  1. So a couple of things. Yes there is a fuel filter, actually there are two. Primary one is beside the battery behind the left side cover near the fuel pump area, it is a real pain in the butt to get to and get out, it is mounted with a rubber strap that is secured to a metal bracket. The secondary fuel filter is part of the petcock, if you pull the petcock out of the bottom of the tank you will find it has small cone shaped screens on the inlets. Any or all of them could be plugged. Yes fuel pumps on these bikes go bad and there has been a pretty sizable number of folks that have had issues with them. If this happens again, very carefully remove the gas cap and listen for a sucking or whooshing type noise, that would indicate that the tank vent is plugged, some have had issues with critters crawling up the vent tube and making a nest or getting stuck and die , this will restrict the air getting back into the tank to replace the gas volume removed as the bike is ridden, causes a vacuum and the bike dies of fuel starvation. Easiest way to check for this is to pull the vent line off the pipe on the tank and blow some compressed air through it, then check to see if anything came out. Hope this helps.
  2. Oh my, she is going to love that.
  3. Correct. The 4 into 2 systems can be installed on bikes that came from the factory with 4 x 4 pipes, but you would need to buy or make support brackets for the mufflers. On the factory models that had 4 x 2 set ups the muffler cans hang on underside of the saddle bag stays. The mounting brackets for the Venture (99 to 2013) and Tour Deluxe (05 to 2010) are the same, but are different that the 4 x 2 found on original Royal Stars made from 1996 to 2001. I have been told that any year model 4 x 2 will fit on original Royals like your 96 , but I have never tried to fit a newer set to an older style bike. Keep looking I am sure there is a set of factory 4 x 4 pipes somewhere; if not a set of saddlebags, stays and 4 x 2 mufflers from any of the models sporting that set up could be another solution. If you have to pull the header pipes, do be careful, those nuts have been on for a long time and subject to many heat / cool cycles as well as rain and other moisture, they are sure to be well corroded, so apply some good rust penetrating oil before wrenching on them.
  4. Yeah Bob, been about half heartedly following this thread and the original over on the DELPHI forum, pretty sure the last report from DELPHI was that he bypassed the side stand switch and was able ride with out incident, but there are two very similar threads running on this type of issue on the DELPHI forums, so I may be confused, happens way to often now that I am getting up in age.
  5. Diode assembly is #19 http://www.partsfish.com/oemparts/a/yam/50045f98f8700209bc794e98/electrical-1
  6. So my question is, why they are not listing demo rides during Biketoberfest in Daytona? Normally they set up demo rides at the speedway and the last few years also set up at the AIM show in Orlando at the convention center on the same weekend. Both are large events and draw huge crowds, what is up with that?
  7. Do your blinkers also work as tail lights? Many of the after market LED turns are set up with red and amber LEDs so they can be running lights and turn signals. If this is the case they may have tapped into the tail light circuit there in the tail light housing.
  8. Sure I will take and we can use it for a pay it forward deal next time some one wants or needs one, provided I can in fact fix it. Let me know when you have the replacement and I will pm you my mailing address.
  9. Just about any local electronics repair shop could probably do it, but they usually have a minimum charge and it will probably be more that a new light set up. Worth a few phone calls. If you get a new set up and want to have a spare, I will be happy to look at the bad one and see if I can repair it, but likely will take a few weeks to turn it around, I am sure I do not have the parts in stock, so would need to research them and order them.
  10. Try here also, https://www.radiantz.com/V-Star-Road-Star-Retro-p/9011-10.htm On mine it came with a plug on a pig tail that plugged in where the OEM bulb plugged in. looks like maybe the previous owner got creative with yours.
  11. I want to speak with the first owner of a 3rd Gen as soon as possible. They should be taking delivery on the pre-order ones soon, I was in the local dealer two weeks ago and they had one pre-order sold and said the delivery was schedule next month (September) so it should not be long now.
  12. Try looking at this picture from Parts Fish, find item 19. http://www.partsfish.com/oemparts/a/yam/500459c2f8700209bc793b63/electrical-1 Cheap enough to buy the assembly and then you have something to look at and compare as you hunt for it.
  13. Pictures would help us understand what parts broke. If it is the plastic where the latches attach, maybe reattaching broken sections with ABS glue. I think it is DEVCON that makes a product called plastic weld, I have used it in the past with good results. One thing is that it sets quickly so be ready to work quickly and surely.
  14. Is there enough thread sticking out so you could get two nuts on the threaded end? If that is possible you could jam the two nuts together and then using a wrench on the jammed nuts maybe get the bolt to rotate just a bit in the keeper to break it loose. I agree it looks like maybe some weld splatter got on the bolt head fixing it to the keeper. I suppose the shock will not slide off the bolt?
  15. I am not sure what the cause would be, but I am concerned that the charging voltage is to low. The service manual states that at 5000 RPM the charging voltage should be 14 VDC, you are showing less that 12. That would indicate maybe a bad regulator. I am also concerned that there is an imbalance between the output of the three phases on the stator, I could not find anything published from Yamaha as to what the unregulated AC output voltage from the stator should be other than greater than 100 VAC, when I had RR problems on my 07 I seem to recall being told that AC output should be about 115 VAC, you are showing; Volts AC at 4000 rpm (with RPM meter) 1 to 2 - 115 1 to 3 - 150 2 to 3 - 112 You have a 30 volt plus imbalance, that is 25%. I am not sure what in the stator would cause that but I am pretty certain it is not a good thing. Some of the stator repair/replace places on line, like RM Stator (https://www.rmstator.com/en_ww/) have a help line you can contact maybe they can help if you give them your findings. My bet is that the imbalance in the AC output voltage from the stator has damaged the regulator/rectifier causing the low DC charging voltage.
  16. I had one dig a hole under the slab of the house, I tried everything to persuade it to leave, red pepper, commercial critter abatement potions, moth balls, big rocks and a few other things that I have forgotten, the only thing that worked was when I took the ashtray out of a friend's car and dumped the ashes and cigarette buts down the hole, the critter never came back. Filled in the hole and drove about 6 lengths of rebar down in front of where the hole was and buried chicken wire in the dirt in front of the rebar. The bugger never came back.
  17. They dig holes under your house and are very hard to get rid of, they typically will not go into a metal trap, they do not see well so they keep their snout in the dirt as they look for food, as soon as they bump into the metal on a trap they go the other way. They also jump straight up when startled, that is what they do when a car passes over them. If they did not jump up most cars would pass over them and never touch them. I do not want to hit one on the bike would be like hitting a large rock.
  18. That sounds like a good plan for Joe, I found two variations at CORSA TECH, Bongobob needed them in a rush, so I gave him the info and he ordered direct and will build his own harness. CORSA has a good selection, I just like Joe better.
  19. Good deal, welcome to Florida, be sure to look up Barracuda when you get settled, he is in the B'Ville area. Maybe we will have a chance to meey and ride together one day.
  20. Yes I know and his website is down so I cannot even browse for the part. Having trouble finding decent alternate source without going to Japan or the UK. Del City has some as well as Corsa Tech, but Joe is much easier to deal with and more helpful.
  21. Duron and Flyingfool, I have thought about doing that, using a different connector, but as it is for another owner, I wanted him to weigh in on that decision as he would have to make up the stator end and then would have a non standard bike side harness and should he ever need to replace the stator while on the road or away from home, he could not simply buy a stock stator and swap it out due to the potential mis-match of the connectors. I am sure it is not anything special, I just want to at least try to find him the stock replacement if I can. Thanks for the help.
  22. Thanks but I need an end view of the mating part(s) so I can identify the connector on the various seller's websites.
