  1. Hello All, I got the tags for my '87 that I have spent about a year off and on redoing. I never rode it, bought it as a project. I think I have the carbs pretty good, but there is one thing that I noticed, and don't know if this is a characteristic of the Venture or if I need so further adjustment. When I was riding, when I would pull the clutch and wind off to shift, the RPM's would hang up hi for a little while and not drop right down to shift. Is the throttle response slow on wind off, or do I need to look at something? Thanks D
  2. Well it's taken me a while, but I finally figures out how to get this digital camera to take reasonable pictures and resize them so I could post them on here. The first two are what it looked like while sitting in Harvey Rounce's (VR member rounce) garage before I bought it from him. The next three are of it in my storage shelter waiting for spring to get warm enough to start riding again. I still have a little more to add but its getting to be less noticable items. By the way the shelter is made by ShelterLogic in Watertown, CT. A wind about 40 - 45 mph caused the damage you see and more. The end wall is held on with light bungee cords and soft of flaps in the wind until tears out the eyelets or rips the bungee. The structure is set up where trees give it some protection from wind. They put a clause in the warranty stating they can't control the wind and thus wind damage is not covered.
  3. OK, Im usually prepared when I go riding. Here in Colorado between Late Sept. and May ya never know what type of weather you are going to run into. Yesterday every bike in Colorado was out being that it was 70 degrees! Pretty awesome considering it was March 1st. Me and the Mrs. are gonna get some miles but she is fiddle fartin around , taking forever to get ready http://www.mygreatrides.com/images/emoticons/rolleyes.gif . So I rush her out the door and we actually discussed if we should pack some extra gear. By now Im chompin at the bit...LETS JUST GET GOING!!!! Soooo..we have on t-shirts and hoodies jeans and chaps and the obligatory fingerless gloves and do rags. We decide that we are gonna make a run to Larimie Wyoming. Cool I say -Lets roll. Riding thru Ft. Collins was great...hit highway 14 toward Poudre Canyon, still rompin and a stompin. Open country almost no traffic. AWESOME. On 287 nearing Virginiadale the wind starts to pick up and within minutes we are actually fighting to keep the bike on the road. This wind is getting colder. And colder. We decide to ride it out hoping to catch a break and the wind will die out. Bad idea http://www.mygreatrides.com/images/emoticons/doubt.gif . Now we are like 50 miles out and the wind is absolutely ripping and bring more cold air as it blows across the snow covered mountains just a few miles to our west. I cant feel the left sided of my face, my hands are freezing and sore from the wind and the death grip I have on the handlebars keeping the bike upright. And now we are both shivering. This really isnt any fun. So after what seems like an eternity we FINALLY roll into Larime and pull into the first gas station we see to try to hide from the weather for a bit. When we stopped the bike we could hear the wind...it sounded like a freight train overhead. We did catch a bit of a break.....the gas station had stocking hats and gloves for sale. SO we decide to gas up and make a run for I-80 toward Cheyenne since the wind is blowing west to east it would be at our backs. So we put on our new "gear" and I pull my facemask out of my bags and we head for I-80. But still we only have the shirts and hoodies on. On I-80 we find that the wind still hates us http://www.mygreatrides.com/images/emoticons/evil.gif . For some reason it is now blowing south to north. Its not long before we are both shivering again. But now there is even a better surprise waiting for us. About 20 miles outsdie of Larime the wind had blown the snow and melting snow across the road. Ever see ice and snow coming up in the road...you are doing 70 mph and there are 18 wheelers all around ya. http://www.mygreatrides.com/images/emoticons/shock.gif . Anyway about 15 miles west of Cheyenne we finally get the wind blowing at our backs and the air starts to warm up.SO we hit I-25 headed back to Ft. Collins and just open 'er up. Running at about 90mph. I just wanna go home. Leason re learned.
  4. Well we did it again,we went for a ride today,Debbys first since October(Surgery),Found a great place for a Meet ,BBQ and swim sometime. It was a HOT day,93 degrees but the wind was blowing and made it a little cool feeling. Here is a few pictures of the place. Tom

  6. Ok, I got it installed following Squidley`s instructions, but the Antenna seams to catch alot of wind, any one else have this problem??
  7. Greetings all. Public holiday Monday here in my state. Wife says to me yesterday, "Do you want to do a run to Orange tomorrow (125kms away) and do breakfast so I can check out some tiles?" (We're renovating, but who cares? Any excuse for a ride). Didn't have to ask me twice. Up at 6.30 and on the road by 7. Bee-u-tee-ful day. No traffic to speak of that time of the day and the temperature is around 15degC. We got to Orange around 8.20 (couple of stops on the way) and noticed a breeze starting to stir. Did the tile looking thing in the big hardware store (and bought myself some big-boys' toys in the tool shop) and walked back out to the bike. "Sheesh", says the boss. "That wind's picked up quite a bit". So we head off back home. The further we go the more windy it gets. By the time we got home after an hour of non-stop riding I was nackered. By my estimation we had an 80km/hr (50 mph) crosswind ALL THE WAY. Not funny, I can tell you. Every time we came out of a cutting we were blown sideways towards the on-coming traffic lane. I think I've worn the left sides of the tyres away from keeping the bike on a constant lean into the wind. You watch, as soon as the sun goes down the wind will disappear. Hate that. Oh well, back to work tomorrow. Probably ride. Can't be any worse that today was.
