  1. So, I'm ready to instal my new progressive springs and I'm looking for opinions/facts about which type of fork oil should I use and why. Should I use regular fork oil, a synthetic blend, or a full synthetic? Advantages/disadvantages of each?
  2. I was wondering if it's ok to use a synthetic automotive oil in the rear end gearbox? prepping for winter storage, I want to get as much service done now as possible because I know I wont have the willpower to do it in the spring when it get's warm enough to ride. Can I use a syncromesh synthetic or a typical 90W synthetic gearbox oil back there?
  3. I've been through the forum looking for info on oil for the 2nd Gen Ventures. I recently did an oil change and used Yama Lube and a Yamaha filter no probs. I've not seen much information of people using Synthetic oils in the bikes like you would on other bikes. (05 VStar has been running nicely on AMSOIL, smoother, quieter and cooler). In regards to the 'whine' of the engine, would synthetic oils quell this down a tad more? Or are synthetics not recommended on these bikes for a certain reason or another? CHeers
  4. For those of you who use a synthetic oil, when did you change over?
  5. has anyone ever used or heard of anyone using additives or synthetic oils to stop the "chirp or whine"
  6. Hello all, I couldn't find any specific info on this question, so I'll try a post. I've just purchased a '99 RSV, the manual says I should be using 20W-40 oil. I'm going to switch to synthetic but I've not been able to find 20W-40 (it also seems scarce in non-synth). I noticed on one of the threads that someone was using Mobil 1 15W-50. So, my question is, what type and weight of synthetic do you use? Lots of interesting stuff here, thanks to all you xspurts for the info. Doug

    Oil

Could someone help please? I am looking for a place in the Apache Junction area (Phoenix) Arizona that sells synthetic Mobil 1 Motorcycle oil. Would greatly appreciate any help you can give. Thanks
  8. I'm over do for an oil change. Our ATV's are single cylinder liquid cooled Yamaha 400 and 450 engines. These are the 4x4 Kodiak models and used mostly for hunting rugged terrain and slow manuevers. Our average speed might be 5 to 10 mph tops. We are over do for our first oil change. The service manual says first one do at 200 miles or 20 hours. Our atv's have about 350 miles each on them. I noticed the service manual says change oil at 200,750,1500, and every 1500 after that. Do I need to wait a while before switching to synthetic? It's not like we can break the motor in with 10K first. We average about 125 miles a year. My thoughts are extreme temperature variations. 0 degrees playing in snow in the winter to 100 in summer. Slow speed depends mostly on the liquid cooling with less air flow.I have noticed the electric fans kick on often. I'm going to be using Rotella oil with super tech oil filters. Just wondering if I should wait a while before upgrading to synthetic?
  9. I have am 06 RSV and a friend of mine just bought a new 07 RSV from a dealer in Stillwater Ok. I bought my bike from a dealer in Broken Arrow, Ok. and they told me Synthetic oil was just fine to use after the first 4000 miles. The dealer in Stillwater told my friend they don't recommend Synthetic oil at all in RSV. I have always used Amsoil motorcycle 10W40 in my bikes and have never had anything but good results. Does anyone no of a reason why we should not use Synthetic oil in our RSV? Thanks for your help, Dandy1
  10. Hello All, I have a 07 midnight venture and am ready for my 3rd service and I am considering going to Amsoil. People around home have been saying good things 'bout Amsoil and I am wondering what you all think of synthetic oils in your rides, especially Amsoil??? Another concern is Yamaha's warranty with using Amsoil. My dealer just told me that Yamaha is coming out with a total synthetic oil within the month or so. Any input would be appreciated, especially from you all that have been using the synthetics. Thanks, Sarge414 "Ride Always and Always Ride Safe!!!!"
  11. I have read the threads on synthetic oils and will be switching to full synthetic on my next oil change. I feel that the yamaha filters are overpriced, but am not sure which filter to use. I know this had been discussed but am unable to come up with the thread. So......which filter do you feel is best. Thanks in advance.
  12. My 97 TC at 55K miles, has developed an annoyance! Under hard acceleration in 5th the clutch slips. Different oil types, full synthetic, half synthetic and dino don't make any difference. I understand there is a clutch spring replacement kit available that corrects yamma momma's design deficiency in this area. Does anyone have experience with this? Also, whats the general concensus concerning the type of clutch plates to get to replace what's there. This looks to be a winter project to keep my beast happily on the road. Thanks :confused24:
