  1. When I got back to Ft Riley from Iraq, my first free weekend I came home to get my Venture to have up there with me. Being the Army, I had to be counseled about my high risk behaviour of riding a motorcycle that far. The guy who talked to me was real proud of his "toy hauler" that he used to haul his bike when he goes on trips. I think I offended him when I asked him how that counted as riding a bike.
  2. I have used GPS systems for a long time now. I used to be able to get by with the smaller units that you can slip in a pocket also. But if you are getting up close to the age where you will need reading glasses, start looking for a larger screen. I can glance at my IWay 500 and get the info I need at a glance. When I look at my Garmin Etrex Legend though, it takes me a bit to find the glasses, get it close up and squint real hard to get the info. And of course my wife's screaming about watching the road always distracts me and I have to start all over again.
  3. I have travelled to Germany (even East Germany years ago), France, Belgium, Lichtenstein, Switzerland, Netherlands, England, Ireland, Kuwait, and Iraq without showing a passport. Heck going into that last one they even made sure I had a weapon AND ammo on the plane.
  4. I would imagine that any unit that uses a replaceable memory card will not be waterproof. I did another check on the IWay 500C, the site says it is waterproof and conforms to IPX 7 standards (IPX-7 - water-proof, immersion resistant for 30 minutes under 1 meter (3 feet) of water.) I do know that I have been in some heavy downpours with my 500C without a problem.
  5. We simply must control our borders, especially against those crafty Canadians. I have heard that they have a plot to enslave innocent US citizens through addiction to that awful drug - Canadian beer. All of us need to be vigilant and do our very best to destroy all stocks of this "beer" before it can further harm our peaceful society:stirthepot:
  6. It's mind over matter. If you don't mind, it don't matter:)
  7. I used to have a CB all the time back in the 70s. Anymore I won't use them unless absolutely necessary because of all the jerks that run linears and think they are DJs to the point that regular people can't hold a conversation. For the life of me I never understood why someone would think that everyone in a 15+ mile radius would want to hear them sing, or rebroadcast some song that is playing on their radio. But then again, that is just my 2 cents.
  8. Happy thanksgiving to you as well. As for me, I don't plan on eating as much as I did last year. The guys serving at DFAC #2 in Taji didn't understand the words "just a little"
  9. I won't have an address for either of my two that are going over until after Christmas. Meant to get that info to you before, sorry about that.
  10. Are you bored again? We need to get you a hobby:cool10:
  11. Yeah, even the Iraqi officers I worked with in my little vacation trip called me "Haji" (used for old man). For US troops that use those kind of comments I just reply that I regret not having knocked off their grandpa before he had a chance to father any children.
  12. I just did a google search and found this site which apparently sells used plates: http://www.licenseplatesusa.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=11. I noticed that the Mississippi and New York plates both have an image, in the Mississippi plate it is placed behind the numbers, the New York place has it to the side.
  13. Is that really Russell there in that avatar pic? I thought it was Gandalf from the Lord of the Rings movies.
  14. My wife and I both wear Justin basic ropers. It has a walking heel and is very comfortable. I am also cheap, so coming in at 50-60 dollars is good to.
  15. Obviously this will lean very hard toward the liquid silver 2nd gen since they are the best looking:stirthepot: But just a suggestion, how about letting any who are interested submit a photo for this so you have more than just pictures of bikes on stands? I will volunteer to help out as needed if you want to go that route.
  16. I know what you mean. I have two sons about to go over, one is going to the base I was at last year. Kind of wish I was going back over too. Stay safe, let me know if you need anything.
  17. Yep, the cards were excellent and came in very handy.
  18. Didn't I just miss you over there last year (only you were wearing the other suit)?
  19. Decent letter writing paper is difficult to come by over there as well. Good thinking. But no stamps: postage is free on letters coming back from that area.
  20. We heard some pesky Canadians was gonna steal it, so we moved it south for safekeeping:stirthepot:
  21. I know what you did last Christmas. I am in. Let me know what assistance you need and it is yours.
  22. Two of my sons will be over there sometime just before or after Christmas. And again, thanks to all that supported Clay, Elizabeth, and me while we were overseas. You are all special.
  23. Tipping is a very dependent on culture. While I was stationed in Germany, everything was figured into the price, and menus were required to be posted outside the restaurant. That made it easy enough that even I could figure out what my bill was going to be. Although even though the gratuity was included, most of us left some pocket change for "drink money". Here in the US we do it different. Doesn't mean we are right or wrong. But it definately means that we need to check our conscience when we are figuring out the tip. I have had some very good mentors over the years who have pounded into my pointy head that I should try to look at things through the eyes of the person I am interacting with. In other words, put yourself in the waiter's shoes and tip accordingly. But there ain't enough money in the world to adequately tip the folks on this forum that are always out front helping everybody else.
  24. There will be a motorcycle ride to support the troops at Fort Benning, Georgia on the 17th of November. Lots of other things happening there at the same time. More info is here: http://www.godblessfortbenning.com/schedule.php
  25. I can still fit mine, and in a couple of weeks I will wear it to a third basic training graduation for one of my sons. Then a couple of months later, I hope to be wearing it at his graduation from OCS.