  8. I would like some advice from someone who has cut down his windshield and was happy with the result. I would like to know; * What kind of saw did you use? I assume a hand held electric jig saw. * What type of blade is best? * How did you mark the line? Tape? * Did you have to do finish work on the new edge and what did you use? My wind screen is a lot higher now that I have new Progressive fork springs, so I need to take about 4 inches off. Thanks
  9. Well, I broke down and bought a 1st Gen 1984 Venture this summer. My previous bike was a BMW R1100RT-P. Here are my experiences with the new ride as compared to the old one. When I rode the bike home I noticed quite a bit of pulling to one side or the other. It was very influence by grooves or creases/cracks in the pavement, enough to be quite scary. I checked the air in the tires and found them to be low, so I filled the to the spec'ed amount. Now the bike will is still affected by grooves but not nearly as bad. to hard pull to either side, though once in a while the bike wants to "sway" from side to side while driving on the highway. Feels kinda like you have a rear passenger leaning from one side to the other. Compared to the BMW the ride is a lot "looser?" much softer and less precise. One advantage to the Venture... I can ride on dirt roads now. It was terrifying on the BMW as the bike constantly felt like it wanted to fall over. Brake.... ok on the venture. Far superior on the BMW. I miss ABS. and the funky front suspension on the Beemer totally eliminated nose dive during heavy braking. Power... here it's a toss up. The Venture feels more powerful with a more pleasing exhaust tone. The BMW WAS faster, just didn't feel like it was. especially at 75MPH.. The venture will get there, but the BMW would get there quickly and was more than happy to keep going from there. The venture's throttle doesn't seem as responsive above 65 as the RT's does. Comfort... One word... heated hand grips... the RT has 'em, the Venture doesn't. The venture seat is far more comfortable than the RT's. I put a Sargent seat on the RT and It was acceptable, but still not as good. I love the backrest on the Venture, and the handlebars are at a more comfortable position. I still want to pull them back a bit farther, but I don't get the pain between my shoulderblades that I would after a long ride on the RT. Wind Protection... The venture has very good wind protection. I seem to get more wind hitting me in the back than on the RT, but that's the only place I get hit. On the RT even with the windshield fully upright I would get some buffeting on the top of my helmet. I do miss the electric adjustable windshield on the RT as on a hot day, I don't get enough wind on my helmet to keep my head cool and have to ride with my visor up. Wind protection on the rest of my body is about the same. Gadgetry and places to put stuff. The venture has a lot more storage. The BMW had more power outlets. I have not james bonded the venture out yet. The BMW had Satellite radio, radar detector and Ipod mount on a shelf above the gauges. Have not seen a good way to build a shelf on the venture. The BMW also had a table PC running Copilot Live Laptop GPS software on a ram mount attached between the handlebars. I could probably come up with a mounting solution on the Venture but It will require some fabrication. I do not have a stereo on the venture yet and am still trying to decide how to set it up. I know I want AM/FM, Ipod, GPS Audio and CB (selectable through the bike speakers or through a headset) and I want Intercom with the passenger with the passenger being able to listen to her own ipod instead of what I'm listening to. I havent found a system that can do this, so I'll have to design my own. The BMW also generated more electricity to power all of the goodies. Looks... The BMW was ugly, but in a good way. The venture looks good but really dated. I think getting rid of the two tone paint and updating the headlight would work wonders here. Maintenance... The BMW needed regular oil changes... that's it. noting else needed. The Venture ran well when I got it, The I ran a carb cleaner through it. It started leaking fuel down the rear shock at idle. I pulled of the aircleaner and cleaned the carbs, fixed the leak but then I got a lot of backfires and carb "popping". Then the leak came back. I pulled off the airbox and cleaned carbs again, I noticed that I didn't have the two rubber hoses connected. (also noticed the RPMs would drop when I sprayed Carb cleaner in the left carbs but wouldn't when I sprayed the right side... not sure what that's about) Got everything reconnected and the bike runs great. Passenger... Wife is much more comfortable on the Venture. I miss her hugging on me now that she has a back rest, but at least we don't bang helmets when I change gears now. When coming to a stop or "walking the bike", the passenger footpegs are positioned such that I am always hitting her feet with my calves.. wasn't a problem on the BMW. All in all, I am very happy with the Venture especially given the price difference between it and the RT. I may still buy a second bike for commuting to work and save the big tourer for rides with the wife. Maybe a single seat BMW R1200C.
  10. My wife complains that it is hard for her to hold her head up against the wind. I have the stock hight windsheild and still have the stock clear lower wind screens on. I let my dad and mom ride the bike (they ride a HD with no windsheild) and my mom complained about the same thing. I wanted to cut my windsheild down but I am having second thoughts now. Does anyone know what causes this and what, if anything, I can do about it?
  11. I have a 2000 Royal Star Venture Millenium model. I bought some basic J+M headset units advertised as fitting the bike's factory audio sytem but the mic's are always "on" so I get an awful lot of wind noise transmitting into our ear pieces via the microphones. I even hear my own voice in my earpieces when I talk to the passenger. The "push to talk" does not seem to work either (or is that just for the CB?). DO you guys get this happening with the original factory units? J+M sells another attachment for about $150 each to get ride of the noise (basically an extra "push to talk" it seems). Ugh, they seem to drain you of $$$ Also I bought a spare Yamaha (aka J+M) unit on eBay but the microphone does not seem to work. The part is dated 2004 and part number is STR-4XY89-30-KT so I wonder if it's just a year compatability issue or if it's broken. The wind noise thing is my real issue tho' Please advise... Thanks, PKslice
  12. Anyone have the clear or tinted they are looking to unload?
  13. Does anyone have information on good looking & functional upper wind deflectors for a 06 RSTD? I am trying to block the cold wind off of my knees.
