fayetteville, AR rally this weekend and found my temp guage reading about 1/8" from the RED zone while at an idle. A little too close for comfort, in my openion. The outside temperature was about 82 degrees. I would like to see it stay about half way into the GREEN. Am I asking for too much?

Okay, I knocked the antenna around pretty good and noticed the FM cutting out a bit. So, I snached the antenna off and replaced with a $13 one from Auto Zone and almost all my problems went away. So much for the fancy $50 antenna. The contact are next. Thanks a lot friend!!

WOW! MAGNIFICENT+++!!! You are good at what you do! Can't thank you enough!!!

My OEM radio has too many issues. The AM/FM button works only when it wants to, FM skips like poor reception, and it won't pick up many stations that I know are strong. I'm pretty sure my antenna is okay, otherwise, AM wouldn't come in very well. More solder joint? Piece of junk? Ignorant operator? I don't know.

The USB hub is another great thought. If it's in the back, just run a short USB extension to an outside location. Thanks man! I guess I'll be awake all night now thinking about how to set this up. Oh well.

You're right man, I can't believe I let the aux. port slip my mind. Who cares if the CD skips? THANKS for the reminder Squid.

I've read the threads on sterios but not found an answer to my question. I don't have to tell you how bad the '85 Royale radio is (if you have one). I've decided to swap it out with a modern radio with a CD player. But, here's my question, are there any out there that will mount vertically without a lot of CD skip? I'm desperate for decent music!

I want to wire up my turn signals like the first bikes, w/o the extra electronic components on later bikes. Just the handlebar switch, flasher relay unit and bulbs. I tried that but every relay unit canister I plug in just buzzes and will not flash the bulbs. When the switch is moved left or right, the proper bulb shines but no blink. If any techno brains know why, I'd appreciate an answer. I realize that they blink when a certain amount of resistance is produced from the energy used to light the bulbs. But, is there a blinker unit that operates with a timer or by any other method other than resistance?

Actually, I haven't done anything to it. I bought it from a guy parting out an '87 VR because I didn't want to mess with my '85 1200 when 2nd gear went out. Well, now I've decided to sell my bike and get a newer one. I no longer need the engine. It's been out of a good running bike for only about 2 weeks now. It's good to go. Where do you live in Oklahoma? I go to Claremore now and then to visit. I used to live there.

Hey guys, don't sweat the small stuff. Besides, I enjoy reading all the notes on which is faster. Actually, It's really kind of funny just thinking about pulling up beside two VRs with both engines and turning on the burners of my Honda V65 Magna (which is loaded with touring stuff) and watch the telephone poles go by like a picket fence. Oops! I've done it again! This can will be FULL of angry worms!! Hey, just having fun too.

Yep. However, the only way a person could come out ahead is to pick it up because of the shipping cost. I could make a free delivery up to about 200 miles from Springfield, MO. But, I have $750 in it and really don't need to sell it bad enough to loose money on it. That's about the cost of all the 2nd gear parts, not to mention the unbelievable labor envolved.

I'm putting my '87 VR engine up for sale and would appreciate someone giving me the weight of these engines w/o carbs.

help my 1983 venture has a cracked frame

Oh man, I LOVE this '85 and you don't how much I'm relieved to hear about the frame improvments. Now I can start sleeping in my bed again rather than on the garage floor with a flashlight in my hand. Watching for frame cracks to develop is a lot like watching paint dry. THANKS GUYS!!! -

How 'bout it Randy, I here tell that you have the scoop on cracked frames. Was that still a problem after '83? -

I hope you're right about '83 frames. I have an extra 1300cc engine and solder is cheap. The frame issue is what made my sholders drop. Mine is an '85, but I'd sure like to know what changes were made to beef up the frame. -

I guess my two '74s (34 yrs. old), '77 & '83 Yammies have spoiled me. No issues at all. Solid machines and never a worry. Oh well, not trying to start an argument, just a little disappointed that no more testing was done on a machine that I enjoy so much. And yes, I'm keeping it until the wheels rot off. -

I don't know about you, but to me, the beloved VR seems to be a member of a family with an awful lot of issues to deal with. 2nd gears, cracked frames, bad solder connections. wow, I don't know if I made the right choice or not. I would appreciate a little encouragement here. I'm getting a little nervous. -
Oh Sweet Mama!!! I punched four 5/16" holes in each muffler around the center outlet tube and it makes such a sweet sound that I can't get enough of it!
-
Condor, you're absolutely right. It's a real shame that Yamaha Inc. allowed it to go on so long with that obvious problem. SHAME ON THEM!!

In comes the Grim Reaper! Yours is a classic Venture disease. Rather than repair my 2nd gear, I just bought a 1300cc engine on eBay cheaper than repairing the old 1200. Just make dog-gone sure the last 4 digits of the serial number (on one you buy) is higher than 1413. 1414 and higher is when they started producing the improved transmission. Sorry, you're not alone!
